Staff speculation

One of the few positives about HCMR when he was hired was his experience. So far, he has fired an assistant per year and by reading this post - there are or should be more to come. Does this seem like a lot of misses for a veteran coach? I'm not sure as I do not follow the transitions of most major coaches.

I have been thinking this too but refrained from posting since I have no real knowledge of what is going on behind closed doors. But one of the disappointing things about Riley is that we were told he was this savvy veteran coach who did not need a learning curve to get up to speed. And yet, it does seem, at least superficially and from the "outside", that he is only now figuring out that he can't coach at Nebraska the same way he did at OSU.
And perhaps coach Cav is a case in point. Maybe he got into the habit of only playing five guys on the line at OSU because he had zero depth there. So he made a virtue out of a necessity and developed "his way" of doing things. But it really is a crappy way of building depth. I know, I know, keeping guys redshirted IS a way of building depth. But at some point you do need to bite the bullet and play your best players now rather than later. We had a real shot at winning the West THIS year. And yet I got the impression all year that Riley's staff was more concerned about years 3 and 4 than in actually having a special season this year.

This years recruiting isnt finished.

You mean like the 3 all Americans, and 23 all conference OL at Oregon state. Which is really impressive when you look at recruiting rankings.

I don't have much dog in this fight, but when someone lists honorable-mention all-conference players on his resume, that probably says something in itself.

The question was good college OL? Id say honorable mention is a good college OL. With out HM he had 10 all conference OL in that time.

Like I said, not much dog in the fight, and probably shouldn't have replied to your specific post, other than it had the 23 number in it. It just always annoyed me that HM players were listed as "all-conference", and when they are, people get an unrealistic view.

The 10 all conference OL is a good number to use.

I think Reggie Davis would be my next coach on the chopping block. Our RBs don't really seem to be growing. I'm also still a bit bitter that Riley didn't keep Ron Brown, that dude knew how to get the most out of his RBs!
I would respectfully disagree... the difference for Newby between the last three years and this year was night and day... and I think the difference must have been coaching.

This. I think Davis is a good position coach. And the running backs are asked to do a lot in Langsdorf's system. If we had had a real QB who could hit open receivers, teams would not have been able to cheat both safeties up in run support and our backs would have looked much better in the running game.
I just wonder if Davis is a good recruiter. Time will tell

My one concern with Davis when he was hired, the guy has like 3 sets of twins and like a single in there, a guy with half a dozen kids or something, I mean, that's going to tie up a bit of your time unless you are really committed to just donating half your paycheck into letting someone else raise your family.

I like Coach Davis as a coach, but I certainly think there are better choices available for 300K+ if you wanted to get another ace recruiter in here.

I would like to see how this Verdell thing goes. I think if Davis can go into Oregon and steal a recruit, when they seem to be having easy pickings of anyone we offer at this point and time, it'll give me more confidence that he can be our guy.

Having said that, between Devaney, the non-coaching recruiting gurus on staff, and Davis, our RB strategy is really strange. We can say what we want about Davis scrambling to find his guy, but Davis isn't on an island here. Someone besides him had to sign off on going after the two top national guys as flips, and then our fallback option is basically a couple of Oregon targets (a commit and a heavy lean). In any given year, those guys would all be long shots and we could easily miss on all of them.

The recruiting staff as a whole must be seeing something differently than we are, in addition to any concerns we might have about Davis. I half wonder if Graham Roberts (Avery's younger bro) is basically considered "in the bag" for next year's RB, and if that plays into this at all.

I agree. I find our entire strategy this year for recruiting running backs to be strange

IDK I haven't been real impressed with Newby. It seems the only time he can get anything going is the 4th quarter when defenses are tired. Meanwhile, Ron Brown took mediocre recruits (Helu, Burkhead, Abdullah) and turned them all into NFL backs.

I think Burkhead was our highest rated recruit in that class. Helu and Abdullah were certainly 3* success stories.

However that seems to be a general trend here at NU, the Leon Jackson's and Braylon Heards and Aaron Greens and Marlon Lucky's of the world, end up being nothing or mundane, and a guy who was supposed to play corner for an SEC team ends up being a Heisman caliber back.

This is generally why I don't panic much over RB stars. Especially in an era now, where the RB is not the focal point of the O.

The RB situation feels like the whole story isn't out. Like a recruit they thought was in didn't pan out and the back ups had already taken new homes. This screams of the staff getting burned by a silent commit again like Fitz.
