At some point you accept reality and reality can hurt. No "elite" coach is saying, "Gee I should really take a look at that Nebraska job."
A more realistic scenario would be to strike gold on some young hot prospect and they develop into an elite coach (similar to Roy Williams start at Kansas). Still likely a stretch but far more realistic.

Of course they could have their pick of a lot of people. Other former assistant if they want to go that route would be Alan Huss. But maybe McDermott stays a number of years yet and DeVries takes a shot somewhere else, like Iowa after this season.
