They were never relevant. Before the playoffs, three bowls-at the most-had an impact on the MNC. The rest were exhibitions, as intended.

At the beginning of the bowl era you could use that.. By the the 1970’s they were no longer exhibition games when you consider national titles were determined who won the New Years day bowl games and then voted upon after them..

Say they were exhibition games is something they used when they started the Rose, Sugar, Orange and Cotton bowls..

Given that the College Football Playoff organization has a stake in who plays in its games, I wonder if the CFP could be that entity that holds a summit with the NCAA and conference commissioners to design an end game to all this realignment madness. The NCAA has already proposed a "Premier League" (for lack of a better phrase) in which all member institutions commit to paying every student-athlete a minimum of $30,000 per year. If that separates the wheat from the chaff, then let's properly set up conferences and a competitive regular season that makes rational and geographic sense, and set it it stone for at least a decade, maybe longer. It would make entry into the playoffs more logical.
