Just wondering if anyone has figured out much of what the other rumored staff change *might* be.

I think a lot of folks would like to find a replacement for Davis, but I'm not terribly sure we see a whole ton of smoke there. (Certainly with Hughes and Read, there was a fair bit of advance warning).

Does anyone think Stewart moves on? Or what are folks' strange theories on stuff?

I have no inside info at all, just a guess. And my guess is, given our recent hire, that Stewart will be ousted. I would personally like to see Cav move on as well.

Ousted as in fired?

Most of the rumor with Stewart is he'll be a DC again, perhaps as early as this off season. I saw DW as preventative, more than anything.

Ousted was a poor choice of words. He will move on is my view.
And if Cav finishes strong in recruiting my view of him would change. But right now I am not sold on his ability to recruit.

I'm not going to shed any tears if Davis, Stewart, Cav, or Parrella leave. I think we can get better coaches in here to teach & recruit those positions. All those guys suck IMO.

I like Stewart. But I do think he will move on. I agree with you about Davis and Cav. I think the verdict is still out on Parella and I think he has the potential to be a very good coach. But time will tell.

Wouldn't be surprised to see Stewart resign to take on a co-DC position or another NFL gig. He's worked with Edsall who's going to UConn now and has too many other contacts to mention. I figure he has had something lined up, but has agreed to stay on until after signing day.

Why? It's not like he has may commits to hold onto.

I figured the change was strictly duties, Stewart - safeties, DWilliams - CB's, Banker back to DC with no position coaching, and special teams a group responsibility.

So I'm not expecting any type of announcement, but who knows.

Riley has shown that he will cull the herd. But to agree with Dingle, some of you are nuts. "All of these guys (Davis, Cav, Stewart, Parella) suck". Cav can't recruit? Boe Wilson was close to burning a RS and people really like Farniok and Raridon. Cav was the lead recruiter for these guys.
Maybe a guy like Davis would be better off coaching another position, as he coached TEs and the Oline for the 49rs under Harbaugh. But he coached RBs at Oregon State. But then again, Davis has coached in the NFL as well as college. I'd say he knows what he's doing.

I stand by my doubts concerning coach Cav. I will grant that he did a good job landing Farniok. But I am not so certain he was all that instrumental in getting Wilson and Raridon here. I remember there was a debate about just this issue a few weeks ago in a different thread. But I might be remembering it incorrectly.

Clearly there were issues with Hughes and Read and they were released. Cav has a really long history with Riley. Doubt very much he is going anywhere as long as he produces.

Of course Cav stays where he is if he produces. But that begs the question. What happens if he does not produce? Riley has shown he will not hesitate to show his old coaching friends the door.
Where you and I differ is on whether or not Cav is producing. I am on the fence. You think he is doing well.

yep, it's just an opinion.. we haven't had a good offensive or defensive line in the two years Riley has been here. While I do think cueball can recruit, I'm not so sure he can coach worth a darn.. then you got the cb coach no one knows, and Banker has to take over some of his duties this year, so I'm not sure how anyone sees that as a positive. Big John was a great player, but I'm not sure he's a great coach.. maybe I'm being too hard on him, but maybe we should have established position coaches. It's cool if others have a different opinion, it's not the end of the world.

Did we not all watch the same season? The oline was a mash unit most of the year, we played 3 walkons for the last what 3 or 4 games. That's not Cavs fault, if anything he is guilty if trying to redshirt his recruits. He's the best o-line coach we have had since Tenopir.

Im glad we have him

"produce" is indeed a key word. Some have taken it to mean, Cav lands one of Sarrel or Filiaga or else.

I don't think it means that to Riley. Cav has recruited the position group pretty well and had us in the conversation of one the bigger recruits in program history. I don't think Riley has any immediate recruiting concerns with Cav.

I think Cav's future depends on how his OL performs when the shirts come off. They are not going to be "dominant" as a bunch of redshirt freshman, but we should be improved, noticeably.

Raridon is a legacy player that committed well before Riley was hired.

Not directed at any one post in particular. We seem to have this "huge gap" between 1st and 2nd string Oline players. Yet in year one, Sterup came off the bench and outperformed is 1st string counterpart. In year two, Conrad comes off the bench as a walk-on and outperforms his 1st string counterpart. In a 5-man only world, these players only get noticeable playing time after an injury. Clearly there is a problem.

I was expecting more out of Cav this year.
Well, in his defense, there were a ton of injuries on the offensive line this year. Also, Milt Tenopir seemed to really like him and Cav really embraces the tradition of the pipeline. He is clearly not a poor recruiter, even if he isn't a great recruiter. He also seems to be very well liked by his players.
That is why I am merely "on the fence" when it comes to coach Cav, rather than saying he sucks and needs to go. I am willing to give him time and the benefit of the doubt.
But Nebcountry raises some good concerns and I share them. And I am also not sold on this year's o line recruits as being anything special.

Yep, Davis to coach TE next year and the new 10th asst will coach RBs.

The new RB coach will be the 11th best recruiter in the nation according to one magazine and 12th best in his conference according to another mag.

This will disappoint the Tavita T. fans that pencilled him into the full-time TE coach next year.

Who?

Just making it up (the Davis to TE), but I could see it happening. Not many fans have complained of RB production, but you don't hear a lot about Davis good or bad.

As far as the RB coach, it was a tongue in cheek comment because of Donte Williams situation where he was said to be a top ten or whatever recruiter in the country by one website, and then only like top 12ish in his conference (not sure if the same year).

If Riley could find a great recruiter for the RB position, I could see Davis sliding to TE the same way that Syewart moved to safeties when DW was hired.

I guess that would be one of the benefits of having some assistants on staff with mutiple position capabilities.

You guys are crazy thinking Cav is going anywhere. He has put numerous OL in the NFL. Currently there are 4 of his OL from Oregon State on NFL teams with another he recruited likely to join them next year.

He has also been very loyal to Riley and passed up multiple offers that would have moved him up both college and NFL. On top of that his players love him.

This season the line was doing well until injuries. As far as recruiting goes we have yet to see an OL with his recruits on it.

I remember at Oregon State fans were having same issues about why Cav didnt play other OL. Clearly there was someone better than the "horrible" walk on that was playing the tackle position. Message boards blew up saying Cav had no idea what he was doing and the walk on shouldnt be playing etc. etc. That guy has been a starting tackle the last 3 years in the NFL. Cav knows linemen and their abilities very well. A lot more than us armchair OL.

And as others have said he preserved the resdshirts which will pay off down the road. Especially when there will be a pro style QB and what should be a very talented WR group.

Now Read. Im not arguing there lol

I'm very disappointed in Cav. While there's been a bunch of excuses to explain the play of the O-line, Cav still hasn't shown anything in Lincoln and the excuses don't support he's a good coach. I too highly doubt he's out this year and I actually think the solution is real easy.

Move Davis to TEs & help on Tackles & move Cav to interior. Have Cav the head of the O-line but Cav must respect Davis input. Hire a RB coach obviously. Davis coached O-line in the NFL. Think controlling the complete O-line is too much for most people, including Cav. IMO it's no knock, just is what it is.

Cav is reeling in it right now. Recruiting should be better. Play was unacceptable last year. But he's only been here for 2 years and next few years the talent should be there. I'm fine with letting him see it through but he needs help & Davis is perfect fit & already on staff. Davis just not a great RB guy but why should he be? That's not what he's use to coaching (prior to NU). That's not what he played. Plus recruiting an RB is different then recruiting a O-lineman type. Davis seems better apt for that.

That's great but does he know how to make the Olinemen good while they are playing in college?

He's still recruiting like he's at Oregon St. The O-linemen committed this year are very average I think.
This years recruiting isnt finished.

That's great but does he know how to make the Olinemen good while they are playing in college?

You mean like the 3 all Americans, and 23 all conference OL at Oregon state. Which is really impressive when you look at recruiting rankings.

The fact that our entire offensive line experienced injury with little depth behind them, with present/former walkons playing featured roles at center guard and tackle lies at the feet of a second year coach.

These guys are so correct, Cav has got to go! I mean just look at all the OL reaches since he arrived. Like Barnett, Decker, Gaylord, Raridon, Brokop, Farniok, & Wilson.
Just look at the O-lines he put on the field the last 2 seasons, he recruited all those guys right?

I think Reggie Davis would be my next coach on the chopping block. Our RBs don't really seem to be growing. I'm also still a bit bitter that Riley didn't keep Ron Brown, that dude knew how to get the most out of his RBs!

Clearly is correct as I perceive it; there was enough criticism out there by mid-season, that he said he wasn't totally against rotation. Where coach P firmly believes in rotation and development on the d-line. An older coach with hardening of the attitudes; can get caught up in his own nuances and favorites, picking that over reality; imo. It can be any age; but HCMR seems to want results and I am sure the A D and others are giving him feedback.
....... Hard practices ( not to a fault ); with lots of reps and younger guys getting reps; is a key. Think of the recent mentions of Sunday practices for the younger guys; the department is paying attention and being innovative IMO> GBR
