In Your Head
I like to think I’m pretty open-minded when it comes to appreciating music from all different types of genres, etc. But I thought last nights performance was mind-numbingly substandard, but then again I dozed off after a bit so maybe I missed out on something incredible.

I suppose I’m just an old man yelling at a cloud.

Having Serena Williams, Drakes ex dancing on stage during the Drake diss song was kinda funny. Other than that a pretty boring halftime performance

That wasn’t actually Serena was it? I thought she looked like her?

The “Not like us” was all I got into because I like that song. I thought the choreography was solid given the size of the group.

Midway through I did acknowledge that I was getting too old as I grasped to understand a single word or understand the concept/purpose of Samuel L. Jackson with the production.

...in all seriousness, WTF was with Samuel yelling shit like "To ghetto...." while acting like he was speaking for the United States? He literally trashed every song on behalf of the country? Did I see that right?

I thought it was bad. I don't listen to rap so I can't judge if that was good or not really.

It doesn't matter who you put out there if the fans don't like that type of music many will think it was terrible and many will love it.

The song about turning off the TV was appropriate I thought. RollingLaugh

cannot stand rap but about 3ish years ago when snoop and company did the halftime show....it was one of the best i ever saw...so whilei think there is a lot of merit to your line about not liking a certain kind of music so people will hate the show itself.....i also think for a halftime show people are pretty open to different styles...just entertain us and be good. that was total shit last nite

Agree, it seemed like a really bad performance.

Yeah. That's a few minutes of my life I'd like to have back.

There were a LOT of people coming out of that car!

I'm enjoying reading about all the symbolism in last night's performance, which I totally missed watching it live. I'm just slow in that regard. Well, maybe other regards as well... 😂

I knew I was not the target audience for the halftime show, but I made sure I watched it. I was not familiar with any songs, other than Not Like Us that I YouTubed the day before. One hurdle to liking the show is that I can’t make out the words he is saying. Need subtitles. But other than that, I thought the show was visually appealing and well choreographed. I figured it would get good reviews in general. And it has, just not on this board.

Hip hop and live performances never mixed. I don't relate to their lyrics, either.

Hip hop is exposed when performed live. Ultimately, musically, it’s just 2 people, the DJ and the rapper or “vocalist”. You need crazy theatrics to make a live hip hop performance entertaining. Plus…

Kendrick Lamar is mumble rap. Mumble rap in an abomination and should be thrown on the musical scrap heap for the rest of time. I like hip hop, but mumble rap is probably the worst form of “musical entertainment” known to man.

The car was definitely the highlight

Yeah, it was definitely a performance tailored to the young and hip hop community only. No real crossover appeal like most artists of the past. I like Kendrick but it was a bad choice considering the broad NFL audience. He is one of the best of the genre, but very few radio hits that everyone can recognize. The Drake diss track was the star of the show. Funny, but not enough to get the halftime lead. I fully expect the NFL to course correct and go back to a rock and roll band. Maybe even as far as a Metallica, which would be an epic halftime show.

It was complete trash and terrible, so-called music. I do like some rap, but younger generations don't even know what good music is. They play that crap and don't think someone like Metallica would connect with a broader audience? BS.

Looking at your list I can kinda remember parts or most of all those performances. I must have watched all of them. Going through that mental inventory it became clear that last night’s performance was easily the worst in the last 15-20 years. Katy Perry’s retarded shark was even better…

I doubt subtitles could keep up or even help in terms of it making any sense.

I had to go here (https://genius.com/Kendrick-lamar-not-like-us-lyrics) to help me understand what the lyrics even mean, haha!

Kendrick Lamar has always made music for pseudo-intellectuals who think they're revolutionaries.

People can say what they want on his feud with Drake, but Drake's "you always rappin' like you bout to get the slaves freed" line was spot on.

This is what was posted about the show.

The biggest protest in Super Bowl history happened on the Stage tonight and folk screaming it's boring or trash because it went over their head! This what you didn't see.
.
Then again the message is Blacks have always been here to entertain THEY (Who are not like us) so they aren't bored.
.
They rather have Wayne up there high, who has backed Drake (The system) to push the agenda.
.
The messages Kendrick just sent to America could not use Wayne.

It even started with the American Flag being built out of black people as America being built on the backs of black people.
.
Before I mention how being cool in our culture has always been stolen, no matter how many people try to steal it, they not like us.
.
WAS NOT ABOUT WHITE PEOPLE.. IT WAS ABOUT THE PEOPLE WHO CONTROL THE MEDIA AND LABELS WHO CREATE DIVIDE. OK HERE GOES!
.
It started with Dead Pres intro beat and flow "Bigger than Hiphop" I'll put the video in comments.
.
First song: WHEN I HEAR MUSIC, IT MAKES ME DANCE (SQUABBLE UP). Puppet Strings of music making us dance vs pay attention.
.
Uncle (Sam)uel L Jackson started it off with the rules of the game of historical White America America.
.
Then Said when a bunch of blacks hanging out on the corner is too deep for the culture. Somebody gotta die. Deduct a life and create an environment to cancel each other out
.
The Squid games start which symbolizes the rich killing the poor for entertainment. Hmm. Imagine rappers beefing and killing and the media benefitting from their deaths.
.
The system allows Drake to push the Sexxxy Redd to taint the culture and empowers him
.
The dancers in Red White & Blue representing the American flag. Been Dancing to the drums of the system. And we want entertainment and to be able to dance than be educated.
.
The main Stage was a Playstation. Squid Game card 🔻🟥🔴️ and the system is a game designed to keep us dancing and imprisoned which is why it was in a prison yard.
.
Protecting black women like Serena Williams after the disrespect from Drake
.
Notice he brought out SZA as a black woman and she did not have to be half naked on display for the world letting her voice shine?
.
And once again reminding the system of Drake and America "They (Plants) are Not Like Us" and can't infiltrate the culture.
.
Game Over.. TV OFF. Been under their control. Revolution.
.
Drake Been used to further sour the system and be a plant for the same system Malcolm X warned about from the music execs who own media and use it to divide us.
.
This is bigger than rap! And women who feel disrespected should see it.

People who are tired of being divided should see it. Notice the American flag divided?
.
But most of all, those who didn't have a lens to see it just shows the system has worked and you're the type it's been working on.
.
Dude is the most creative genius in hiphop history.
.
But go off. Maybe we can see more well respected entrepreeurs and family men leading for once.
.
Here is the kicker: Look at your fb friends who say they wish it was more entertaining. Yeah, they were who it's been working on. The system rather keep you choosing entertainment over being educated
.
Watch the first 10 secs of his rap. Dead Pres reference Bigger Than Hiphop. True Art!

.
Because if you keep praising the entertainers who promote killing each other and degrading our women. I guess America will think it's OK too.
.
Watch the comments fill up with "Nothing will change" from people who are ok waiting for it to change vs doing their part.
.
The point he was making was... Come to this post in 24 hours and watch how many of us are fighting the message and messenger vs thinking of positive growth to move forward
.
You don't expect shucking and jiving and twerking from an artist who was the only rapper ever to win a Pulitzer Prize. You appreciate ART. And Art is sometimes boring but changes cultures.

Them: We watch Super Bowl to be entertained
.
Well it's 2025. The Super Bowl performance goes on Youtube and we can talk about it for weeks and hopefully lead to Unity and Change.

Just feel the Super Bowl Halftime show should be more about entertainment than subtle messages about society
This 100%
The show should be a celebration of the game, the teams and the fans. Not a place to beef or make a profound political/social statement. I enjoy all music genres - but when you try to push an agenda (even ones I might agree with), find a different venue for it please.

Great breakdown, very similar to what I have read. Had to be looking for the symbolism as most have no idea and don’t want to…
