Televised Spring Game Against Another Team?

If this actually happens, 10% chance at best, it’s will be against a lower level D1 team looking for a paycheck. This is nothing to be envious of, quite the opposite, even your coach just replaced your spring game with a dog and pony show…

I agree.

Let’s save our low level D1/FCS paycheck games for August/September.

Or not at all. But I don’t make the decisions and I don’t care that much as long as it works. Now if we lose a non-con game and don’t even compete for conference championship and/or a playoff spot. (status quo) Then I have a big fvcking problem.

It’s much like several of Rhule’s (admin’s) moves. You win, this all becomes the forgotten squabblings of a desperate fan base. Lose… and those squabblings become additional reasons you should be fired.

Seems like people hate it just cause it’s Colorado or Deion. I like the idea and I think it’s good for the sport. A spring game is meant for the fans and to get young players or walk ons a chance to get some recognition. This is good for all parties if it can actually be accomplished.

do you have any confidence in Rhule leading us to a conference title game?

100% believe we are on the path. And if he falls short the program will be in a spot where the next guy will need to make marginal changes to get us over the hump.

Playoffs first of course - if we are making the playoffs Rhule won’t be getting the axe.

Why would people want to see two teams play patty-cake that would make flag football seem physical? Because that's what something like this would be.
ONE player that matters get injured and the "this is awesome" crowd would be screaming "idiot coach needs to be fired".

I agree with this. Coaches are truly in a no win situation. But they make a lot of money to be in that position. So good luck coach

I am not one of those guys that use the potential injury rationale. Teams will be physical in intra squad scrimmages, you have a bunch of players competing for playing time. Injuries are going to happen, we have seen non contact injuries shelve a player for a season.

Now if you believe the poaching of players angle, why would you want another FBS coach in your facilities for 3 days? If you are a small FBS or an FCS team, why would you offer up what would equate to a tryout for the P4 team that is hosting you for 3 days?

The NFL does this but those players are under contract, if you cut them, then you don't want them and they are free to sign elsewhere. They can't opt out of their deal and go to another team a month after the "spring game". If the school and the player were contractually obligated for the following season, I think you would get widespread buy in.

How is this feasible from the Syracuse side? Is CU subsidizing a part of the expense? You bring the whole team right? 2/3 nights accommodations plus charter flights? Doesn’t seem realistic, just more of Deion yapping out loud, IMO.

I love it.

Personally I think canceling the spring game is the dumbest idea Rhule / AD have had since coming here and that includes Satt as OC.

I am not a Deion fan, but he understands in the NIL era you need eyeballs. Eyeballs = money = players.

In a time where marketing has never been more important, with a state that thrives on supporting its football team… And loyalty is this school’s brand… Why you’d cancel the spring game, eliminating the chance to showcase that, is beyond me.

I actually like the idea of practicing with and playing against another school. I think Syracuse would be all for it, until their top RB decides playing from Marshall Faulk or their to DL thinks playing for Warren Sapp would be better for them. Again if the players were locked in with their current school for the upcoming season and couldn't decide 10 days after this practice and scrimmage that they were leaving, then it would be all the rage.

ESPN is paying to air it, so there’s part or all of the expense right there

No offense, but the football program has been bad to mediocre for 10 years and the fans still come to "sellout" the stadium every week.

Colorado isn't going to get anymore NIL money because they played a scrimmage in April. He is going to get players because of his name, and he hires coaches that have a name, as players.

There is still a showcase that will be going on, it will just be different. Kids will still be able to see their favorite players on the field doing some sort of football. You will still be able to take your 1997 National Championship t-shirt and have it signed by 18-22 year olds, so you can proudly display it in you mancave.

No offense taken. That’s exactly my point. We’ve sucked for a decade plus. And fans still show up. 60k showing up for the spring game is a recruiting tool and a marketing tool.

You think people will still show for a skills comp? Personally I don’t think more than 25k will show. Why would you for a lame skills competition.

All I'm saying is by taking away the spring game you are taking away one of the few things that still makes Nebraska different - supporting the program even when we have been historically bad.

And idk if that was supposed to be a dig but I’m 32 and hardly remember the 97 team. My first vivid Husker memories were Crouch and Newcombe.

At least somebody has the “balls” to play their spring game, and against another opponent 💪
Bullcrap. He knows it isn't going to happen, so he's just setting himself up to say, "we wanted to." I actually do think Deion has balls and usually backs up what he says. This isn't one of those times. Now, if the shot-callers (SEC and B1G) decide there is a way to make big money off of the concept, it probably will happen soon.

It wasn't a dig, it was an impersonal you, meaning people in general.

I just think too much is made of not having a spring game. I don't know if it is that much of a recruiting tool anymore. Nebraska has had 60,000 plus at their spring game for the past decade, has that helped the recruiting all that much? Marketing is just selling the product. If the program is dependent on a monetarily successful spring game, and this event doesn't cut it, then they will either try to market it better next year or change it. Personally, I think it is a fun thing to attend, I have been a couple of times myself, but I am not sure that it attracts people that aren't already fans. About the only thing it does, as far as attendance is concerned, is that it may allow for people to see a "game" that may not normally get to see one because it will be considerably cheaper than a regular season home game.

Has finances at CU improved enough to pay for another program to come do this?? I've no idea, its a legit ? Can't imagine a school like Syracuse paying its own way...would they? But offer em something and I could see the attraction from their side.

Agree with this 100%

I don't have the rule book in front of me, but I am not sure if there is a rule prohibiting it or coaches just didn't want to do it. I know that baseball and softball have fall seasons where they play against opponents, mostly smaller local schools, basketball is allowed to travel overseas to play in the summer, with some restrictions on the number of years it can be done.

In theory, I love the idea of two teams scrimmaging for a couple practices followed by a game.

In practice, I can’t see it happening with the transfer portal opening just afterwards.
