Sports Cards. What is your best card and story?? And Do you Grade??? Need some serious advice.

Back in the day, it was really sort of casual? I guess?

Basically seemed like a garage sale but inside a hotel convention center? I am sure you know what I mean. It seemed more about seeing other cards and less about selling them?
Speaking of hotel convention centers.... is there anything more 90's than some baseball player signing autographs in a hotel on Cornhusker Hwy. I can't even remember who my dad took me to get. Maybe Dwight Gooden and a few others.

All the matters is what is grades at with PSA...I don't follow it a lot but I feel like in the last year card prices have gone down a decent amount. Also what do you mean #1 of 50?

Only 50 of that particular card were manufactured. It’s very rare. No matter what the grade is he’s going to get a lot of money for it. Some Jordan collector out there needs it and will pay up.

It is LITERALLY the first one printed. Only 50 were made and this is #1. The dealer's I talked to said that can add anywhere from an extra 20 to 25 percent to the value.

Sold my massive collection about 10 years ago. Kept only a few. Ozzie Smith RC is my favorite. I frequently miss it, but it’s just a bit overwhelming, and grading is all part of the fun that has been drained out of it. That said, if my kiddos had any interest, i would no doubt reengage. I have 2 girls and they don’t have any interest.

I didn't notice any numbers on the card from online sources having to do with 1-50.
Exactly. :)

If you look on EBay the ones that are listed are the ones with the blue boarder. This has the black boarder refractor.

Again, depending on condition the could be $$$

Very, very rare.

Yeah that’s it. Those values are way low. OP can easily get 10-15k .. double my amounts depending how it grades
This is actual sales though - so I’m not so sure. Anyone can ask $20k for a card but I believe this site measures actual price. Probably good to temper expectations - hopefully he gets more. Even if he doesn’t - still an unreal find in commons!

Hello my Husker Board Friends!!!

Long story short. I am 49 years old, I have lived through the junk era .
Over years I have picked cards. We have owned a storage unit for 15 years. No Shit, half of that storage unit is cards I bought at garage sales over the years, pissed the wife off something fierce!! lol

Life happened. Kid, Wife, Job, and build a Home. Put It On Ice
Anyways we just finished up our edition.

Every Night since Feb I have been purging cards. (The Junk Era Crushes My Soul)

I cry every night....I have books and books of Mike Geenwell's, Jose Canseco, and Ken Griffey Jr's. That was going to be my retirement, lol. Not worth hardly anything now.

I have held on to everything.

Fast forward 15 years.

I AM PURGING. Need to clear the storage unit and half is my Star Wars and Baseball Cards.

I am going through my old cards and crying in my soul because I know my massive collection is worthless. It can be "Soul Breaking!!! I shit you not, LOL!!! Damn You Jose Canseco!!!

Now on to the garage sale bulk totes. Been going though since Feb....Eight totes.

Wait for it.....#1 of 50. Yep.

I took it to the card show in Grand Island last weekend to test the response. You would have thought I was Taylor Swift walking into a room of 15 year old girls. Everybody at the show had to check it out. (Between us. It was the coolest moment of My Life)

I am not making this up guys. I have not slept two weeks. Kinda Freaking out. lol

It is in a safety despot box, now I need figure out how to get a card graded. Any advice would be awesome.

PSA for Grading??

Go Huskers!!
PSA then Beckett for basketball. Don’t do SGC unless it’s vintage.

There’s a show in council bluffs this summer and graders will be there.

If anyone is selling their collection I’ll gladly buy. If it’s vintage we’ll pay 80% of comps to 90% for bigger cards. We’ll buy anything from 1k to 200k range.

Agree 100%. The grade will determine everything. Even if it comes back a an 8, it is still going to be in the thousands.

Correct! When I sent cards out to get graded from my childhood - I had a Jordan beam team from stadium club first year that came back as a 9.5.
My Montana RC came back as an 8.5 but I’m going to send in to PSA to have it regraded - if it hits a minimum that I will list they will repackage and put it in their case. Difference from 8.5 to 9 is pretty big and it had a 9.5 sub grade, 8.5, 8.5 and an 8 …. Hoping it will get me over the hump with PSA.

After picking out any cards that were worth a little bit, i threw away thousands of cards from the 80's and 90's. I sill collect vintage cards. I just finished the 1965 Topps baseball set, worked on it for 30+ years. They are my favorite baseball cards of all time. Must be over 30 HOF in that set. My set is in the Ex Mint to near mint range except for a few graded stars. Set is probably worth over $5000.

PSA for Grading??

Go Huskers!!
PSA Grading in theory should help you get more for the card, but that will be dependent on what the grade ends up being. Based on what the storage conditions sound like, it seems like there may be some kind of damage…

I had a buddy get a MTG card graded, he pulled it from a pack, knew it was a high value card and instantly protected it, came back graded as a 9.5 and not a 10, because of some unnoticeable “damage” to an edge… that simple 9.5 compared to a 10, knocked off ablut 2-3k from the estimated value of the card… what you see listed online are typically the value of the card as a perfect 10…

It’s not a bad thing to get it graded, I’d most likely get that graded if it was me, it’s a nice card and a great find so congrats on that. And good luck with whatever you decide to do with it

I finished my 1965 set about ten years ago. I have been working on filling in vintage baseball, basketball and football sets for most of my life.

Just for interest, what is the usual cost from PSA for grading single cards? Thanks RDP

Depends on the value of the card and turnaround time. A regular card with a insured value up to $500 and a 45 business day turnaround can run $25. Twenty day time, $40.

The more valuable the card, the higher fee. There are different tiers into $1000's per card. Bulk rates of minimum of 20 cards with $500 insured value can be $15/card.

It's not cheap.

Did OP ever get it graded??? Let’s hear … the rest of the story!

Fair point RBigredMax, LOL, forgot to follow up!!!

So, I ended up sending in close to 100 cards to get it graded. Got some pretty good news.

The Jordan 2001 Black Refractor ended up coming back with a grade of and 8. It was a little off center, so I will take it. PSA estimates that it could be worth $10,000. Only 4 of them have even been sold in the last 4 years. One actually sold last month for almost $16,000 and it was graded a 9. I had a card dealer last month offer me $8,000 cash for it and I turned it down. My good friend who is very into cards said he would not take less than $12,000 for it and with it being #1 out for /50 he said he would start at $15,000 with it being a "Unicorn" and so rare. For now, I am going to hold on to it.

Here are some of the other better cards I had graded and what they got for a grade and estimated price...I got up charged on some and that is a good thing. $$$

It cost me almost $3000 to get all of my cards graded. But keep in mind my collection is worth $50,000. So, I knew it would not be cheap. I wanted my daughter to be protected 20 years from now.

Was bored awhile back and went through my sports cards. Mostly baseball, some football and a few others. Disappointed to find my cards I collected as a kid were pretty worthless. Most expensive cards are probably a few Willie Stargelll cards that would be worth a bit if they were mint. But they are damaged so say 10 dollars tops lol.

Will probably get back into buying some sports cards sometimes soon. Probably find a good Topps baseball set to try out.

Pokemon was my favorite as a kid and I have a few that are worth a bit. Honestly I've gotten back into buying those again within the last year or so after a two decade or so hiatus. Nostalgia and old habits die hard...

This is real interesting to me as I was a collector in 80's 90's. I need this advice from you on some collections I have. Can I text you as my email out of service for awhile? My wife has her laptop that we are using. I dont regularly right away how to get it off this site. Thanks RDP😊

I have a Gem Minte 1990 Topps Frank Thomas error rookie card. I haven't looked up the estimated value in a while, but I know it's a big number. My grandpa pulled it from a pack about 30 years ago and got it graded at a card show a few years later. I inherited it when he passed.

Which error card do you have? The "no black" or the blank front? Either way, if you find a buyer you're looking at a few hundred dollars. Good card to have.

I started collecting in 1981 thru early 90's. Ended up with complete Topps, Fleer and Donruss baseball sets for the entire 80's. Got into all four sports also. Then I kinda stopped for awhile other than a few boxes/sets here and there. I got back into the hobby when Topps started making the Heritage sets. Fleer & Upper Deck followed with their "vintage" looking sets.

Can't imagine how many cards I have now.

Great thread! I've been thinking a lot about alternative investments lately - the vast majority of my retirement savings is tied up in stocks bonds and CD/HYSA. I'd love to diversity somewhat and collectibles are something I'm really considering; I'm thinking more numismatically, but cards and other sports memorabilia has my interest as well. I'd probably start somewhat small, but there is so much to learn - but that will keep my brain working and also give me something to do in retirement. I need to befriend some coin collectors and sports memorabilia merchants!
