I really like the kid as a person and his commitment to the Huskers despite everything.

But… Now more than ever there’s an elephant in the room.

I’m a little surprised he hasn’t transferred to an option school or made the transition to WR.

Dude is an athlete, but maybe just content to always be a backup and get an education?

In HS he broke Bo Jackson’s touchdown record, so you can’t do that without being a good football player, but not necessarily projects to a QB in college.

What does he do? I applaud the kids loyalty but what’s he waiting for?

Sometimes it transcends beyond football. I don't know much about his personal life and that's good thing sometimes. I will always hope for the best for these kids who are loyal to the program and maybe they find a place on or away from the program that makes them happy. Good young man.

The guys on 1620 this morning all felt Smothers was actually a very good fit for Rhule's/Satterfield's offense - much better fit than Chubba. I tend to agree. IF that is true, I could see him sticking around to give it a good shot. I remember after last Spring Game (I think it was) someone in the media asked him about moving on & he told them he wasn't going anywhere because he loves it at Nebraska. He came here to be a Cornhusker. Maybe he changes his mind but I think he stays & competes.

Maybe he is just waiting to finally be coached.

The problem for Chubba I believe is that this would be another transfer for him and he probably would have to sit a season unless he went to a lower division. Smothers of course could play immediately somewhere else.

both of our backups should thank their lucky stars to have crossed the radar of our previous coach

they have no other options than to stay here based on their play - they are not better prospects than the 17 year olds coming out of high school even after 3 years in college

both should bilk the University for every penny they can education-wise, and Rhule should treat them as something less than GAs from a depth perspective when recruiting/courting more QBs who will actually see the field

it might have helped if we played smothers against northwestern and indianna, and not michigan. dr. tom used to break in new qb's in 3rd quarters of blowouts or against ksu...but neither of them are happening..

I mean, the cocky UCF coach and his Harry-Potter-lookin’ qb coach turned out not to know anything. Adrian Martinez had to leave after 4 years to finally show what he could do with a real coach.
I'm no frost apologist but AM went to kst, lost to a G5 team, threw for the least amount of yards/attempt of his career and got benched for a kid the coaching staff was desperate to redshirt

let's not rewrite the history books

I think both of those guys could be developed in to reasonably good RPO QBs. Smothers I think could be a gamer.
you cannot coach "being a gamer"

you either are or you aren't, and smothers fumbled away any doubt in the biggest game of his life at home vs iowa 2 years ago

Kleiman didn’t even bench him. He wanted to save the backup’s redshirt even though he was clearly better than AM. AM got a career-ending injury on a QB sneak. It’s why I’m still not convinced about Kleiman

HH has a strong arm but his passes are usually in a different zip code than his receivers.
strong arm - not coachable, but is table stakes in P5 (smothers/purdy can't even make the ante)

inaccurate - can be coached!

it should be beyond obvious to everyone why our new Head Coach has only said 2 names publicly from our QB room - CT and Haarberg (loves his potential)

I would add that there’s several more elephants still in the room for other position groups. Rhule and Co. need to somehow assess what they got and replace what isn’t working.

While they haven’t worked with this team, they could at least look at 3+ year players who were not on the 2 deep last year (3 deep maybe at a couple spots). That’s the group that needs to move on.

Bigger hardon?
TT for MM
or
KK for HH

Mike Leach totally disagrees with you btw

Smothers and Purdy should both remain. They both are capable of being QB1 at Neb. with good coaching and offensive line play.

That G5 team that beat K-State is likely the best G5 team this year. They have an 11-2 record, so not like they lost to some bad G5 team.

Safe to say Thompson may be looking to move on?
He's been really hard to read thus far. The last interviews I've seen...he appears to be pretty upbeat about the new coaches and direction of the program. So, we'll see....but it can't make the current QB's on the roster feel good with Sims being added to the roster - who i don't see being any better than Purdy or Smothers or Thompson

There's been no indication either way.

Given that, it appears that the coaching staff is preparing for the contingency of him not being here.

Which is a breath of fresh air.

With the previous staff, instead of planning, we'd just get caught with our pants around our ankles after spring ball and end up with Smothers / Purdy next season.

I agree. At least from where I sit, he's been a great team player who has dealt with multiple changes in the offense and the QB room and always stepped up when called upon.

Smothers is always discussed as the "running QB," but he certainly threw the ball better in his limited opportunities than Purdy, the "passing QB." I also won't forget that he played well against Iowa in '21 and against MN this year when he went 5 - 10 for 80 yards and had a couple drops that hurt drives. He didn't have much chance against Michigan, so I don't hold that against him.

Honestly, I think he'd be a good fit for Kansas State, or if he wants to get closer to home, a program like Troy or some other regional school that could use his dual threat skills. He might even stick with Nebraska if the offense trends more toward a dual threat offense. With a guy like Sims coming in that could be the case.

Ya his 2,600 pass yard, 17 pass td’s and 600+ rushing yards and 8 rushing td season at Nebraska was embarrassing. Give me a break some of you misery posters are laughable.

Frost blew his chance and didn’t work hard but saying he doesn’t know anything. Glass always half full trolls, misery loves company.

Hi, I’m Chris Hansen with dateline NBC and we’re doing a story on child predators.

Why don’t you have a seat to discuss your depraved incurable sickness on national television before 8 police officers outside put guns in your face and tackle you to the ground.
