1496 - Christopher Columbus concluded his second visit to the Western Hemisphere as he left Hispaniola for Spain.

1629 - Charles I of England dissolves Parliament and rules alone for 11 years.

1785 - Thomas Jefferson is appointed minister to France, succeeding Benjamin Franklin.

1848 - Congress ratifies the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, ending the Mexican War.

1864 - Ulysses S. Grant becomes commander of Union armies during the Civil War.

1876 - The first telephone call was made by Alexander Graham Bell.

1933 - A 6.4 magnitude earthquake struck Long Beach, California, resulting in 120 deaths.

1948 - The body of Jan Masaryk, Czechoslovakia's anti-Communist foreign minister was found. Officially ruled a suicide, the real cause of death has never been proven.

1949 - Nazi wartime broadcaster Mildred E. Gillars, also known as "Axis Sally" was convicted in Washington, D.C. of treason. (She served 12 years in prison.)

1957 - Terrorist mastermind Osama bin Laden was born in Saudi Arabia.

1969 - James Earl Ray was sentenced in Memphis, Tennessee to 99 years in prison for the murder of Martin Luther King Jr. in April 1968.

1973 - The Pink Floyd album "The Dark Side of the Moon" was released.

1985 - Konstantin U. Chernenko, who was the Soviet Union's leader for 13 months, died at age 73; he was succeeded by Mikhail Gorbachev.

1987 - The Vatican issued a 40-page document on scientific techniques involving procreation, condemning such practices as surrogate motherhood, test-tube births and cloning.

1993 - Dr. David Gunn was shot to death outside a Pensacola, Florida abortion clinic. (Shooter Michael Griffin is serving a life sentence.)

2004 - Teenage sniper Lee Boyd Malvo was sentenced to life in prison for his role in the Washington, D.C. area sniper attacks.

2008 - New York Gov. Eliot Spitzer apologized after allegations surfaced that he had paid thousands of dollars for a high-end call girl, a scandal which eventually led to his resignation.

1896 - After Bob Fitzsimmons knocks out much larger Jim Corbett to win world heavyweight championship he says, "The bigger they are, the harder they fall".

1951 - FBI director J. Edgar Hoover declines offer to become next commissioner of Major League Baseball.

1963 - Pete Rose debuts with hits in his two first at bats in spring training.

1963 - Wilt Chamberlain of the Philadelphia Warriors scores 70 points in a game against the Syracuse Nationals.

1982 - Travis Jackson and Happy Chandler elected to Baseball Hall of Fame.

1983 - Walter Alston, Los Angeles Dodgers manager, elected to Hall of Fame.

1986 - Ernie Lombardi, National League Most Valuable Player in 1938, and Bobby Doerr, elected to Baseball Hall of Fame.

1991 - Eddie Sutton becomes the first coach in NCAA history to coach four different schools in the NCAA Tournament.

1995 - Citing the labor unrest as the reason, former Chicago Bulls' great Michael Jordan announces he is leaving baseball to return to the NBA.

2002 - ESPN aired "A Season on the Brink." It was the first original motion picture by ESPN. The movie was about Bobby Knight.

2004 - Todd Bertuzzi (Vancouver Canucks) held a press conference to apologize for hitting Steve Moore (Colorado Avalanche) in the side of the head from behind and driving his head into the ice in a game on March 8. Moore landed face-first with Bertuzzi on top of him. Moore suffered a broken neck, a concussion and deep cuts on his face. On March 11, the NHL suspended Bertuzzi for the remainder of the regular season and the playoffs and announced that his eligibility would be assessed the following season and would take into account Moore's health and the progression of his recovery.
