Our lack of tradition, plus our location, means we are going to have to spend more than other programs if we want to bring in top-level talent. If a player has the same offer from a program like Kansas or Kentucky or really any other successful Power5 program, he's not going to pick Nebraska.
Or you have to go out and hire a coach that every player wants to play for....but you're not going to get a coach like that to coach here. Hoiberg is a former NBA coach and executive, and he put a ton of guys in the NBA that he coached at Iowa State, and still he has not been able to recruit very well here. So the way I see it, the only way we're going to get high-level talent here, is by being willing to pay players more than any other program. But unless a big-money donor steps up to fund our Basketball NIL, that's not going to happen.
Don’t be so sure..He can’t have a season like his first three in Lincoln.

Fred swung and missed on all his portal guys last year. We were outbid.

He had the BIG 10 leading scorer and could not make the Tournament. Terrible.

My point is that Howard having contacts and Fred believing he could bring those high level players to Nebraska was contingent upon Nebraska dishing out NIL. Coupled with Fred believing he would be having better and more consistent success on the court. Losing team and low NIL is not a winning combo for any recruiter.
Additionally, when Bryce Williams was recruited out of Charlotte, no one thought this guy is going to lead the big ten in scoring.
And he likely doesn't if he had a competent team around him instead of being virtually the only scoring option (or one of two halfway capable of scoring consistently).
Bring in players from mid majors who are stars for their team. Stop bringing in retreads from other Big Ten schools like Essegian, Griffiths, and Meah. Now, they’re thinking of bringing in Sandfort. Stop doing that.
I would take Sandfort for sure. He's the kind of shooter we need. I don't disagree with your desire for mid-major stars though.
I think it depends on why they are leaving the P4 school. Neal at Creighton was a good pickup for them. When a coach is fired, and the players transfer, even players that play for a new coach for a year then transfer after their role is diminished because they don't fit with the new guy. I wouldn't entirely stop bringing in P4 players or even players from Big Ten teams though.
We don't like to admit it, but either Pryce Sandfort or Josh Dix would be a big upgrade over any wing players NU has returning. Even Brock Harding, who's probably a fringe Big Ten player, would be an improvement over the Huskers' hot mess at point guard.
I hope Fred is in pursuit of some bigger fish, but after the past season's portal whiffs I'm not counting on it.
Starters from other big ten teams, not subs. Essegian 3.1, Berke 4.1, Meah 5.1, Ulis 6.1, Griffiths 5.5 just doesn’t cut it. Which makes Fred’s comments about finding shooters so absurd. He didn’t last year, why would he this year?
Couldn’t have said it better myself. Sandfort was a star on his team. Much like Chucky Heptburn was a star at Wisconsin. I have no problem taking players that have proven they can produce at the highest level, what we need to avoid is players with “potential”. We took to many players that showed flashes at their former schools and we thought we could elevate their game and/or further develop them.
B1G, SEC, BigXII, Big East and ACC are not developmental leagues. Don’t waste a roster spot on someone you hope can do it, spend the money necessary to find the players that have proved they can do it. Whether they come from a lower level D1 program or one of the P5.
This will be interesting to see how this plays out. Will Fred go back to what with he did previously with the likes of Williams and Mast from mid majors or repeat what he did with the likes of Essegian, Griffiths, Berke, Ulis, and Meah as subs of big ten teams?
I hope he learned from last year’s portal class. P5 backups and roll players < Non-P5 stars.
