OK, I've had enough. I'm taking a vacation from the NFL for this year. There is plenty of good College ball on and plenty of other sports. I really don't need to see a bunch of overpaid dolts who have jumped on the latest media-fueled bandwagon trying to show me how "courageous" they are for a full minute before every game. Life is too short.

Perhaps vacation is just what you need sir. For me life is too short to let an athlete's pregame choices force me to not enjoy the greatest sport on earth.

I'm doing the same for slightly different reasons. I could care less about Colin and other players "making a difference". Give them a few years and they will enter the ranks of broke former players. Since the civil rights movement, their community has received additional funds and privileges to help eradicate the wrongs of the past. How has that worked out??? Now they think more of the same will somehow change things? It's not too difficult to see that two generations from now, they will be in a bigger cesspool than they are now. But I digress…

I am tuning out due to the NFL having double standards on whom they let express their opinions and whom they don't. Also tuning out because the network wastes an unbelievable amount of time following around a backup QB with the camera.

athletes forget that their fans watch games TO GET AWAY from societal problems---it is a big turnoff to see athletes--especially highly paid ones--take focus away from the game. Not saying they dont have a right to do so, just saying that it is not what their customers came/paid to see.

I too refuse to watch NFL games this year. I guess I am a patriot and don't respect players who are unwilling to honor their fans.

I don't understand why athletes think their opinions are so GD important. Your job is to throw a ball for a living. No one gives a crap what you think about societies injustices. Do your job and keep your political opinions to yourself, and if these issues are important to you, how about doing something about it in the community? instead of disrespecting the flag and the people that have given their lives so that you can make millions playing a silly game.

Do you think CK thinks his opinion is more important than anyone else's? He is exercising his right to express it, as you are right now. What's so important about yours that we need to hear it?

No one gives a crap what you think about societies injustices

Clearly someone does, because the media is covering it; and clearly you do, because you're talking about it right now.

Do your job and keep your political opinions to yourself

I wasn't aware that the occupation "football player" came with a line in the job description which says, "keep political opinions to yourself".

I'd love to see someone actually articulate how it is "disrespectful" to the flag or to fallen military to kneel during the anthem.

Seems like your beef should be with the media for non-stop coverage rather than a fellow citizen exercising their right to express themselves. I find it annoying (the constant coverage, that is) as well, but I see no reason to attack players for taking a political stance. They are privileged to have the stage on which to work for societal change, and one could argue that to waste the opportunity would be more "disrespectful" to the country's ethos than their choice of stance while a song plays over the loudspeakers.

Clearly the liberal media, which includes ESPN, is eating this up as Kap further pushes their agenda to disparage LEOs in this country. I have no problem with Kap expressing his opinions (and hopefully he actually steps up and helps his community) on his own time. However, he is taking an anti American political stance at his workplace which I think we can all agree is very unprofessional. Excuse me for the way I came off earlier, I do believe in CK's right to free speech, but when Jim Brown and Muhammad Ali spoke out they did it off the field and outside the ring, on their own time. CK and others should follow their lead.

I'd rather see players kneeling rather sitting on their overpaid, privileged ass.
To me, their kneeling seems a form of reverence towards our flag.

How do you know who is going to be a broke former player? Please tell me how you can look at a TV screen and tell who is going to be broke in a few years. Maybe we can apply this special ability of yours to curing cancer or heart disease. Please contact the NIH and share this fantastic gift of yours.

Privileges to make up for the past? Exactly what privileges are we talking here? The privilege of being profiled by cops? The privilege of being shot in the back? The privilege of the death penalty being handed out unfairly? Or maybe just the privilege of being looked down upon by people like you?

You're right...who brought up that silly idea of civil rights...where all people deserve to be treated the same, regardless of their race, color, religion, sex, or national origin. Yeah, why don't we just go back to having separate bathrooms, schools, and don't forget about lynchings. Gotta bring those back too. Yup, such a healthy time in our country's history prior to civil rights.

I don't agree with how CK is going about this either, and I think he should be going after those people directly that are causing racial unrest, because I don't believe this is endemic of every police department in the country, but posting something very divisive like like you did, doesn't help much.

To me, the flag not only represents people that fought and died for our country, but it also represents those that fought and died to abolish slavery. I would hope.he would be cognizant of that as well.

I have just stopped watching because most of the time it is just bad football. With a flag on every play and announcers that like to hear themselves talk.
The main reason is most of the time it is just bad football. There are tons of terrible teams in the NFL and most games are just hard to watch for me.

i checked out of the 24/7 nfl coverage long before kap came along. its was just overload. i still casually follow along. to be honest, when my canada and i were dating, she was unimpressed with my lazy ass mostly stationed in front of a tv every weekend, so i compromised and mostly just watch Nebraska games.

not a fan at all of sitting during the anthem, but don't have a problem with the other protests - kneeling, locking arms, etc. i still don't know that it will have the impact they think it will.

How about the NCAA as well? Pulling stuff out of North Carolina. Just as bad.

The media seems to believe what an actor, singer or ball player says is earth shattering and their opinions mean much more than yours and mine.

Better give up movies, TV and music too. What about when a coach uses his stature in the state to promote anti-gay legislation? Is that ok because you agree with agenda?

I don't care what athletes, entertainers or coaches say about political issues anymore than I care about Joe Blow thinks about those topics. But if every time someone said or did something I disagreed with, I took the stance to not support, watch or frequent their facility, I would be in solitary confinement. Ha ha

Lot's of 'necks in this thread. How you spend your time is none of my f'n business. The fact that you have to bring it up for discussion (again) is drawing more attention to the issue. Pretty sure that is one of the goals of this behavior...

People are blasting football players for using the pedestal they've earned/been given to attempt in their own way to draw attention to a cause they see as being bigger or more important than themselves or their NFL career. I'm going out on a limb here but I'm going to guess that the people that are worked up over this would not have a problem if it were for a cause they supported.

The level of ignorance I've witnessed white people display when referring to a community and plight they know very little about is sad.

Coward...you got the guts to tell black people about their ignorance?

You call them ignorant, but you’re just as ignorant as it has been scientifically proven by a black Harvard professor, that his cause is BS.

Bring facts and not your hyperbolic opinion.

Love how white Social Justice Warriors are brave in condemning conservative whites. But don't actually care enough to tell black people the truth, that would help them better their situations.

It's just to make themselves feel better...they don't care either.

I realize that I'm putting myself on the firing line here, and so be it. I would not ever NOT stand during the anthem. HOWEVER, one of our greatest freedoms IS expression. I also have the right to strongly disagree with your stand. I would hate to give up a critical right because we have opposing points of view.

I WILL say that I came from a family that has extensive dealings /relationships with people of color, and have a sense in a small slice of some frustrations that sometimes simmer over race. I REALIZE the street runs both ways.

I have friends that have gotten stopped while driving just because of their skin color. They always complied with the officers, so no beatings or shootings or anything like that. It's not right. I don't know how to fix it. But, I know that police have beat up white people too.

IIRC, we have black president. America is still the land of opportunity, especially for minorities.

Make people equal. They find out that you still have to work hard, they don't like it, welcome to equality.

What Kaepernick is doing is disrespectful and divisive. He chose a negative context to frame his protest. Two wrongs don't make a right. If he is so concerned, he could have chosen a proactive, positive path.

I have no problem with them using their status to protest whatever injustice, perceived or real, that they want; just don't do it during the national anthem. I also have to say, protesting supposed "oppression" of black people, rings a little hollow coming from a guy that gets paid millions of dollars to stand on the sideline; in a league that is nearly 70% black where rookies get paid a minimum of $450,000 a year (in 2016, that amount goes up by $15,000 every year), an amount that a large portion of people, white or black or any other race, can only hope to earn in 10 years, let alone one year. All this in a country with a black president.

As for the idea of "drawing more attention" to the cause, what exactly about that particular cause needs attention drawn to? You can't read any website or even social network without seeing all kinds of stories regarding that cause. As for his particular method of drawing attention to his cause? I can't speak for anyone else, but when I first read about his "protest" and continue reading about his and other people's "protests", it doesn't make me think more about what he is protesting. I didn't sit down, and suddenly say "you know, this guy makes a good point". When your method of protesting is to disrespect your country by using the singing of the national anthem as your time to protest, I don't care what your cause is, I'm not paying attention period. If you can't have the common decency to respect others by not using that time to stage some protest, why should I care what your cause is?

I'm going out on a limb here but I'm going to guess that the people that are worked up over this would not have a problem if it were for a cause they supported.
I basically already said it above, but I'll state it again. I can't speak for anyone else, but I don't care if your cause is one near and dear to my heart, or one I don't really think about much; if your method of "protest" is to use the singing of the national anthem to draw attention to yourself and your supposed "cause", I'm going to tune you out.

The level of ignorance I've witnessed white people display when referring to a community and plight they know very little about is sad.
I always love comments like this. Yes, you are clearly a much better person than me because you "care" about the cause.

Coward? I'm talking about the majority of White America's ignorance to the entire situation. We think we have all the answers to their simple problems, but most of us have NO CLUE what it's like to be in their shoes.

My time spent in the neighborhood's on Chicago's southside working with the young men who people like you think you understand tells me everything I need to know about the ignorance that so many like yourself have to the complexity of the world they live in.

I love those guys in Englewood. I've worked hard to understand them, what their lives are like, what the struggle is like and what power and corruption has done to oppress them. There are many good men who WANT to solve the problem, but its not a simple problem and there is not a simple solution. You read about it in an article and think you know what you're talking about. I put myself IN IT to try to understand and help young men. I know what is going on, you only think you know. You don't.

If you have a chance, watch Shannon Sharpe's commentary. He nailed it. And so many people don't realize the complexity of layers that exists beneath his comments because they don't know what he's really referring to.

This is the first time I haven't watched opening weekend. Plus didn't watch Monday night football either.

I know it's totally different but I that was funny how the "no Lochte" t shirt people were ejected from dancing with the Stars..... according to news media. I assume they were being disruptive and vocal. Had they just sat there quietly while wearing their shirts would there freedom of speech been respected.

I'm exercising mine by doing something else and thank goodness for DVR.

It seems certain free speech is fine but not others.

I always love comments like this. Yes, you are clearly a much better person than me because you "care" about the cause.

It has less to do with me "caring" about the cause and more to do with me working to understand what's actually going on. And it's not about me being better than anyone, its that I understand what I'm talking about.

Not a great argument. In the NFL, or any other professional sports league, you're basically livestock. You're an investment. When your value is no longer there, you're gone in a moment. The owners and management doesn't give a rip about what happens to any of them. It's business. And there is nothing wrong with that, but lets not act like the NFL paying an extremely minuscule portion of black men an abundance of money for a very short amount of time is doing the black community a bunch of favors. So, when someone beats the odds and gets to that level for a short amount of time, I have no problem with them using their position use the opportunity to do something for a cause they care about.

This is exactly the right that men and women have fought for. I don't necessarily agree with it or think its effective, but I appreciate that he is legally exercising the right.

As long as 13% of the population continues to kill their own and disrespect themselves they will never get the respect they are looking for. Cause you don't even value your own lives.

Outstanding! I'm not telling you that you should pay attention or care about what he is doing. If you're just tuning it out, you're not the person my comment aimed at.

You've been listening to a bunch of white talk radio and TV. Have you been to those neighborhoods or spoken to anyone who lives there? I get the feeling that you haven't. People want to and are trying to take back their neighborhoods, but its not easy. It's extremely hard, and often times those who try to take back their neighborhoods end up dead. You think those people are disrespecting themselves? The gang members aren't worth an ounce of respect. But they're a powerful minority in those neighborhoods. And they're hard to stop. The people in those neighborhoods are scared. They can't just leave. You don't understand them, but you want to judge them.

Again, listen to Shannon Sharpe's comments.

How do I know? I live and breathe. It's not hard to follow the stats. Entitled victims do not survive very well.

Since BLM started, thousands MORE black lives have been lost in the streets due to the backlash against policing (check out the Fegusson effect). So called leaders like CK focus on hundreds of lives. The focus is in the wrong place. At the end of the day, more black people are dead. I know you think I'm heartless, but that is tragic.
