Top 25 Safeties in the 2017 Recruiting Class - Where Are They Now?

The top 11 guys were all on the Rivals 100, and a couple of them look like busts.

LSU signed three guys from this list - all three started in 2018 and one is regarded as perhaps the best DB in college football.

Nebraska did not sign any safeties in this class.

1.) Jeffrey Okudah, Ohio State; 5-stars, 6.1 RR, #16 on the Rivals 100, 4th-best prospect in Texas;
Cornerback who had 32 tackles over 13 games in 2018; Had 19 tackles through 14 games in 2017.

Starting safety who also played a little LB in 2018

2.) JaCoby Stevens, Louisiana State; 5-stars, 6.1 RR, #28 on the Rivals 100, 2nd-best prospect in Tennessee;
Had 35 tackles, 1.5 sacks and an interception in 2018; Split time between WR and safety in 2017, appearing in six games that season.

Starting safety for Bama in 2018

3.) Xavier McKinney, Alabama; 4-stars, 6.0 RR, #40 on the Rivals 100, 5th-best prospect in Georgia;
Starting safety for Nick Saban in 2018; Had 73 tackles, 6 TFL, 3 sacks, two interceptions and a forced fumble on the season; Mostly a special teams player in 2017.

4.) Devon Hunter, Virginia Tech; 4-stars, 6.0 RR, #47 on the Rivals 100, 2nd-best prospect in Virginia; Appeared in VaTech's first four games of 2018 as a reserve before sitting the rest of the season to take a redshirt; Appeared in 10 games as a true freshman; Has 9 tackles and a sack through two seasons in Blacksburg.

5.) Paris Ford, Pittsburgh; 4-stars, 6.0 RR, #51 on the Rivals 100, 3rd-best prospect in Pennsylvania; Reserve cornerback who appeared in nine games in 2018 and had 5 tackles on the season; Redshirted in 2017.

6.) Richard LeCounte, Georgia; 4-stars, 6.0 RR, #58 on the Rivals 100, 7th-best prospect in Georgia;
Starting safety who was Georgia's leading tackler with 74 in 2018; Also had 2 forced fumbles, a TFL and an interception last season; Appeared in ten games, starting one as a true freshman in 2017 and had 15 tackles that year.

7.) Bubba Bolden, Southern Cal; 4-stars, 6.0 RR, #61 on the Rivals 100, 3rd-best prospect in Nevada; Was suspended for all of 2018 due to a Title IX student conduct violation; Has since said that he is transferring to Miami; Had 8 tackles in 13 games as a true freshman.

8.) Hamsah Nasirildeen, Florida State; 4-stars, 6.0 RR, #63 on the Rivals 100, #1-overall prospect in North Carolina;
Started five games at safety for FSU in 2018; Led the Seminoles with 91 tackles and also had an interception; Appeared in all 13 games as a true freshman and had 29 tackles that year; Was moved to linebacker this spring.

9.) Grant Delpit, Louisiana State; 4-stars, 6.0 RR, #70 on the Rivals 100, 14th-best prospect in Florida;
Two-year starter at safety and was a first-team All-American in 2018, as well as first-team All-SEC; Over two seasons he has 134 tackles, 5 sacks, 5 INTs and a forced fumble.

10.) Cyrus Fagan, Florida State; 4-stars, 5.9 RR, #81 on the Rivals 100, 15th-best prospect in Florida; Reserve safety in 2018 who had 24 tackles; Played seven games and had 6 tackles that year; Came out of spring ball as FSU's 2nd-string strong safety.

11.) Maleik Gray, Tennessee; 4-stars, 5.9 RR, #86 on the Rivals 100, 6th-best prospect in Tennessee; Appeared in one game in 2018 and two games in 2017 and has not registered any stats; Exited spring ball this month as Tennessee's 3rd-string cornerback.

12.) Isaiah Pryor, Ohio State; 4-stars, 5.9 RR, #106 on the Rivals 250, 20th-best prospect in Florida; Starting safety who had 31 tackles, a TFL, and an interception in 13 games in 2018; As a reserve in 2017, he had 13 tackles and a TFL.

13.) Derrick Tucker, Texas A&M; 4-stars, 5.9 RR, #140 on the Rivals 250, 18th-best prospect in Texas; Two-year starter at safety for the Aggies; Over two seasons, he has 82 tackles, a TFL, an interception and a forced fumble.

14.) Deon Jones, Maryland; 4-stars, 5.9 RR, #143 on the Rivals 250, 3rd-best prospect in Maryland; Reserve safety in 2018 and had 17 tackles, a TFL and a forced fumble in 11 games; Redshirted in 2017.

15.) Robert Barnes, Oklahoma; 4-stars, 5.9 RR, #158 on the Rivals 250, 22nd-best prospect in Texas; Started the last 8 games of 2018 at safety for the Sooners, missing three games due to injury; Had 54 tackles, an interception and a forced fumble on the season; Appeared in ten games as a true freshman and had 10 tackles and an interception that year.

Part-time starter in 2018 and had 31 tackles and an interception last season; Mostly a special teams player in 2017 and had 4 tackles on the season.

17.) Daniel Wright, Alabama; 4-stars, 5.9 RR, #167 on the Rivals 250, 31st-best prospect in Florida; Reserve in the first four games of 2018 before suffering a shoulder injury that forced him to miss the remainder of the season; Played in all 14 games as a freshman in 2017, mostly on special teams; Has 18 tackles so far in his career.

18.) Chaz Ah You, Brigham Young; 4-stars, 5.9 RR, #174 on the Rivals 250, 3rd-best prospect in Utah; Just returned from his LDS mission and did not play in 2018; Appeared in 7 games in 2017 and had 9 tackles and a TFL.

20.) R.J. Potts, Cincinnati; 4-stars, 5.8 RR, #210 on the Rivals 250, 2nd-best prospect in Indiana; Reserve linebacker in 2018 who had 11 tackles and 0.5 TFL; Redshirted in 2017.

21.) Brian Edwards, Florida; 4-stars, 5.8 RR, #221 on the Rivals 250, 35th-best prospect in Florida; Appeared in 8 games as a reserve and special teams player in 2018; Appeared in 10 games as a true freshman; Has seven tackles over two seasons.

22.) Markquese Bell, Maryland; 4-stars, 5.8 RR, #234 on the Rivals 250, 5th-best prospect in New Jersey; Spent 2018 at Coffeyville CC in Kansas; Was suspended for an unspecified violation of team rules before the season opener in 2017 and announced that November that he was leaving Maryland, having never played a game there; Bell committed to Florida A&M in the latest signing period.

23.) Derrek Pitts, West Virginia; 4-stars, 5.8 RR, #1-overall prospect in West Virginia; Saw action in 12 games and started two games at cornerback in 2018; Had 27 tackles, 5 TFL, a sack, an interception and a forced fumble on the season; Appeared in ten games as a reserve safety as a true freshman and had 9 tackles on the season.

24.) Kyriq McDonald, Alabama; 4-stars, 5.8 RR, 16th-best prospect in Alabama; Transferring to Cincinnati for the 2019 season; Appeared in 11 games in 2018 for Bama and had 7 tackles on the season; Redshirted in 2017.

25.) Brandon McKinney, Washington; 4-stars, 5.8 RR, 38th-best prospect in California; Appeared in all 14 games in 2018 and started the bowl game for UW; Reserve in 2017; Has 29 tackles and a TFL in 27 games over two seasons.
