I've tossed the idea around to many people and get some interesting/mixed opinions but my theory is as follows: mandate 2-weeks paid vacation and 2-weeks unpaid to all businesses regardless of size. By doing so you will reap the benefits of happier/healthier employees and likely that your business will actually generate more revenue considering 123.76 million full time U.S. employees will have additional time off to do what most people do when they aren't working... consuming. FACT: The U.S. is the only country that doesn't mandate paid paternity leave, sick leave and is the only developed nation / advanced economy that doesn't guarantee paid time off.

Why would you wana shorten paid vacation? 3 weeks is pretty common for paid time off

4 day work week would be better to mandate and result in more time off, study has already been done in europe

Id be fine with keeping 3-weeks paid but most jobs I've worked are 2-weeks for the first 3-5years

why should I be forced to take 2 weeks unpaid? What happens if I dont take my vacation time?

I get 27 days of PTO a year, and most years struggle to take it all.

1978-2000 long term average was 20.3days as of 2016 we are at 16.3days average...trending in the wrong direction

God I wish I had that much vacation pay...I guess let's put it this way...you get laid off tomorrow...how many PTO days will you have to start with come your next job ;)

Jay...I'm not asking your business to restructure your current PTO...just to ensure that ALL people get "at least" 2-weeks off and up to 4-weeks (2-unpaid) kind of like "sick" time but instead "family/life obligations/fishing" time

I forget the government doesn't like to enforce things that benefit the general public. No business owner is going to do it "just because" that's the point

Then they won't get much of an employee pool to pick from

Not to brag or anything, OK, I'm bragging...I took my first "real" job about 5 months ago (I had been self employed my whole life) and to sweeten the pot and entice me to say yes, I got 5 weeks PTO my first year. Nobody I tell that to believes me at first. I said yes, and up until I took that job, I had never had a paid day off in my life and my next birthday is the big five-oh. So I feel pretty fortunate.

I'd have to disagree with that statement, people take what they can get to survive...just landing a decent job is a feat for many of us

I know. But the best employees are going to find a job with better benefits. Leave the companies alone and let the market decide.

How are you going to get the employees today that do not take their vacation as it sits now?

The government is not the solution to any problem. Their only obligation to society is to provide for infrastructure and national defense. Anything outside that scope is not acceptable.

Family Leave needs to be incorporated into sick time and Vacation needs to be separate. It is to be used for when a child is sick or out of school, and you don't need to tap into your actual vacation hours to do it. I use 50% of my vacation time to stay at home with my kid who is out of school

I think it should be...

Years 1-5

Vacation Time = 2 Weeks
Family Leave = 1 Week
sick leave = 1 Week

Years 5-10

Vacation Time = 3 Weeks
Family Leave = 1 Week
sick leave = 1 Week

10+ Years

Vacation = 4 Weeks
Family Leave = 1 Week
sick leave = 2 Weeks

You mean they are not there to control everything we do, and how we do it?

I don't believe in mandates for such a thing. I think businesses can differentiate themselves by offering what they believe will be best for their operation and be attractive to potential employees. Make the businesses compete.

I always look at it this way....If I'm working lots of hours (over 50-60) and have little PTO that is fine....but I better be making nice money (six figures).

If I'm always working and the bank account looks average...I need to head somewhere else.

To hire and retain the best people, companies have had to be more flexible in how employees get their work done. The days of punching a clock and sitting at an assigned desk are over. Workers are demanding more work-life balance, which means telecommuting, flexible schedules, and things like that. I'd rather have a great employee working 32 hours a week than a bad one working 60.

I don't know about vacation, but when I was at UNL I usually had 80-100 hours of "use or lose" vacation at the end of the year. Our busy time was in the summer. So it wasn't uncommon for me to have nearly the entire month of December off each year. That was pretty freaking awesome.

When people have to work to earn something, they progress and so does our country.

When people are automatically given things, then stagnation occurs.

Do I think hard working people deserve paid vacation time? Hell yes. Should it be required? No. But employers need to take care of its employees. Treating them more poorly is not ok

Do I think there is money hungry employers who don't take care of their hard working employees? Yes and those companies should be exploited

However, if people want to live like socialist where everything is supposedly equal and the government tells people what to do, I have no problem with that. Just move to a country that's like that. If so, obviously you have issue with capitalism, so just move. That's simple. Canada is not too far and they are becoming socialist more and more every day. Or maybe try Cuba. I don't care. Just stop trying to make the US something it's not.

Nobody gets PTO? I must be the only one. Amazing.... In reality, many businesses give PTO. It probably isn't 'just because,' but more likely they're trying to attract the best in their industry with nice benefits.

Many people don't even use the little vacation time they get, because they're afraid of losing their jobs.

Two weeks of unpaid vacation will make employees happier, huh? Why not just make retirement at 30 mandatory? That way they can have 52 weeks of unpaid vacation?

That is an issue in many places. But why is it the governments role to try and fix it?
The Nebraska football team is struggling...why is it the AD's responsibility to fix it? Sorry Shawn I normally value your opinion but come on now...the AD has the power just like the government...think the players have any say in their coaching staff?

The AD is the football coaches boss. The government is not the public's boss or the boss of business owners. We don't work for them. That is a ridiculous analogy.

For some reason people think that the government is their mommy or daddy that is supposed to fix all their problems. I don't get it.

Seriously? The Framers of the Constitution would disagree.

What specifically do you disagree with? Is the government your boss or the boss of business owners? Or that I dislike most forms of government intervention in my life?

If I have worked hard to get where I was at, at a previous company (Use UP for an example here)... Let's say I worked there for 15 years and I got laid off. I am a very good employee, but did not fit their business needs. The only way your company is going to get me is if they match a lot of the benefits I was getting at UP.

You don't give me 4 weeks to start, you aren't getting me simple as that!
