I would rather see 8 no byes. But if 12 is it . I like the CC getting the byes because ND cannot be rewarded for not playing in a conference and no risk of an 13th game.

the heart of your issue is that you're specifically upset Ohio State won it all without winning their conference.
you don't seem mad that Texas, Indiana, Penn St, and Tennessee (all teams that Ohio State beat) had that same opportunity.

Agreed. And going back further, the NC game matchup would have been Oregon vs Georgia. Neither team survived their first playoff game. Both were beaten badly too.
A playoff has been needed for a long time. We just need to get rid of the conf championship games and fix the seedings.
Conf championships are pointless. Just call the team with the best record conf champion. And yes, because of variances in schedule strength a two loss team might well be the best team.

OSU had the hardest path to a championship and won it in a dominant manner. Most people considered Tenn, Oregon, Texas, and ND all teams that stood a chance to win the playoff. Most people recognized Boise St, SMU, Clemson, and ASU had little chance and were likely to lose in the opening round. Props to OSU for leaving no doubt on the field.
Exactly. Like these conferences really care if the "best" team wins. They want to A) get more of their teams in, and B) make a shitload of money.
More money to be made by having more playoff teams and keeping teams fresher for the playoff. Georgia's QB was injured in what ended up a meaningless game. With no SEC teams in the final I guarantee that conference is thinking about ditching it.
They need to seed the teams according to final ranking, not giving byes or 3/4 seed to the top team in the shitty conferences. Why should Boise get a 4 seed and bye.. their conference fvcking sucks.
They should change that and we will be fine.
Also, one small change would be to give rostered playoff players a share.. like baseball playoffs. So the ND and OSU players might get a $20k Bonus each player for making it to the final game. No sharing with the rest of the conference, just a bonus for the players on the team
As long it includes ND not receiving a bye. Only chance I see is a G5 (Boise ) champion should not receive a bye .
For the SEC it isn't as big of a deal because they will get multiple teams in most years. For the Big 12 and the ACC, their CCG game might be their only shot at getting one team in. Yeah, they could just declare the team with the best record the champion but for the Big 12 with a 4 way tie, who would that be????
While I think you're right, the sentimental part of me loves the conference championship.
Were we to sneak into the conference championship and upset someone like Ohio State/Oregon without winning the national championship, I would consider the season a sucesss.
Perhaps I'm in the minority but the conference championship, much like NY6 bowl games, leave a team something to hang their hat on.
Without the ACC conference championship game, Clemson doesn't get in the playoffs. Having a conference championship game benefitted the ACC.

Not at all, it has to do with the byes, who gets them, and how that affects the pairing in the first and second rounds.
So you don't really care about determining the best team then. That I guess is the basis for my argument. It appears you are fine with a 3 loss Clemson getting a berth over a 3 loss Alabama team, simply because their league was weak. The results of the CFP validated this Clemson 14 point losers to SEC runner up Texas, and it probably wasn't that close and SMU 28 point losers to Penn St arguably the 3rd best team in the Big Ten.
This is also my rationale for not needing more than 8 teams in the CFP. IF your last 4 to get in are losing an average of 17 points in the CFP, why is this even a discussion?

Agree with everything but the reseed. If you are the 12 seed and beat the 5 especially on their home field, you should play the 4 in then next round. That is a reward for winning that game.
OSU takes games off and it has cost them in the past. It almost cost them this year.

My take is the number of teams was so that the conference winners of the Big 12 and ACC would at least be included, plus the more minor conferences winners might be included as well. An 8 team playoff with no inclusion for conference winners would have been a B1G, SEC and ND affair.

I agree with 2-3 , play it in a Saturday a normal CFB day . But then again I think the final 4 BB should be a Thursday-Saturday.

Major bowls are no longer a thing. In 10 years no player will even know what a "major" bowl is, they will just know this
1. We made the playoffs
2. We are playing in some kind of bowl game
3. We could not win 6 games.
