IMO we’re undersized at linebacker and safety. Nash playing 30 lbs lighter might make him a little quicker and give him more stamina But he’s not stuffing the run as well as he did last year. Our edge guys are too light against teams like Illinois and probably Iowa.
Yep, I think Nash should have kept the weight on. 30 pounds is like 10% of his weight, That was a bad move.

I don't want to burst some of your bubbles but a lot of you seem to think that schools are all doing different things in the weight room. They are not. They pretty much all do the same exact things. As someone who has sat through a dozen or more SC presentations, it is all pretty much the same shit.

The only thing I ever saw that was kind of wild was a few years ago the Louisville SC coach had his players lift in full pads to "better simulate game like movements" .
I really don’t think S&C was the difference against Illinois. We were down to the guy who was our 3rd string sophomore left tackle in Gottula and 2nd string right guard in Lutovsky. THAT was a big problem. Add in that our sophomore edge guys aren’t big enough and made LOTS of mistakes and you get what we got. We had that game won IF Raiola completed that pass OR we make the kick. Yeah it wasn’t pretty but we SHOULD have won that game😕. Very frustrating.

All that is true, yet, when I think back to this defense declaring it wanted to be the best defense in the COUNTRY,? If it weren't so sad, it would be laughable.

the stupid penalties on experienced guys were inexcusable. I don’t know what we do there. Our safeties were confused at times and we sorely missed Hill. We’re going to see the same stuff against Wisconsin, Minnesota and Iowa not to mention OSU. Iowa destroyed Minnesota last night with the run game.

A disciplined play caller who knows his team is very valuable

iowa went down early and they stuck to their identity

Eh. I don't see deficiencies in S+C if anything it's coaching. I don't see it there yet either, we've pulled our starters midway thru the 3rd in every game except Iliinois and Colorado where we were up 28-0 at half.

Went to the legacy walk. Came away thinking as a team we looked small

Friday night NU got its ass handed to it physically. It won't be the last time this year that happens.

When both your OL and DL are getting physically whipped at the LOS, it might be a strength and size issue.

Ha, right?

I mean, sometimes it is just easy to tell who has no clue what they are talking about.

Then you add in this weird idea that if you just "workout more" you get bigger, which is not true at all, it is why CC runners are ****ing skinny as shit. Your body needs to get stressed and recover and your muscles are made in in the kitchen.

But the SC coach at Bama and Illinois and Iowa are all doing the same shit as they are at NU.

Now, back in the day, NU was the only school that lifted, that was different, back then coaches thought lifting would make you slow and stiff. Plus the Skers LOVED roids.

I hear BS here at the HS level ALL THE TIME. If used to be that Papio kids had a secret underground weight room...then it was that Millard North kids were all taking steroids. I have worked out in gyms for 30 years and never even seen a steroid, but everyone at Millard North was taking them!!!

When half your team is WRs and DBs you’re going to look small.
VERY TRUE. I haven't seen our players up close for years. I was surprised at some of the small ankles on fidone. Not sure what that means but just an observation.

The thing I came away from the legacy walk was there was ZERO emotion with the players. Call it focus or whatever but it seemed like they would rather be dropped off at a back door rather than walk amongst cheer leaders band and a bunch of adoring fans. Just my opinion

Maybe Illinois knocked some of the cockiness out of them.

I told my brother-in-law right away when they came out during the tunnel walk "they're flat". Sure started that way. I'll tell you what though, I was a little flat too with the heat. Damn that was brutal that day.

I tried to tell people that last week. I was concerned with how UNI pushed us around at times.
I thought this same thing. Tbh, I thought UNI had the better OL that night.
Everyone knows the formula to beat Nebraska. Keep smacking them in the mouth and they'll fold eventually. Our team thinks they did plenty of work in the offseason.. Well, everyone else still did more than you.
Let me know when we have a legit B10 OL (and coach), kicker and punter.. until then, losing games like this will still be the norm.

I asked this earlier.. but what was the nickname the defense gave themselves?

We should have won the game. We were down basically to the guy who was our 3rd string left tackle coming out of the spring and our 2nd string right guard. They didn't get it done. We have a legit P5 B10 O line coach and legit players. Gottula is very young. I've never been impressed by Lutovsky but not many teams can dig in to their depth chart on the O line without a drop off. That said, our freshman QB missed a wide open TE for the win.... Our backup kicker hooked a 39 yard field goal a foot or two outside the post. Nevermind the missed no calls on obvious penalties on a punt return and in OT out of bounds. We had that game :(

The whole vibe that day was weird. I know I talked to some people on Saturday in Lincoln and they said it just didn't feel normal. They blamed it on Friday since many people were at other events which I can understand. It just felt off to me

What NU was doing under Boyd Epley and now is not even in the same universe. Lifting weights and taking steroids isn't comparable to modern day lifts and technology gained over the years.

Just the difference in nutrition, diet and recovery from 40 years ago is akin to comparing a tricycle to a dragster.

Some on here believe NU just called the dogs off at halftime of the early games, and I think its more a matter of not being able to pound teams for 60 minutes.

If ever there was a time for this team to rise up and keep scoring it was in the 2nd half Friday night. Yet, this team fell flat, and it wasn't because of lack of desire to keep scoring.

The games against UTEP and CU showed NU could muscle a couple of finesse teams. When it comes to matching up physically in their OLines, with teams like UNI and ILL, NU got its ass kicked physically.

There will be more ass kicking this year as things now stand.
I think the fact that there was rampant steroid use was a bigger factor than any changes to technique or technology. If you go back to the major hitting era in baseball where steroid use was rampant, you can see that steroids not only help with strength and speed, but reaction time and possibly athletic intelligence as well. Is it any coincidence that Clemson started dropping off the very next year after they had players caught juicing? Is it a coincidence that home runs dropped off a cliff in MLB baseball after the crackdown on PED's? I think not.

I effing hate self-proclamations like that. If it's true, prove it on the field. And there will be no shortage of prognosticators talking about it if that's what you want.

Did you just suggest steroids helps with athletic intelligence

Did you just suggest steroids helps with athletic intelligence
Yes I did. With the belief that athletic intelligence is strongly correlated with general athletic ability. And steroid use certainly helps with being a better athlete.

FIxed it for you, since that is what your implying..

We have recently had more than a normal number of injuries. Something is wrong with S&C. Stretching, taping, flexibility?? Something is wrong.

I honestly don’t believe it’s more than normal. It’s a physical game. People are going to get injured. Plantar fasciitis happens to Joe Sixpack. Hammie pulls happen all the time

The recovery therapies at unl are incredible. Players have red light therapy beds, shockwave, etc in addition to the normal pt, chiro, cold tubs, massage etc. I think they'll be back soon.

I rewatched parts of the UNI and Illinois game. What I saw most often was that NU was actually fine up front but the safeties and linebackers were very slow to react. Even remaining stationary for a second as if they weren't sure what to do. The worst example is on the OT run by Illinois where we had two free defenders who never reacted to the ballcarrier until he was past the line of scrimmage and then missed the tackle.
Something tells me they are getting overschemed and are not able to just play.

Like I've said many times, our guys move backwards when we tackle. Instead of 2nd and 9, it's 2nd and 6. Instead of 3rd and 5, it's 3rd and 1.

I think our players (on defense) got shaken, to some degree, once they realized their DC was getting owned by that fat slob. They were put in unexpected situations more than they were used to, and when that happens players start thinking too much and not executing/reacting instinctively. All of a sudden your defense looks soft, slow and on its heals. Like they said, they got punched in the mouth, (realized TW wasn’t putting them in the best position to win) and they didn’t/couldn’t respond.
