1568 - Mary Queen of Scots was defeated at the Battle of Langside and immediately fled to North England.

1607 - English colonists arrived by ship at the site of what became the Jamestown settlement in Virginia (the colonists went ashore the next day).

1846 - The United States formally declared war on Mexico after several days of fighting.

1917 - Three shepherd children reported seeing a vision of the Virgin Mary near Fatima, Portugal; it was the first of six such apparitions that the children claimed to have witnessed.

1938 - Louis Armstrong and his orchestra recorded the jazz classic "When the Saints Go Marcing In."

1940 - Winston Churchill gave his first speech as prime minister, saying, "I have nothing to offer but blood, toil, tears and sweat."

1981 - Pope John Paul II was shot and wounded by Mehmet Ali Agca as he drove through a crowd in St. Peter's Square, Rome.

1985 - A confrontation between Philadelphia authorities and the radical group MOVE ended as police dropped a bomb onto the group’s row house, igniting a fire that killed 11 people and destroyed 61 homes.

1994 - President Bill Clinton nominated federal appeals Judge Stephen G. Breyer to the U.S. Supreme Court to replace retiring Justice Harry A. Blackmun; Breyer went on to win Senate confirmation.

2002 - President George W. Bush announced that he and Russian President Vladimir Putin would sign a treaty to shrink their countries’ nuclear arsenals by two-thirds.

2016 - The Obama administration issued a directive requiring public schools to permit transgender students to use bathrooms and locker rooms consistent with their chosen gender identity.

2018 - "Superman" actress Margot Kidder was found dead by a friend near her Montana home in what was later ruled a suicide from a drug and alcohol overdose; she was 69 years old.

2019 - Doris Day, the sunny blond film star and singer who appeared in comedic roles opposite Rock Hudson and Cary Grant in the 1950s and 1960s, died at her California home at the age of 97.

2020 - The Wisconsin Supreme Court struck down Gov. Tony Evers’ coronavirus stay-at-home order, ruling that his administration had overstepped its authority by extending the order for another month.

1953 - Willie Mays (New York Giants) and Darryl Spencer (New York Giants) each hit two homeruns and a triple in the same game.

1958 - Stan Musial became the 8th player in major league history to get 3,000 hits.

1967 - An octagonal-shaped boxing ring is tested out in an attempt to avoid corner injuries.

1972 - The Milwaukee Brewers beat the Minnesota Twins, 4-3, in 22 innings. The game was actually started on May 12.

1973 - Tennis male chauvinist Bobby Riggs defeated Margaret Smith Court, 6-2, 6-1 in front of a worldwide television audience. (He would lose later in the year to Billie Jean King.)

1976 - The New York Nets defeat the Denver Nuggets in six games to win the final ABA championship.

1983 - Reggie Jackson became the first major league player to strike out 2,000 times.

1997 - Eddie Murray becomes the sixth player in MLB history to play in 3,000 games.
