The final paragraph of his write up:
I can’t quite put my finger on it, but Riley and his staff seem caught by surprise, like a quarterback who’s surprised by the speed of the game, or a sprinter who thought he had half an hour to warm up for his race, but just found out he needs to be in the starting blocks in two minutes. Their counterparts are usually a step or two ahead. I expected a less painful learning curve from this veteran staff. It’s not an encouraging sight, but whether this means the Nebraska coaching staff is in over their heads, or simply that it will take them a season to get up to speed in the Big Ten, cannot be accurately answered now.

We need talent. We have some but you can tell that the cupboard is kind bare

Nebraska has 23 former walkons on scholorship, your cupboard is kinda bare. Your coach is doing the best he can with the hand he has been dealt.
We got beat by a team whose best back was a walk-on and their other back who scored the TD was playing linebacker a few weeks ago. Plus their offensive line is a walking mash unit and even their defense has lost a few starters to injury. It happens.

P.S. Our talent was good enough to have very, very late fourth quarter leads or ties this year. The one close game we pulled out...South Eastern Alabama State.

So far, talent is pretty much even with who Nebraska has played, with the exception of Miami being the team that I thought had better players. Going down the rest of this years schedule, really Michigan State is the only team that seems to have the better over all personnel than Nebraska. I don't believe for one minute that Rutgers or Purdue has better talent than the Huskers, the rest might be no better than even with Nebraska.

Injuries certainly are a nemesis so far, but every team has them. Nebraska just doesn't play sound enough to win these close ones yet, and this week against Minnesota more than likely will be a lopsided loss. Four out of the next six teams just seem to be playing and coached better.

That is exactly right. I have been saying the last few games that Riley seems overwhelmed out of his element. I think he is starting to realize this isn't easy going Oregon St. and that he bit off more than he realized. Nebraska is a different ball game all the way around.

To those still using the excuse, we don't have talent. I agree we are a bit bare, but we didn't graduate that many start amazing play makers last year (abdulla) to go from a 9 win team to a 2 win team. That is 100% on the coaches. Again good coaches work with what they got and make it work. Billy C round 2 people. You really want another 5 years of this?

If this staff fails it won't be a 5year deal. In fact if this staff misses back to back bowl games there will have to be a change.... That said I'm getting ahead of myself because a few new recruits could change our record in a hurry.
TA is not the QB for Riley's offense and as much as we hate it or hear about it he deserve more then a year to fix it and get his own players in place. I hate hearing this too but he is playing with Pelini players and they are our players.

No but u can't fire a coaching staff after one year. We are not Nebraska of old. For awhile we are going to have to sit back as casual observers and watch the game and then move on. All of the constant bitching is doing more harm then good.

Regardless of his record, Riley must be given a minimum of 4 years.

Really? Where does it say that in his contract? I agree that he probably gets 3-4 years, because apparently this the "new normal" in Lincoln but two years in a row where we end up less than .500, and you could see Bike Smiley get his walking papers. I like the post I read earlier where someone said we ought to all sit back and not get so stressed out because we are NOT the Huskers of old and this is just the way it's going to be for some time.

It's probably going to take a recruiting class or two to get back to being competitive. I'd expect the same kind of results next year, unfortunately. That sucks cause who likes to wait and no one is patient. But year three is probably when we can make real evaluations, IMO. Is what it is. We might not sniff a bowl season, let alone a winning season, for a couple of years. But that's the price you pay when you change coahes.

I hate to say it but this is not the "new" normal, this has been happening for a while now, we just are not the Nebraska that was always playing for national titles we have not been relevant in the national scene for some time now, it is painful to see and even more painful to say, however if we ever want to see us get back there we need to start becoming a more honest fan base, realize we will not be pulling any A lister coaches if we keep running through them... undefeated seasons every year are just unrealistic for right now... I want Nebraska to be more competitive just like everyone else does but this whole Bo would have at least won us our 9 games is irrelevant as we honestly have no clue what he would have done because he isn't here any more... We have some talent on our team but the talent doesn't fit the system and at some point our coaches need to find the happy medium of their system and our players talent levels, that is where we are having issues... We need to cool our jets as a fan base and either ride or die with whoever is leading it, if the ship isn't righted in a few years we try again until you find your diamond in the rough because that's all we will be able to pull right now....

People asking if a guy that has coached professional football is in over his head. Pure stupidity, you can't make this stuff up....

So Bill Callahan was not in over his head here? Lane Kiffin was not in over his head at Tennessee and USC? Riley failed miserably in the NFL.

Fellas, talent isn't the reason they're losing close games. I'll buy the 'bad luck' argument before that. Nebraska is thin at DE and LB, but it's not like teams are scoring 60+ points a game on the defense.

Agreed it's depth at DE,LBer and offensive line and a QB that isn't quite fit for a WCO offense.

Its coaching and talent. I would say coaching is the bigger factor. The players were already here the system was brought in. It is not a very good blending of the 2. Whos fault is that?

if we were in the big 12, they would be.

Wonder if they'll look to see if one of the other qbs can go through their progressions and not have happy feet.

Was Bill Walsh in over his head at Stanford? Another spectacular well thought out post.

I agree. I understand Nebraska will not always be 90s type teams. I understand teams go through up and down swings. My thinking is this, we have been in a down swing for almost 20 years. To this point in the year we are heading into a down swing even worse. Riley does not have a history of consistent top 25 teams. His overall record is slightly above .500. I am an odds/ numbers guy. Based off of his history and his start here. Odds are he will not turn this around.
So after tumbling downward for almost 20 years do we really want to wait another 3-5 years for Riley to fail. Then wait another 3-5 years for the new coach to come in and try and rebuild. We could end this 1 year in and save ourselves 3-5 years. Now I am not say to get rid of Riley for sure, but if he loses out we really need to consider it.
