The rest of the season

Purdue is awful. Which means we should beat them soundly and going away. It is also our first road game which, strangely, should help us to focus. If we go there and win, but struggle to run the ball or stop the run, and if we keep committing penalties, then it will be a bad sign of things to come. This needs to be a feel good “beat down” game.

I still remember losing to an awful Northwestern team that did not have another win after beating us. And my point therefore is simple: play like shit against an awful Purdue team, especially on defense, and we might be looking at Rhule being a friendlier and more eloquent version of Scott Frost.
I’m done looking past any opponents. We do not just show up and win.

We have now suffered multiple years in a row of losing one score games. And in year two of Rhule we have just seen it happen again. At home. At night. With momentum.

Will this year now be different? Will the Illinois loss prove to be a wake up call and an anomaly as we go on to a 9-3 type season or will it be a harbinger of things to come?

In my opinion this next week will be one of the most important in the Rhule era so far. Can he avoid this season descending into the same mediocrity? Or can he right the ship?

I sure hope it is the latter because if we limp to another 5-7 season he will have a hard time overcoming the narrative that he is just one more failed Husker coach. And I for one just can’t stomach the thought of another “wait till next season” year.
I think the coaches will be talking this one over and looking at some changes, particularly scheme changes defensively and getting more production out of the running game. We get probably the weakest team in the Big 10 next outside of Northwestern, and then a bye week to get healed up and refocused.

exactly what I thought watching the UNI game. The game plans against us were written last week.
Yup, UNI created the blueprint. Friday's game reminded me of the 2001 Colorado game. The Nebraska D got sucked into so many misreads and were out of position.

If memory serves there were times last year where Tony White had us in a 4-3- alignment rather than a 3-5. If we have the bodies for it perhaps we can use the 4-3 more often.

We establish a run game by torching teams through the air. Teams still dont believe we can beat them throwing. They’re stacking the box. We have to force them to take their safeties out of run support. Our oline isn’t good enough to run vs a 8 man box. And our wr’s need to be better in run blocking.
I think our passing game is good enough to make any team respect it. Illinois couldn't stop it. Had the offense been given the ball more often we would have won comfortably.
The Illinois game may have indicated that the real strength of this team is the offense.

I would imagine that Mazzccua will be back staring next week. He served his time in the dog house.
Makes me wonder how Brix and Taumua are coming along as true freshman

Crossing over into Frost territory starting true freshman on the line. Who knows though maybe they can help out.

It did not remind me of a 30 point beating while we were #1 or 2 in the BCS. But yes they were out of position.

Hey if they can help out, then do it
Rhule is not going to burn redshirts unless there is a large difference between the younger guy and the next best. It’s smart. Build a program and don’t sacrifice the future for likely incremental improvement for the current team.

how about playing in 4 games and keep redshirt. That what be better yet

I think in some places that is fine. Offensive line? It could affect the cohesion of the group. As ridiculous as it sounds, playing the young guys now would affect any potential for our oline to grow and develop throughout the year. Now, if nothing changes by the end of October, sure play the young guys. Just be prepared for the potential it could hurt us during those games.

Newsflash:

5th/6th year guys like benhardt, Corcoran and Scott are who they are and they’re not getting any better

No one said we’re redshirting guys with physical limitations. News flash, just because they redshirt, doesn’t mean they’re the same players we’re used to redshirting.

I got Purdue, UCLA and Wisconsin as games we win. 6 wins. Possibly 1 more, but unless we establish an actual run game, which seems we can't without a QB run threat, I see us hitting 6 wins. Maybe we get to 7 with a bowl win.

Gonna beat the O Line sux drum again and again til I see it fixed. We do not look like a B1G O-Line.
Online has been a problem for years and years.

I don’t pretend to hold out hope that the pipeline is coming back under uncle donnie

But there’s no harm in seeing if there’s a gamer or two buried on the depth chart

I’m just about there, I got the impression that some of the older players aren’t putting in the work effort in practice, there is definitely something wrong with everyone the coaches and play calling and schemes to players just going through the motions especially on defense wtf happened after the Colorado game they are playing uninspired football except for several. All of a sudden we’re hands fighting and can’t get off the blocks the 3-3-5 isn’t fooling anyone I wonder if by rhule telling coach white to simply things is a issue or is this program just cursed
Punctuation?

I would move Rutgers to the win column , Indiana to the lost column and Wisconsin to a tossup.I think they will be 6-4 heading into the Wisconsin game.
Indiana looks good now but they haven't played anyone good yet either. Wisconsin has looked bad vs bad teams. Rutgers is decent this year.

There was a lot of rooting vs CU, but we all secretly cringed that they might continue owning NU with their NFL caliber skill players, as they did vs Baylor. When we soundly whomped them, it was a statement, and a good sign that the turnaround had finally, FINALLY arrived. Against UNI there were a lot of warning signs, yet just got chewed up in Hawaii. IL looked like a solid game, with their QB & D playing us well, but it ended in disaster, and even the media that was saying NU was back, quickly reversed course. It was a must win as many here have said, but that we lost, and so bad in errors and the OT collapse, its hard to believe cMR has really changed things. Suddenly, the schedule looks a lot worse. Many have posted here that UCLA as a win. Not so fast. They are struggling, but CA has a LOT of great HS players, and they are also in a hole they want to climb out of at our expense. Every game from here IS now daunting defining, and there are clearly cracks & weaknesses, & now injuries and mental errors to boot. Yeah, it was only one game, but one that said a lot about where we have been and how we may be stuck there. I will not blame the players, or the refs. Its always about coaching to me. They either fix this or we try again next year, and the the year after... Oh, its so exasperating.

This is my first Husker post....post our game. Stayed away cause i had a feelin there would be some crazy negative vibes.

..just going to say I think those of you predicting doom amd gloom for the rest of the season are wrong.
Every game we play our deficiencies are getting more and more exposed.

I think we still have a great shot at an 8+ win season

We just have to stop pussyfooting around and take some of the load off DR’s shoulders

Run the goddamn ball and he will make winning plays when we need them. The defense will magically look a lot better, too.

John C Reilly Yes GIF

Outside of OSU, NU could be in all games.

I think we also HAVE to tell Dylan that sometimes you need to stick with the run play called and not get greedy with audibles to pass plays.
