Attended practice on Tuesday and have a few observations to pass along. It was very interesting to me how the staff had designed the team period of practice. At any given time during this segment of practice, there was only one group of players practicing. Meaning, one offense and one defense.
ALL other players were standing around watching, joking, and generally not engaged in what was going on. I overheard a myriad of conversations from the players watching that had nothing to do with football.
It was very reminiscent of the movie Miracle, when the US is playing an exhibition game against Norway and 2 players on the sideline bench are talking about a hot girl in the stands within earshot of coach Herb Brooks inciting the famous "again" scene. If you think about it, 22 out of 105 players practicing leaving 83 players standing around watching for a large portion of practice.
On a positive note, Tanner Lee looked as advertised. Tanner was really moving through his progressions quickly and often times hit his 3rd or 4th read. He was also very accurate with both short and deep passes. Receivers all looked strong. Lindsey will be electric if he stays healthy. All the freshman O-lineman looked good in group work. The kid from Austin and the kid from Lincoln East looked legit. If the kid from East puts some weight on and stays healthy, I could see him being a pretty dominant Tackle for us. You can tell he plays angry and that is exactly what this group needs more of. The kid from Austin is clearly the best out of the group at this very moment. Schlicterman (sp) had good flashes as well.
There were some players that I feel were not fit for this level of competition, and it was obvious they were struggling. I wont name names as to not throw anyone under the bus.
Did not pay much attention to defense, although Williams was noticeably quick to the ball at times, and Diaco has an energy that this staff desperately needed.
