Quick hits, news and notes from Nebraska’s Wednesday practice.

— Nebraska head coach Mike Riley announced Wednesday that quarterback Tommy Armstrong is continuing to progress through the concussion protocol, and will practice Thursday. If things go well there, Armstrong could be cleared to play Saturday against Minnesota. Riley noted that Armstrong has yet to be cleared to return to game action, yet.

— Nebraska guard Jerald Foster said he has been cleared to play against Minnesota if needed, and that he saw some reps with the top group on Wednesday. Foster said he has felt good coming back, and that his conditioning shouldn’t be an issue. Foster said he’s unsure what the coaches have planned for him for this weekend. Foster said the injury was to his MCL.

— Offensive coordinator Danny Langsdorf on Foster’s return: “He’s admitted himself he has to knock some rust off and get in shape, but he’s been a pleasant surprise,” Langsdorf said. “He’s looked good. It seems like he’s coming right back into the mix without any hangups.”

— Nebraska had its original projected starting lineup back together for the first time on Wednesday since August. Langsdorf said it was good to see that group back together during Wednesday’s practice.

— Langsdorf said the Huskers' reliance on Terrell Newby as the featured back has been primarily injury-related with Devine Ozigbo battling an ankle injury. The second-year offensive coordinator said he would like to see more of a rotation this week at that spot.

— Nebraska offensive line coach Mike Cavanaugh said Cole Conrad will get the start at right tackle against Minnesota in place of David Knevel.

— Foster said he was cleared on Sunday and returned to practice on Tuesday. He admitted to being slightly rusty during Tuesday’s practice, but said he felt good on Wednesday. Foster said that all along, he had been told he could return to action within three to four months of the injury that he sustained in fall camp.

Kid wants to play let..Let'em play if he wants. But only if he want hurt.

Minnesota has a good pass rusher at DE.

Not understanding. Foster is a guard, he wouldn't be blocking a DE. That's for our OT's. We need all the depth we can get for our O line for final 3 games and bowl. If he's cleared and in shape why would he get hurt?? He's itching to play and will still have 2 years left.

Incomplete thought...Foster is who I was referring too...Let him play if he won't hurt the team.

With Conrad starting we could be susceptible to their pass rushers. They have a pretty good one.

Tommy....idk....it's up to him and his family. If he is cleared at all.

I know I sound like a broken record, but I would like Tommy to sit this game out, just to be a little on the cautious side. Maybe he can play and will be alright, guess I can't shake that image of him laying on the sideline looking lifeless.:(

If the doctor's legitimately clear him I want him to play.

Thanks HBK. You are awesome!
Quick hits
***Along with Foster, Tanner Farmer and David Knevel also practiced on the offensive line for the second day in a row. Cavanaugh wasn't shy about his feelings on getting Farmer back in the mix at right guard.

“He’s a physical guy, so having him back will be good,” Cavanaugh said.

***Ryker Fyfe said he was still preparing this week as if he’s going to be the starter, but offensive coordinator Danny Langsdorf said the staff is also preparing its game plan around the chances of either Armstrong or Fyfe being the quarterback.

***While Knevel has been practicing this week, Cavanaugh said Cole Conrad would start at right tackle against Minnesota.

***Cavanaugh said he’s noticed Conrad has been hanging out a lot with Nick Gates off the field, which he obviously likes. Cavanaugh said he thinks Conrad would be a very good player down the road.

***Should NU have to turn to Zack Darlington at all, Langsdorf said they have some packages in pace to work around his abilities. Langsdorf said Darlington has picked up the QB position well again after moving to receiver this spring.

Now you're just kissing ass. :D

Thanks again, my friend!

I really hope Foster can play! It would be nice to have a OL of his caliber rested and ready to go

"I think that he wants to be back for sure," Riley said. "Badly... He loves to play and compete. But, in a deal like this, he's not in charge and neither am I. Somebody else will tell us. We just follow the biology and protocol, and see what we can get."

Do you know how many pressures and sacks Cole Conrad surrendered vs. Ohio State's DE's?

1 pressure
0 sacks.

Conrad and Knevel combined this season have allowed a combined 14 pressures and only 2 sacks.

Nebraska's weakness along the O-line has been in the interior. Hahn and Utter have been really bad. When Farmer was hurt, it got even worse. Very few teams can run the football with weakness between the tackles.

Knevel has been much maligned because he seems to be the type of player who really pays for his mistakes thru miscommunication or poor reads. However, he's also shown the ability to learn and adapt. He was actually really damn good vs. Oregon and Northwestern. But the bad ankle injury has basically hampered his development. Conrad doesn't have the same talent ceiling as Knevel, but he has displayed better toughness and a different kind of resiliency. He's basically competing with a mindset that won't allow someone to whoop his ass.

People need to refrain from grouping Cole in with Hahn and Utter as well. Conrad is definitely a walk on, but he's also a much better athlete than those two.

Did you see Pro Football Focus had Hahn graded as one of the worst OL in the nation?

If cleared, it's up to TA and his fam.

So it would seem that if it's just a case of Foster shaking off rust and he is good to go physically, he will be taking Hahn's spot for the remainder of the games.

Honestly, I think if Foster has the conditioning aspect down, he is a better option, even rusty.

So down the stretch we could be looking at the line we were supposed to have at the beginning, with Conrad possibly playing as much or more than Knevel.

I watched the game...we barely had the ball..And called 3 step drop deep throws....To prevent sacks and pressures......what have you been watching the past 3 weeks please.

Tape don't lie stats do.......And Tommy doesn't wait to get sacked..

Tommy missed most of the game. The bulk of the pressure came through in the interior.

The point is....they have a good pass rusher and we allow pressure...name a lineman.

All we did was throw deep on 3rd down....you shouldn't give up a sack...on a 3 step drop and throw deep.

I feel like I should know this answer, but isn't a little late in the season to be rushing Foster into action? Wouldn't it be better to wait until next year at this point?

He could wait and petition for a sixth year, but he does have two years after this and perhaps the thinking is we could really use him now.
