We’ve basically ruined bowl games with this stupid playoff stuff (that has solved nothing) and we are ruining college football with the portal and tranfering.
A few ideas I had that could improve things.
1) Cant enter the portal until after bowl season, or after your team is finished, or after the 1st of the year. Cant enroll for spring semester? Tough crap. Think twice about transferring. Be sure to commit where you want to. This way players are more likely to play in their bowl game to find the best suitors for their services.
2) anyone who opts out of a teams season before its done has to pay back their scholarship. Enforced by NCAA (if they ever enforce anything, just play along) so schools dont have to “look bad”. Believe me it pisses these coaches off when kids opt out but they have to pretend it doesnt so they dont scare away recruits.
3) choose nil or scholarship, not both. If you get paid, pay your own way. People who say free market, thats what it is. Maybe kids will realize just how much money they make in scholarships. Also less likely to transfer then. NCAA will have to get creative in roster number enforcement.
4) can only transfer once without sitting for a whole year. No excuses.

Let me hear it.

Sounds good. Will never happen. The NCAA is nutless now.

Throwing out thoughts as I mull...

Everyone is a mercenary. No loyalty. No love for school and no pride; as long as it's $$$.

Nothing to keep student athletes at your school if you don't have enough cash.

Money laundering supreme

Why do we punish kids for having too many study materials, but turn a blind eye to paying recruits' families' buildings off

This coach spent the night with a recruit's mom, just to get his verbal.

Why do we allow "the tattoo league" and the above, which heavily punished a certain school, but another certain school gets a tap on the wrists?

Some schools institutionalize rape and cover it up. Go to extreme lengths to keep it on the down low... Then a freaking cheating scandal comes out and it's no discipline.... Hmmm.....

The smaller schools can't keep up, so watch for socialism calls in the next few years.

The SEC has been cheating and paying players since the 60s. You really don't think they don't have the cash to pay off the playoff committee?

That. damn. Ham. Sandwich. It provided a huge benefit. Damn.

Bowl games don't mean anything anymore. They used to be prestige for a school. Now players duck out.

The regular season means nothing. If your QB goes down, may as well pack it in for the year.

F&+k Michigan. Jim takes showers in long white socks and pees in the upper deck to conserve water.

It's as if The Godfather and Breaking Bad had a baby, and here we are.

The issue is just who are the courts trying to benefit/protect. It's NOT fans, it's the rights of individual players. Us fans may not like it but the courts don't care whether we like it or not.

You actually like this? Are you cheering the death of the best sports segment of all time?
Curious, how old are you?

If the alternative is going back to kids not getting what they can earn in the free market, then yes, I like this. College football is dying? El oh El. Millions pack the stadiums and watch the games on TV. Billions are wagered.

I'm 41.

This is just the way it is. I like the old days, but oh well, gotta roll with it. What I like is a good college players can actually make money even if they don’t make the NFL. That’s cool.

Also, did you guys see that the NCAA prez wants NIL to be somehow run through the schools and not limited to external NIL collectives? That is smart. Hopefully it happens

You know what else I've noticed. Remember when kids used to get suspended for grades?
Either we've become really serious scholastically or no one cares anymore.
Schools will be quick to *ahem* " Hey we have tutors! and programs! And off hours counselors!!!"

Coach XYZ: "We have the best kids! Our kids have the best grades!!"

Here have a silent personal test office with all the notes... But, please don't read them... "If you don't have to"....

This was all the obvious result before this nil and portal stuff was even implemented. At the time implementation was being discussed, I was spot on in describing exactly what the end result would be... that it would turn into the mercenary shit show we now see... This was the inevitable result.

Sometimes the old way of doing things is the best way. They at least had the foresight to understand that designing the rules in this way would lead to cascading consequences. It's this common sense understanding that no one seems to have anymore, least of all these useless, crusty old ****s on rules' committees that have to justify their cushy positions by making unnecessary changes just for the **** of it and **** everything up.

The one thing I would like to see changed would be for NIL payments to require the top players to play in all games, post season or regular season, unless they are injured. That would allow the bowls to gain back some credibility as well as force players to hold off on entering the portal until the seasons are over.
You think there’s much chance of that happening with top tier athletes though?

Sounds good. Will never happen. The NCAA is nutless now.
And has been de-nutted by recent court decisions with more on the way. This plan would be thrown out as a restraint of trade in the first (of the many) lawsuits that would be filled. The only thing that can help is an antitrust exemption from Congress, and it ain't happening

Never liked the "Bowl System". Heading to Florida for good weather, then getting whacked by the home team.

Since the playoffs, there's no more doubt, like the split decision in 97 of NU & Michigan. That SO sucked. Why should crazy AP propaganda writers be in a position to pick champions? If the amateur status of the game is gone, it was the bowl games that wrecked it. Those players got "gifts", and then some...

I've said it before, bowls are just money grubbers who could care less about the sport. The "granddaddy" Rose Bowl dumped football for chariot racing in its formative years. Look it up. That system is better off dead. Since the CF playoff, the bowls are now known as consolation games. Fact is, they ALWAYS were. Playoffs just brought it out in the open. Sure, the top bowls made money for their schools, but the purse is richer now, and a true champion is crowned. Wish we had a playoff in 97 to prove who was real champ. Also wish we had ref replay when PSU caught the ball out of bounds to beat NU. Times sure have changed, but can't say those were the good old days. Good riddance.

Expanded Playoffs will be better, so long as it avoids total corruption. More schools, more chances to prove themselves, more people watching the sport.

With all the watchers here looking over the portal QBs and such, can't say that the portal or NILs are a bad thing either. I see it as enhanced recruiting. So did Prime, but didn't get him to a bowl game, so it has its limits. As for the amateur status, that was never real to begin with. Just more silly pretend rules. Way back when, the players had more bling than I could afford today. Enhancers, parties, gourmet food, anything they wanted. If money drives them to the NFL, the NIL could drive them to be better players and be in better places. For pay, or whatever.

The only thing I think is ruined by these things is a false sense of sentimentality. Hoops, the FCS, Women's basketball, pro sports, all have championship playoffs. The argument to keep that from a great sport like FBS college football was a bad money grubbing hoax. Glad to be rid of it before I wax off.

OK, now do coaches and their "loyalty" when they take another job. Seems like several of 1-4 should apply to them too. Maybe coaches can take another job only in the months of May or June for #1. Let's change "scholarship" to salary in #2. And maybe coaches have to choose either salary or endorsements/TV deals, etc. for #3. I also especially like #4--"up and coming" coaches need to stop using smaller or non-P5 schools as stepping stones.

And yes, that was sarcasm.

I'd be fine with everyone getting less money at this point, it's ruined the sport. Coaches and admin included. Which is what's going to happen long term, they've taken something that was popular and grew organically and wiped out the foundation of it. Successive generations won't be getting as much money because over time less and less people will be invested. It won't happen over night, it'll be a generational thing where kids just won't care as much so the next generation of fans won't be built. The people taking money today are robbing future players of the same opportunities. I understand the "i got to get mine" attitude, but greed has ruined this thing.

You guys sure do get butthurt at kids getting paid what they're worth.
I will watch Nebraska football regardless of who is on the team. I've never understood the this player is bringing in $20 MILLION!!!! Like who?? Maybe 5 players a year in the entire nation actually matter to move the needle.

It's a pissing match with donors. I didn't see USC fans showing up in droves to watch the best QB in the country and Heisman winner. Good players and winning matters, but it is so overblown at this point.

As much as I've enjoyed college football over the years, it really does seem to be an odd pairing....
I've said it for several years now, this whole thing is headed towards a minor league that really has little/nothing to do with secondary education.

Not at all. Just a solution that would fix some of the issues with transfers, NIL and getting to a point where top players will actually play in bowl games.

One thing that players don't realize is that if they are getting NLI, some of those contracts have some verbiage that will nullify some of the deals. For example, if a QB has appearance obligations for autograph signings or whatever in December but announce they are leaving before those obligations are fulfilled, they could find themselves in breach of contract and subject to not getting paid.

It's a sellers' market. The 128 FBS teams need 3,300 athletes a year. The top 250 recruits or so are going to be able to demand NFL prices for their services. That forces everybody to pay more and more to get even three-star players who aren't going to deliver wins and championships.

For schools who already had elite status when this started, and enjoy nearly limitless resources, the NIL and transfer portal allowed them a stranglehold on their dominant position. For the "have-nots," it is going to be exactly like the facilities arms race from 20 years ago: millions of dollars thrown into a pit, with nothing to show for it.

Nebraska, with a small population, and mid-level financial resources at best, is going to struggle in this environment. I just don't see Union Pacific and Berkshire Hathaway getting in line to toss millions of dollars a 17 year old football players. They are going to have to take the long game, developing lesser-known players, working the transfer portal, and being very selective with what NIL money they have.

Division 1 FBS should have been in a playoff system for years just like the lower divisions , I don’t think we’d have the mess we do simply because if they implemented the playoffs say in 1975 there weren’t near as many bowls

I stopped reading when you said the invitational fixed the bowls and there's no doubt now. There's more doubt and I don't care about splits. It brings up great debate and conversation. Decades later people still argue who was better between Miami and Washington or Nebraska and Michigan. Now you have teams being left out completely before bowl games when they go unbeaten in a P5 conference, which is unprecedented. In the old system FSU would still have an argument. Now their players aee opting out and the bowl game doesnt matter. It would be way more exciting if we had the old system where Michigan would go to play Washington in the Rose, FSU would be playing Bama in the Orange and Texas would be playing OSU/Oregon/Georgia in the Sugar. If FSU wins they probably get a split. Oh well. That's what made college football unique. If the system was bad, why did people follow for so long?

Nowadays the Fandom in general are a bunch of casuals who take everything ESPN claims as gospel.

Not butt hurt - these kids are kidding paid way more than they are worth- it’s a bidding war for unproven and not good enough talent that exceeds what the players are doing. Free agency in nfl works bc the players have succeeded and get paid accordingly- in college most haven’t proved shit

Never going to happen.

CFB is a mess yet it's still the highest viewed programming and revenue maker... every year it changes and morphs and we all see the general direction of where it's heading... someone has a plan for what this looks like in the end...
