I know it's hard. I loved being on top of the world. Things have changed.

I think we can win with a pro style offense. It's hard for many to be patient, especially when you think that we just can't win with Riley.

I think that Riley is building a solid foundation for the future. He does have to win enough to survive the year. The pitchfork crowd will demand that.

However, if we don't give Riley enough time to address the depth issues then we be stuck in a never ending coaching carrusel. I like the direction we're heading.

I think that Cav has to go. It's too bad that Riley didn't make the move after last season, like he did with Banker. I'm not sure that Riley will survive. It's frustrating for sure.

I know I'm not alone on this. We all want to win. I hope we're making progress. Did we see enough of it in Game 5? We'll find out next week. We may not win, but I hope that we're at least competitive.

Those were the days my friend
We thought they would never end
We'd sing and laugh forever and a day
We'd live the life we choose
We'd fight and never lose
Those were the days, yes those were the days

I expect to be competitive not totally dominant. 90s will probably never happen again. It will take the perfect storm to get that done.

The 90's hell did we also forget the 80's, 70's and 60's (62-69)...

I would like to see Riley win but I have seen enough the first 5 games to believe that we won't be lucky enough too make a bowl game by winning 3 more games.

Riley made a big mistake bringing his offensive line coach and defensive coordinator with him to Lincoln...
We have become the Corvallis Huskers.....

Man you convinced me. Here I've been for the past 20 years expecting undefeated seasons every year only to come up disappointed almost to the point of doing physical harm to myself. Thanks for relaying that fact things have changed because otherwise I would have never have known. Sorry for thinking we just can't win big with Riley. It's not like there is 18 years or so of evidence of the contrary. Your last sentence of your own post should tell where we are at right now.....in year #3.

Come on guys. If we are 8-4 or 7-5 that is a great season. Only 5-7 or 4-8 seasons are bad now. We can’t be like these other teams now that are consistently in the Top 25. We just need to finish at #22 once ever 6 years and if you expect more than that all you dream of is the 90s.

We should probably just let our facilities go to waste also along with not even trying for California, Florida and Texas kids. Anything over a $3 million salary is a waste of money on a coach. Plus, we only need a nice guy. There are lots of those.

He's just has to sack Cav or maybe I won't back him. I'm not sure on that. Anyone else not like the guy managing the pipeline? Why isn't Rimington doing that?

Just don't think that Riley is as bad as many on here are saying.

I didn't say he was bad. I'm saying he made bad hiring decisions when being hired as Head Coach from the start.... Too his credit he has made some changes but he had no choice.

Did coach Cav have Ryker Fyfe throw 50 times against the worst rush defense in the Big Ten in the rain, wind, and fog and lose to a god awful 2-10 Purdue team?
damn, you guys are really living in the past.

That year was an anomaly steeped in issues all around. Move on.

Yep, time to start over again. Hasn't worked the last four hires, but dammit it's gonna work this time.... By my count, 40/44 players in the two deep on Friday are coming back, a defense that has and will continue to improve throughout the year, and the best recruiting job we've seen in over a decade. The "fire everyone" "fire them now" "no chance we improve" narrative is just tiring and lazy

I’ll talk about 2015, 2016, or 2017. All have their fair share of embarrassment.

What you call an anomaly seems like a trend to me. I guess that is where the disconnect is. I cannot fathom how anyone can look at this coach and see success on the horizon. When I invest my money or bet on Sports....I don’t just hope and pray or drink koolaid. I look at history. That damn history you seem to think is so ancient.

Except there is one problem with history. It is a great indicator of the future. Maybe you guys should try adding that basic fact of life to your thought process.

The lack of improvement and is even more tiring. And by my count, with everything you just said year 4 should be completely excuse free. Or do you have some saved up already for a ho-hum 7-5 type season?

Like you I hope he wins out and makes it tough on a new AD but unlike you I see nothing that suggests he is gonna be the answer or building a solid foundation--facts are he is an average football coach. Like Callahan he was happy with a below average DC and was too late/ didn't have the forethought to see that he could do better. His ultimate undoing IMHO

Our history of firing and hiring coaches so often has also been pretty indicative that it may not be the answer

Solich was here for 6 years and could have been around longer but Pederson has his own agenda..

Not defending Peelini but he was here for 7 years with 9-10 win seasons and 3 conference division titles..

Callahan and Riley are the revolving door for good reason.

Yes, the schedule of death we have! Kidding aside, I'm just as frustrated as anyone by seeing poor play. But unless this season is just has a complete train wreck as a finish, it would be absurd to fire Riley and start over..again. I know we live in a microwave society of wanting it and wanting it now, but sometimes in life you need to be patient. If he doesn't show rapid improvement next year, then I'll be the first to say it's time for a change.

Hiring the wrong coaches.

I am all for firing the wrong guys. No reason to hold onto them.

Get the right guy and it all changes. Riley is not the right guy.
As we've all seen time and time again, getting the right guy isn't exactly easy.

Here is the problem. I hear about him improving all the time. Every year it is just, “wait til next year”.

I can’t believe that with the short lives we have, we are always gonna wait til next year so Riley can have a more comfortable retirement account.

Come on-what indications were there that Solich was on his way to turning things around? 9 wins, but 3 blowout losses to the 3 good teams we played his last season? I thought we were supposed to be about winning championships. After Osborne's recruits were done, he was far from ever doing that. Keeping Solich would have said that we were content with 9 win seasons and nothing more. Do we really have to rehash 14 years ago anyway? He's gone to Ohio and done well by the standards of a program with no tradition to speak of, but he's done nothing more than that, and certainly nothing to make someone think-"oh, we should have kept him".

Absolutely true. Last time we didn’t even make an effort though, which is the most maddening part of all. That is what pissed me off so much when he was hired. I knew we were looking at least out til 2022 or 2023 before we could have a chance to win again with a good coach.

How was our effort in 2007? Bo Pelini or Turner Gill. Boy, we were after the cream of the crop, weren't we?

We'll never know but we wouldn't have a had 2 losing seasons and a good chance of playing in the B12 CCG more than once..

My point was that 6 and 7 years isn't a revolving door of head Coach. You seldom see Head Coach around for 10 years or longer except for the very elite Coach's.

Well year one to year two he had a 3 game improvement.. not going to get to that this year, but you can't look at things so black and white. Context is necessary in looking at the whole picture of Riley and where this program is headed. Improved recruiting, improved assistant hires, and a roster that will bring back 40/44 in the two deep back. I appreciate a civil conversation, but we're going to agree to disagree on Riley getting the can now. If the mediocrity continues onto next year, then I'll share your sentiments

Oh, really? I wasn't aware there was a way to play things out like that. Enlighten us all game by game on how things really would have gone had we kept Solich. I always did want to know, and now you apparently know.

That is reasonable, as long as next year by improvement you mean we reach a level where we are not a complete embarrassment. Which we are.

Next year would have to be at least 8 wins and competitive in 2 of the 4 losses and the other two losses can’t be 50 point blowouts.

It isn’t much to ask for, especially when that is the bottom of Pelini level.

I am the opposite of a pro Solich guy but the chance of a losing season would have been much much lower under Solich simply due to where we were in 2003 and how it didn’t transition to Cally at all.

I think our biggest mistake back then was hiring a coach whose system was quite different than the one in place. A good coach who favored a more physical approach already had that much established. We got ourselves a fancy new WCO at Nebraska thus the need for different personnel. I think system change hurts more than anything..

That was my point I'm not a pro Solich but I am and was anti Pederson for botching up the hire process which everyone on this board would agree with... He was the start of turning this program in the wrong direction.

I can't imagine there's anyone who thinks Steve Pederson managed the hiring of a new coach well. What I get tired of is the idea that just because Callahan failed, it means we were wrong to fire Solich. No, they were both coaches who shouldn't have ever coached here.

90's? Heck, let's go back to the Big 8 days when the Huskers and Oklahoma ruled the conference. When we complained about going to the Orange Bowl - AGAIN! Winking
