Number #23 coming off of a 5-7 record. Even if you return all of your starters (idk how many they returned), cracking the pre-season top 25 after a losing season is a bit odd. Discuss.

The horns have plenty of talent. I can see them being a top 25 this season, as much as I don't like them.
Texas always has talent. Yet, they have sucked for years now. I think the higher than deserved ranking has to do with the usual sport's journalist man-crush for the flavor of the month "hot coach."

It's a good thing that those rankings don't really mean anything anymore, because it is a complete joke that they are ranked. No other team, even with talent and a hot new coach would be ranked coming off a 5-7 season. But this is Texas, who the media is desperate to try to get back to relevance, and they will do anything they can to help them get there.

Herman can coach offense, if he's smart enough to have found a good defensive staff, that could get them back on track. Time will tell.

It's a 23rd ranking. It takes 9 wins, sometimes 8 wins, to potentially make it into the top 25. Maybe the media voters think Herman can take texas to 9 wins in his first year.

Here's a little write up from sbnation from a couple years ago looking at Herman's and others first year coaching records.

He took his DC from Houston with him. Gave up 46 to Navy, 38 to SMU, 48 to Memphis and 34 to San Diego St in losses and 31 to Tulsa in a win.

1. Sounds familiar... some coaches prefer to bring along their DCs even when they haven't produced... SmokinWinking

2. Diaco wasn't fired yet, so Orlando was brought along until a better DC comes along after 2 seasons.

3. Maybe that is why they are ranked #23... and not #1 in the new preseason polls! :)

4. They also allowed 0, 3, 10, 14, 16, 18, 23, and 24 points. That's an average of 23 for the whole season. Good enough to rank in the top 35! Oh wait, that got our DC fired

Wouldn't shock me if they win 9 or more. Would not shock me if they lost a bunch too.

But, right now if I had to bet...I would say they end up around 8-9

Dual Threat QBs, which Texas doesn't have on hand. I think they get worse this year, "Turnover" Tim Beck is their OC.

Disagree. Ehlinger is a dual threat QB. He is a true freshman and pushing Buechelle for the starting job. Ehlinger ran for 1300 yards and 20 TDs his junior season. My guess is that Ehlinger wins the job before conference play and Buechelle transfers after the season.

I hate Texas as much as the next guy, but Herman is a good coach, and I really think he is going to turn things around there fast. They will have talent, and with his coaching, they could be scary very soon.

Who knows, it's basically a Houston Cougar coaching staff and strength coach, with the addition of "Turnover" Tim Beck as OC. I they had 2 big upsets for sure but then played terrible against Navy, Tulsa, SMU, Memphis, SDSU, and played close to UCF.

Sometimes these small league wunderkinds, like Brian Kelly ect., just don't pan out in the big leagues. Then again, the Big12 is turning into a Big East type conference.

I really think they don't get much better.

Herman is another shooting star coach, just like Charlie Strong. It could work out, and it could not. If I were a Longhorn fan I'd be concerned that they bet the farm on another guy who had one great year at a mid-major.

UT in the rankings is a total joke. They are there for one reason: The Longhorn Network. ESPN is going to hype them to protect their asset, and voters follow along accordingly.

Lots of politics and influencers around the Texas program. Herman appears to be a solid coach, but coaching Texas Athletics is not for the faint of heart. Oh, and die Longhorns die.

Herman has a little Harbaugh in him as well. He will wear on people he works with and who work for him. Sort of a short fuse guy. It takes its toll.

My son just took a job as a sports announcer for FOX15 TV in Abilene, TX and looks like I'll be following Texas football a little closer....took a trip to Abilene last week to help get settled in and that is football country.

Definitely could be a possibility as you never know, and being under the microscope can mess with your head, but I really think the guy is a stud. When he left OSU, the regressed, and although some of those games at Houston were close, he still won, as well as brought big time talent to Houston. It'll be interesting to watch it play out.

When he was at OSU, he had elite unmatched talent. Only a bad OC like Beck could regress there. I bet Texas D gets worse. Greg Ward was a good dual threat QB.

Ultimately at Texas it always comes down to culture. Guys just get lazy once they step foot on campus, especially if they are highly ranked by rivals. There is an attitude throughout the university where people advertise "I'm rich and don't have to try hard, ha ha."

Nebraska get no respect by anyone anymore, and Texas still gets love like they have been good since Mack Brown left. It is all perception, and how the Sports media portrays us.

I'm fairly confident a Maryland or Missouri or Arkansas or Arizona State offer should not be worth more points on this site than Nebraska.

ESPN and their lack of respect for us, tied together with everything else we have showed on the field. We are now in the same breath as North Carolina St. according to this site

Agree with he had major talent, but Beck isn't the only guy that would have regressed. Good coaches are good coaches, and talent or not he has done a pretty stellar job everywhere he goes. I agree Texas is a monster and those kids do feel entitled because of their rankings, but if he holds serve on his previous coaching record, and can get that talent to play... Look out, Texas will get good in a hurry. Their infrastructure is there.
