Too many on here keep on fantasizing about the 90's lately

I can't imagine there's anyone who thinks Steve Pederson managed the hiring of a new coach well. What I get tired of is the idea that just because Callahan failed, it means we were wrong to fire Solich. No, they were both coaches who shouldn't have ever coached here.

Agreed.

Neither is Riley though, and frankly of all the hires Riley was the worst and most embarrassing.

I'd been fine with another Coach than Solich, but every guy Pederson had in mind except maybe Zimmer was going to be bad hire changing our culture which it did.

Solich winning pct in school history suggest you're wrong about ever Coaching at Nebraska.

You have you're opinion and I have fine I like you so let's just leave it that.

Solich was here for 6 years and could have been around longer but Pederson has his own agenda..

Not defending Peelini but he was here for 7 years with 9-10 win seasons and 3 conference division titles..

Callahan and Riley are the revolving door for good reason.

Riley is not a revolving door. He's loyal. You couldn't ask for a better employee. We haven't see the fruits of his recruiting quite yet. He gets at least 4-5 years barring a collapse. I hope you guys aren't rooting for that just to be right.

Are you fully convinced we can't improve at all from here on out? I always get a chuckle of the fire Diaco threads after two games here, or the we won't win another game threads after N. Illinois.

Come on-what indications were there that Solich was on his way to turning things around? 9 wins, but 3 blowout losses to the 3 good teams we played his last season? I thought we were supposed to be about winning championships. After Osborne's recruits were done, he was far from ever doing that. Keeping Solich would have said that we were content with 9 win seasons and nothing more. Do we really have to rehash 14 years ago anyway? He's gone to Ohio and done well by the standards of a program with no tradition to speak of, but he's done nothing more than that, and certainly nothing to make someone think-"oh, we should have kept him".

You are so right. Solich era had to end. I loved Eric Crouch, but you could see it was never going to get beyond that. Maybe if the 2001 team had the 1999 D. Unfortunately, Solich could not innovate on O. Or recruit. Riley is doing just that.

When you look at who we could have had instead of Solich had we actually done a search when TO retired, I would say Solich should never have been our coach. Nobody will ever know, but Mack Brown and Barry Alvarez have both been mentioned as names that almost certainly would have come here. I would have taken either one of those in a heartbeat over Solich. The Nebraska job was as valuable as it's ever been, and we just handed the job off to Solich because of a promise TO supposedly made to him. That is what sowed the seeds of where we have been for the last 20 years.

He's just has to sack Cav or maybe I won't back him. I'm not sure on that. Anyone else not like the guy managing the pipeline? Why isn't Rimington doing that?
Phew, I guess it’s okay for others to say he needs to let Cav go since you are. God forbid others call out coaches and be right about it.

Yes. Riley has a history of mediocrity that spans multiple decades. I thought it would continue here when he was hired. I was right on the money. I think it will continue into the future.

No reason to think otherwise.

As we've all seen time and time again, getting the right guy isn't exactly easy.
Of course it's not easy. But we're not even going to try because we're scared what might happen? It's obvious Riley isn't the right guy. We need to keep trying until we do get the right guy.

Never heard either one being a fact to be the next Coach at Nebraska.... But I would have taken either one in a heartbeat too....

But the downward spiral started with Pederson not TO.

The fans got what they wanted in Riley.

Our last coach was a poor recruiter but somehow he farted 9 wins and 4 division titles. Without even working hard.

I disagree. Solich was never cut out to be a big time college football coach. No major conference school even gave him a serious look after he was fired. You'd think somebody would have given him a look with his record if he really was worthy of coaching at a major conference school.

Those were the days my friend
We thought they would never end
We'd sing and laugh forever and a day
We'd live the life we choose
We'd fight and never lose
Those were the days, yes those were the days
Is that all there is to a fire?
Is that all there is?
If that's all there is my friend then let's keep dancing.
Let's break out the booze and have a ball.

0.753 winning percentage for Solich, not bad. Recruiting was his downfall, but when he had good players, he did ok. Not saying he was ever going to win a NC, after all, it took Osborne 23 years to get there, and Frank was not seen as an Osborne clone as far as HC level is concerned. Nebraska these past 19 years is where it's supposed to be because it was meant to be. Things happen for a reason, and Nebraska, after having huge success with Devaney and Osborne, is supposed to be the program it's been for nearly two decades, that's just the way it goes.

I personally like Mike Riley but don't pretend to think he will take Nebraska back to the 70's, 80's, 90's and play for the brass ring. He's basically a safe hire by the former AD, who was brought in to soothe a program that was fractured in more than a few places, I would think that Eichorst would admit that he saw Riley as a guy who could heal some wounds.

As far as the future goes, who knows what that will bring, more of the same, maybe more winning, or more losing. There's no guarantee that the next coach, or the one after him, will do any better than the ones who went before. The next coach, whoever it is, will be the right coach, until he proves he's the wrong coach. That's the vicious cycle of major college football.

One thing I am, however, as they say in the financial world, still "bullish" on the Huskers, they will beat Wisconsin Saturday by hook or by crook!

Why do you think Mack Brown would have done so well here? He was a solid coach, but it takes a special coach to do what a lot of Husker fans want done. Solich should have at least got one more year. He retooled his staff and improved. If anything, fire him the prior year.

Given the horrific start it was understandable. It's not like the defense did not give up 42 points in one half alone. Thank god since then they have gotten better much better.

We just beat the two worst teams in the conference and everyone is really happy about that. This should tell you where the fan expectations are.

I hope we improve in fact I am counting on it. Riley gets the year to right the ship

Penalty flag! 5 yard penalty for trying to draw us offsides. Rimington is supposed to be the OL coach now?

was thinking around 6 ..this has to go down

Our history of firing and hiring coaches so often has also been pretty indicative that it may not be the answer

Callahan was here for four years. Most admit he needed to go. A losing season coupled with an inept D made it very hard to see that we were headed in the right direction.

Pelini was here for seven years. Most admit he needed to go. He needed to go not because of win percentage, but because of huge blowout losses and because he was an a-hole.

Riley is a great guy and easy to pull for. But, if he finishes .500 or under in year three, that will be 2 out of three seasons under .500. In the lone winning season, he will have had a total collapse to end the season. If he is removed after another losing season this year, very few are going to question NU making a move.

You can question the move as the wrong one in your opinion, but to make it sound like NU is making a change EVERY 2-3 years is a poor narrative.

I'm not willing to say he's the right guy. But I am willing to say it's too early to make definitive statements that he isn't

After decades of barely mediocre coaching, he is suddenly going to become something he has never been.....a champion.

Why in the hell do people act like Mike Riley is a 32 year old guy that has been a coordinator for 4 years prior and we need to see what he can really do as a head coach?

I have seen. He hasn’t been coaching for only 2 years. He has a long track record. And it isn’t very good.

he will get time enough to show he can win, if he has a losing record this year I dont know many people that would have a lot of confidence in that. However some of it depends on how we lose.

He is good employee??

I agree he has to win more than he loses, but he's not as bad as many on here are saying.

Is it his .544 record in NCAA football that impresses you or his .291 record in the NFL?

Sorry. We won 9 games last year. Riley has a lot to fix. You don't get to instant conference contenders with the roster and culture he inherited. He's going to get more than three years time unless this team craters. That's just the way it is. I don't care if you never liked the hire from the get go. Your agenda is obvious.

I agree. Never tried to hide my agenda.

And I do hope I am completely wrong. I just don’t think I am.

If Riley doesn't win the division this year, he'll be our first coach since Bill Jennings to not win the division or the conference in his first 3 years.

It shouldn't take 4-5 years to turn things around at a program with virtually unlimited resources. Add in the fact that we play in the weakest P5 division in college football, and have been out-recruiting the other teams in our division by a significant margin. Anything less than 8 wins with this schedule should be considered a huge failure.
