While I don't think much of Katy Perry as a person, I thought her halftime show was fabulous.
On back-to-back nights, I took my daughter to a Katy Perry concert and then my wife to a Tom Petty concert (at Red Rocks). Two totally different events. Tom Petty and the Heartbrakers were musicians, and Katy Perry was putting on a show.
Ten years ago I'd take care of busy work (work emails, etc.) at my local SoCal library Sunday afternoon 12-4 pm. There were always four kids waiting at the door when it opened so they could get their favorite table. Girl around 14, girl 12, boy 10, girl 9. Their parents were from Vietnam and I perceived the 14, 10 and 9 year olds were siblings and the girl 12 was a friend. They sat there for four hours and studied silently. Once in awhile the boy would get fidgety, but the oldest girl would shut him down. When the library closed there was always drama between the librarian and oldest girl who drug her feet on packing up and leaving.
It always occurred to me none of these kids would get capped or cap someone several hours later for being "disrespected" because they would be in bed. They didn't dwell on racism against them, if there was any, because probably the only overt racism these kids would experience was getting turned down for University of California schools because there are too many Asians enrolled. They didn't dwell on being "victims" because they were too busy taking advantage of the opportunities their parents gave them by floating in a boat for weeks and living in squalor in a Thai refugee came for months. They didn't aspire to develop a separate English dialect most people in the country can't understand, even with closed captioning enabled; they were striving to become proficient in mainstream, educated English as one of the gateways to success in this country.
I expect by now the (then) 14 year old is in med school. The 12 year old is finishing her computer science degree, the boy is studying something related to AI at Cal Tech, and the 9 year old is not in college, she has expanded her parents noodle restaurant into a franchise with 11 stores now. And I'd bet dollars to dog turds not one of them had 5 hours to kill to watch a marginal football game with a bunch of uninspiring commercials and an angry halftime show.
I've seen Petty a couple times - great shows. Did you enjoy Katy's show? Did she sing her I Kissed a Girl song?
Maybe next time they can hand out decoder rings before it starts so people “get it” and appreciate it in the moment.
There is literally no one who put all that context (you mentioned earlier in the thread) together during the performance itself.
This was a show that was rehearsed multiple times I would have to think the only ones that could get the deeper meanings would have had access to or had things layed out for them. Definitely went over my head ...except Not Like Us. That one I got including Serena. The rest might as well of been in Sanskrit

I still harbor some hate for the disco period.
It seemed like one weekend I was going out to bars and hearing great local or regional bands and the next weekend no more live bands... every bar had a DJ.
There were a lot of props and effects. There was a lot of interaction with the audience. Speaking of the audience, it was almost entirely female. In particular, girls from 7-15. It was at the Denver Nuggets arena, and they converted all the men’s restrooms into women’s. Except for one on the first level, and one on the second. Better not go left instead of right if it’s a hurry.
As for the show itself, I noticed that she didn’t always play the whole song. Just part of the song, and then went on to the next stage effect. It wasn’t about the music, the music was more just background for the show. But it was a show.
I kinda like The Bee Gees...but trading floyd, carpenters, stones, bread, skynard, eagles, and zep...for disco duck seemed wrong

Certain groups of people are race baiting morons. They have nothing else. So, they just say everything is racist. White men are Nazi's and white supremacists. They've taken the shock value out of the word. Nobody cares or listens to these ****tards anymore. They are a sad pathetic bunch.
Yeah, the NFL isn't concerned about getting older white men demographic. They know that this kind of show isn't going to be popular with the Statler and Waldorf crowd. (Muppets in theater balcony)
The last half dozen shows have had a very specific...how shall I put this....style....i'm betting next years will be different.
I read online, I mean I have a brother-in-law who is an executive with the NFL tell me that Jay-Z has been responsible for picking the halftime performers for the Super Bowl for the last 6 years or so.
I've liked a few of them and the one with M&M was freaking awesome...and I ihate that guy....but it just feels like they've gone overboard on a certain style, and it also feels like the winds are a changin in a few areas which makes me wonder if we have a show that will appeal to more people next year. I'll watch regardless, I watch every Chiefs game, I just hope i'm more entertained.
