So with all the talent need discussion...

I don't know - does it make a difference when a kid is sitting across from a coach who says - "Join us - we build championship teams and win championships. Come help us win more" versus "I will help you become a well rounded student athlete and you might help us win my first championship"?
Wow, I just assumed Riley was a little more articulate than this... I didn't know these were the only two things a coach could say to a recruit.

Thanks for the 411...

Or, I'm betting Riley might mix it up a bit more than this, that he has a better pitch than this. It isn't all about winning championships, otherwise your post would apply equally well to guys like Harbaugh, who has never won a championship either.

So we make around $20 million from the B1G partially vested, around $40 million fully vested. One only has to visit or see pictures of our facilities to see the vast, VAST amount of money poured into this program. To go cheapskate on the coaches is crazy.

Definition of Cheapskate? Are you talking 10 mil for a head, 2 mil for D or O coordinators? It adds up. Lets assume you can get this kind of money - who do you get. I use to manage 4 mil at a college, not much to it but when you say we will get 40 mil and we are talking at least 10 mil going to coaches it doesn't leave as much as you think. 30 - 40 mil, and we are not even there yet, doesn't go as far as one thinks. So this train of thought is the only thing that is holding us back is spending more money. Sound like a federal government plan to me.

I agree - my point was for simplicity sake. Of course Riley is more eleoquent in his pitch - but when you have a performance track record, that is a nice advantage. You are correct that Harbaugh has not won a championship at Michigan yet - but do you really think Riley's resume competes with Jim's? We are in a "what have you done lately" world and Riley will have an uphill battle for kids that want to play in big time games.

It takes $400K to get DWilliams, we paid it, basically doubled his salary. We are only talking incremental cost. The incremental cost to hire DWilliams was exactly zero. Remove Read at $400K, slide in DWilliams at $400K. Except for a high profile/high cost head coach, the bulk of the budget is already in place. And I'm not talking about paying an average coach the highest possible wage, I'm talking about paying a great coach what it takes to bring them here. We can even remove Riley from the conversation, because I'm not looking at this as a "replace Riley" thread.

We'll have approx $20 million more coming in just from the B1G. Obviously, some of that money will go to other sports, but I would guess the bulk would/could go to football.

If a current position is being paid $300K, that money is already accounted for in the budget. If we have to go to $500K to upgrade the position, we only have to come up with $200K more incremental cost, as $300K is already accounted for.

I don't know the salary ranges for coordinators and position coaches around CFB. It seems like 1 million to 1.5 million is what some programs are paying for pick-of-the-litter OC/DC's. We're already paying half a million each, right?

According to this USAtoday list, 4.5 - 5 million$ (roughly) is what the big boys are paying for their coaching staffs. We come in at $3.8 million. Pay the incremental cost to compete, hire the best rather than people we know. Or continue to bargain shop.

You're on the right track.

We've already had this discussion months back. The answer was that we need better Bag Men. Winking

We have no identity what so ever. The way we finished the season was pathetic. We are soft and the way it looks are many years away from ever being elite again.

Defense needs a lot more speed. Let's hope the coaches have a good plan to finish-up this class. My guess is they do. Like another poster said: MR's 26th ranked class will be better than Bo's. Not that we should be thrilled at 26, but I do believe things are trending, ever so slowly, in the right direction.

Ya, when a guy like Ed Orgeron publicly states that he's interested in joining the NU staff, you actually have to talk with him instead of just ignoring him.

Everyone but you and @CameronKrazie86 knows Orgeron was lobbying for the DL spot at Nebraska to put pressure on Les Miles to make a decision and hire him.

Middle of January 2015, Miles officially hired him.

Congrats, you would've hired a guy to coach at Nebraska for three weeks.

Goodness gracious, some of you are in la-la land.

We had the best defensive lineman in college football actually at Nebraska in the last 20 years and we still couldn't capitalize on Suh with regards to getting supreme defensive line talent to Lincoln. Again, it isn't as easy as some people think to get them to call Lincoln home for 4-5 years.

By then Pelini's reputation had already gotten out.

Like they say in the business world, to Make Money you have to Send Money. So for NU to recruit and win like the elite teams like Alabama, LSU, Ohio State, Clemson, FSU and etc., they have to pay for a good coach to come here.
This isn't the end all solution, ask the Philadelphia Eagles, Washington Redskins, you have to have someone who wants to be here, motivate to go the distance, have an attitude, work with the culture, be able to instill the will to be GREAT and fight for the team. Create a fun environment and build relationships that go beyond goals, getting rid of any skepticism.

It helps to have some geographical luck. It's easier to get Grant Wistrom and Mike Rucker out of Missouri, Mike Minter out of Oklahoma and Trev Alberts out of Iowa when those teams are down.

Well, also in the early to mid 90's, not only were those teams "down", but so were OU and almost every team in Texas. There was a real recruiting vacuum in the Big 8/SWC footprint that Osborne really exploited.

Totally agree, talk about a perfect storm.

Exactly, and that power vacuum in our region also allowed Osborne the luxury of finally recruiting players with a specific eye toward speed and the ability to beat the Florida schools
Exactly, and that's why I'm calling it geographical "luck," and sadly doubt it will ever happen again. But Callahan gave us the model of recruiting our game day experience, Riley, I believe, is embracing it and doing everything he can. A little time is needed and some luck with chemistry. But also I feel a great, great QB is a must get.

Also, Callahan didn't focus on California as much as Riley is. Callahan brought in some very good players from Arizona for example.

"Bryant can take his'n and beat your'n, and then he can turn around and take your'n and beat his'n." -- NFL coach Bum Phillips
He said that back when virtually all of college football was dominated by mostly slow white players....but Switzer did say that about TO as well. Said he had to out recruit him to beat him.

Well, Texas and Missouri are kind of down. Baylor may start to turn down, A&M and TCU are a bit iffy. Also, ASU and Arizona are trending down. Maybe it's time to churn them all again and hit those states hard the next month. Might find some lost gold in them thar hills.

Rampant steroids in his players, covering up crimes, badgering witnesses.....
Bingo!! Not to mention Dr Tom became relevant when Switzer retired or the ending wouldn't have ended pretty. Knowledgeable fans know that too!!
