SIAP....The 1000 pound Gorilla in the room...

I have wondered about this before. I new a former player who pretty much never played. He said he hated bowl game practices, but loved the trips and the free stuff. Which I totally get.

For fans, bowl games are "great" because it is another day of watching your team, hanging with friends and gambling.

I agree with the OP. I think many in our fan base feel the weight of bowl-less seasons, in addition to the players.

If we could get that monkey off our back on Saturday I think our team will play looser the rest of the season.

I HOPE playing looser translates into playing more consistently & better. 😂

I guarantee the players care about a bowl game. Additional practice and get a nice trip - it matters to most.
I hope you are right, but doubt it matters much except to the younger and poorer players. Many of the best seniors will probably opt out and begin prep for the draft. As for the rest of the better players, remember they are essentially pro athletes these days, so getting a free trip and some swag probably isn’t a big deal.

Obviously fans are starved to see the Huskers in a bowl game though.

I don't see many of these seniors opting out. Maybe a transfer reciever but many of these guys want this one badly. Too much losing and they want to go out winning. This isn't a case of top draft picks having a disappointing season. Win 2 or 3 more and they may ALL play.

Remember that year when we voted not to go to a bowl game. **** that lame ass shit even if we didn't deserve it.

Of course a bowl game matters. It better matter to everyone. I do understand if some opt out to prepare for the draft, but I also hate that.
Maybe that's just me being old and set in my ways. IDK.

Nobody really cares about the December exhibitions. With the expanded playoff, they’re even more meaningless

Would be nice to check that box and participate this year, however, even if the B1Gs bowl affiliations will likely send us to a cold northeastern locale

At the time I got why so many teams were doing it. They were sick of playing in front of no fans, wearing masks everywhere they traveled, etc. But, dam, if we had just played in a Bowl Game that year, we wouldn't be hearing about that long bowl drought right now.

It's also interesting that the offensive players were the ones who didn't want to play, and guys like McCaffrey and Wandel ended up transferring after the season anyway.

I can think of a couple of seniors who I hope opt out.

Speak for yourself.. Meaningless in your mind not mine..

This Saturday will either put this program back on track or it will set this program back. There are way too many great recruits attending this game for this team to squander a great opportunity to show this program is on the rise. You can have all the nice shinney things you want in buildings and facilities but if your team shows nothing on the field it's all for not. Nebraska has a must win game this weekend, period, don't make it close Huskers.

Not even in my mind. I think it’s a milestone that needs to be reached.

Dec bowl games are just universally more meaningless now that the playoff has expanded

I 100% agree if you’re a program that wins 6-10 games every year. But for the programs, like us unfortunately, who’ve missed this opportunity for multiple years I think it means a lot. JMO

The playoff is “the show” - the rest of the bowls are similar to NIT tourney. We have to at least make the NIT!!!
Your comparing an apple to a orange.. can’t compare the two..
362 Division basketball teams.. There are 133 FBS football teams..

Seriously? This take calls into question all your other takes.
seriously.. most star players have been opting out of bowl games these last few years.. it's another chance to get injured and there is little to gain from it, unless you're a backup player trying to get noticed.

Also, I suppose the trip to Florida/Texas/California would be nice for a kid from Nebraska, but I doubt it means much to the players who are actually from Florida/Texas/California etc.

Now a playoff means something, and ofc the players want to play in that game, but a bowl game these days is kinda for losers.. (think about it from a championship mindset.. that's where all the losers end up.). And if you're a fan looking at this as your super bowl moment or just something meaningful, then I'm sorry, you really are living in another world.. which ironically is where most Nebraska fans are living these days.

Which makes it almost exactly the same, with regard to ratios. Considering there are 11 playoff spots open for 67 teams - essentially 1 in 6 teams get into the playoff. 1 in 5.3 get into the NCAA tourney.

I disagree with the take that many players don't care about playing in a bowl game, unless it's a bowl game that could lead to a national title.

I think most of these players realize that their college years are the end of the road for playing football, most won't ever sniff an NFL roster. Playing a team sport can feel uniquely satisfying. Going on a trip together, and making those memories, is something they'll always cherish.

Yeah... there's softball & bowling leagues after they enter the work force, but it ain't the same.

I always thought players wanted to go to bowl games to...but it wasn't that long ago, when they were given the choice, thet voted no...i'm going to assume that mindset left when they left the program.
Well we're playing like we don't want to go 😵‍💫
