Thanksgiving food is crap. I've only ever had one good Thanksgiving meal and it was when I unexpectedly found myself in a situation where I had to go out to a restaurant for it. And that was mostly just a highly elevated version of it that barely even resembled a traditional Thanksgiving meal.

It’s quite easy to win Thanksgiving. Stuffing, mashed potatoes and gravy and Mac and cheese are the optimal sides. Replace turkey with smoked ham, ribs or brisket. Finish with any kind of pie/cobbler and ice cream. Nap and repeat on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

If you want a short-cut to great mashed potatoes, skip the butter, half-and-half, etc., and just use a jar of good garlic alfredo pasta sauce.

I also use Yukon gold potatoes, which are so much better than russets.

The best is .mashed potatoes and gravy when you mix your corn in with it. Then stuffing with gravy. Then anything else with gravy.

Stuffing. Homemade gravy and real mashed potatoes. Then a piece of strawberry rhubarb pie for dessert.

Wow. You have missed out. My in-laws do Thanksgiving GREAT! The food is fantastic. My wife has been taught by the best down home cooks. My mom could ruin hot chocolate when I was a kid but she always made a good Thanksgiving meal.

My mom would make mincemeat pie, dad and my brother would eat it. How many of you all had that?
My MIL made big batches of mincemeat and canned it.
My first Thanksgiving at inlaws house was the first time I'd ever had real mincemeat - made with meat and suet. It was also the last time I had mincemeat pie.
