1827 - Composer Ludwig van Beethoven died in Vienna, Austria at age 56.

1874 - Poet Robert Frost was born in San Francisco.

1885 - The Eastman Dry Plate and Film Co. of Rochester, New York manufactured the first commercial motion picture film.

1892 - Poet Walt Whitman died at age 72.

1911 - Playwright Tennessee Williams was born in Columbus, Mississippi.

1945 - The battle of Iwo Jima ended. Nearly 22,000 Japanese troops were killed or captured in the fighting and more than 4,500 American troops were killed.

1964 - The musical "Funny Girl", starring Barbara Streisand, opened on Broadway.

1971 - East Pakistan proclaimed its independence and changed its name to Bangladesh.

1979 - The Camp David peace treaty was signed by Israeli Prime Minister Menachem Begin and Egyptian President Anwar Sadat at the White House, ending 30 years of war between the two countries.

1982 - Groundbreaking for the Vietnam Veterans Memorial took place in Washington, D.C.

1997 - The bodies of 39 members of the Heaven's Gate techno-religious cult who had committed suicide were found inside a mansion in Rancho Santa Fe, California.

1999 - Dr. Jack Kevorkian was convicted of second-degree murder for giving a lethal injection to an ailing man whose death was shown on "60 Minutes".

2000 - Vladimir Putin was elected president of Russia.

2011 - More than 250,000 people took to the streets of London to protest the toughest spending cuts since World War II.

2011 - Former Democratic Vice Presidential candidate Geraldine Ferraro, the first female major party nominee for the office, died at age 75.

1931 - Boston Bruins coach Art Ross became the first NHL coach to pull his goalie for an extra attacker during the Stanley Cup playoff semifinals.

1949 - Kentucky defeated Oklahoma State 46-36 to win the NCAA Tournament.

1952 - Kansas defeated St. John's 80-66 to win the NCAA Tournament.

1972 - The Los Angeles Lakers set a new NBA single-season win-loss mark with a final regular season record of 69-13. (The record would stand until the 1995-96 season when the Chicago Bulls went 72-10.)

1972 - UCLA won its sixth consecutive national championship with an 81-76 win over Florida State in the NCAA Tournament.

1973 - UCLA won a record seventh straight national championship with an 87-66 win over LSU in the NCAA Tournament final.

1974 - George Foreman KO'd Ken Norton to retain the heavyweight boxing championship.

1987 - Nebraska defeated Arkansas-Little Rock 76-67 in overtime in the third place game of the NIT Tournament in New York

1992 - A judge in Indianapolis sentenced former heavyweight boxing champion Mike Tyson to six years in prison for raping a Miss Black America contestant.

1995 - The United States collected a record 424 medals, including 169 golds, as the Pan American Games came to a close.

1996 - Nebraska defeated Tulane 90-78 to advance to the championship game of the NIT.

2003 - Emmitt Smith signed a two-year contract with the Arizona Cardinals.

2006 - George Mason upset Connecticut 86-84 in overtime to advance to the Final Four.

2008 - Chris Webber announced his retirement from the NBA.

2011 - Butler reached the Final Four for the second year in a row with a 74-71 win over Florida in the Southeast Regional final.

2014 - The National Labor Relations Board ruled that Northwestern University football players are employees of the university and should therefore be entitled to be represented in collective bargaining.
