Shatel nails it...

I don't even need to read it. I've read several of these stories for the last several years, and their all basically the same. "TO and Fraizer ain't walking through those doors again, get used to being no more special than (insert any mediocre school name here), it doesn't matter how many titles you won in the past to kids now-a-days, geographical location working against us", etc, etc.

Close?

So you aren't brave enough to open his link either I take it?

I took the bait and opened the link. Not a big Shatel fan, but have to agree that he pretty much nailed it, for what NU has to do to compete in the West Division going forward. We need to be PHYSICAL and play SMASHMOUTH football again!!!! GBR.

Forget smashmouth - just developing a better than average oline, and Dline that can stop the run and get after the passer would transform this team to a conference title contender. Better QB play would also help - it was abysmal vs Iowa. The fact the rest of the team decided not to show up ready to play meant our 2 injured QBs had to play lights out - and they could not do it. I don't get the not being ready part - WTF happened in the week prior? There needs to be some HARD looks at that by Riley and maybe SE because it is not acceptable.

Banker fails to understand the fan base at Nebraska when he made that comment. The last thing we want to hear is another team is more physical and practices differently than we do......cripes TO was a viewed as nice guy but he DEMANDED the team bring the wood on both sides of the ball every day. There are players today that will tell you games were easy compared to Husker practices under TO. I know there are some rules today that inhibit that to a degree but there is no excuse other than being a pussy or stupid to not be a physical team.

Doesn't have to be Smash football from the glory years, just more physical to play in this B1G conference with the same physicality as Wisconsin, Ohio St, Michigan and obviously Iowa and not patty cake practices.

We handled the physicality of Wisconsin 2 straight years. We were fine in 2015 against Iowa, but not the other day; they kicked our ass all over the field from start to finish minus 1 Husker drive. Yes; Iowa was more physical than us, by a wide margin the other day.

Ohio state didn't "out physical" us. They out coached us & out athleted us at every single position. Coaches and players.

This whole "patty cake practices" is taking on a new life of its own.

More physical practices ya, that isn't going to make Utter, Dzuris or Akinmoladun any better. It's not going to make Stotlenberg not get pushed 4 yards down field or Maurice non-active; which neither had that problem against "physical" Wisconsin. It's not going to help Banderas from [slightly] over pursuing then slipping. It's not gonna help Williams for letting a miniature poor mans version of Wes Welker from running right by him. It's not gonna help Deidrick Young in pass coverage on 4th & 8. It sure isn't going to help Foster, a case could be made it'd hurt him [since his return].

What will help our team first and foremost is the MENTAL part [Maurice & Stoltenberg] of beating that ass that's across from you. It's the MENTAL part [Williams] of playing your responsibility. It's the MENTAL part [Banderas, 3.5 year starter, senior] of getting the job done when you haven't been touched. It's the MENTAL part [coach Bray] of not having Young on the field on 4th and 8. It's the MENTAL part [coach Langsdorf] for not pulling your QB when he still throws the ball up in the air, praying someone catches it. It's the MENTAL part [coach Cav] for not benching Utter when there's continued film of atrocious play. It's disrespectful to call yourself "the pipeline" while someone such as Utter has missed more blocks than he's made. Week after week, game after game.

Nick Gates is a nasty SOB. So is DJ Foster, and to a lesser extent Farmer is too. Heck, Conrad showed real good signs of (imposing his will) improvements the last 3 weeks before his injury at Iowa. How are they like that with "patty cake practices"? They have a desire to destroy the person across from them. That desire wasn't there last Friday. From too many players.

Here in lies the problem. We are counting on/hoping a PAC 12 coach that was getting pressure for not performing in his previous job will somehow change his coaching philosophy after a lifetime of coaching at 63 years old. Good luck with that...

Just in case anyone is interested in the hot takes from "B1G RED RULES", enjoy.

There's been a little bit of a rumor mill that Read will go bye bye and Tavita will come on board. The suggestion was that Miles, Leitao and Allen would not be coming here if Tavita disappeared after this year when his GA period was up.

Keepdreaming. Riley and Read are buddies. The fact that Riley has wasted a full-time position with this individual for years is just one of the many reasons Riley has never wonanything meaningful in college football.

Why is Bama and OSU so good.

Comes down to recruiting.

Until Neb starts to recruit like a top 10 and top 5 school, they aren't going to get back to the glory years.

Harbaugh is crazy good and more crazy than good but he can recruit with the best in nation.

OSU and Bama have the two best recruting machines.

They are consistently in the top 5 for recruiting.

S &

Yep. Most here think we can pay a middling coach a middling salary, and expect to compete with the likes if Meyer, Harbaugh, and...Ferentz?

Nevertheless, as long as we hire and treat our program like it will defy logic and rise from the ashes, we will see more of what we have watched the past 15 years. 9 wins, 10 wins. 5 wins, 5 wins, 7 wins. Losing records. Winning records and wins that come with a side of cautious optimism.

I'm on the fence about Riley. Banker? Based on his two years here (and his previous performances), I don't need to see any more. And I'm sick of the talent argument. It may have some merit in year 2 of the current staff, but until any of us are given the job of recruiting coordinator or actual recruiting, we need to pipe down.

Only the current staff has the power to change that. Or perhaps the results on the field are actually reflective of the current state of our talent level, and the current state of our program. If we continue to hire unproven or losing coaches, I don't see it changing any time soon.

We don't have a magic potion here, one pays for results, as much as it pains me to say. After getting smoked by a mediocre Iowa team, I pretty much feel like this:

Michigan and Michigan St both run pro style offenses. Their QBs have traditionally been throwers and not runners. Their running backs run their QBs throw. It is also cold and occasionally windy and snowy. Wisconsin QBs are traditionally not runners, Penn St also traditionally has throwing QBs. .

You have to be able to run the ball to be successful in the Big Ten on that I agree but you don't have to line up in a 22 formation and run off tackle to be successful. Ohio St has shown you can zone block and be physical on the OLine.

You are not going to be able throw the ball around in 25 degree weather with winds at 15 to 10....we need to run an offense that is heavy on the run....period.
Good grief......this whole weather thing and running the football all the time is funny! All we need is the right players to fit his system. It's not like Riley wants to pass every freaking down. Kids want to play in a Pro system and it works just fine anywhere in the country.

Weather thing is like a bad joke that's been propagated after TO made a comment about it a few years back. Lot of Husker fans don't know football outside of what they watched in the 90's. They should try telling the Packers, Bears, Steelers, Giants, Patriots, etc. that it gets cold in the winter and you can't throw the ball when it's windy.

Players to fit his system? NFL QBs and 6' 7" OL. Good thing few other schools recruit them.

Agree. Now we just need to go recruit Tom Brady or Aaron Rodgers to come play QB for us.

Don't respond to that guy he's a troll affiliated with the Pelini regime. Just check his posting history and his first ten posts.
I figured as much. Pathetic. Crawl back under your rock and wait for the day we get your top tier big money combo of Frost and Bohl. LOL, Must suck to be a troll and contribute NOTHING positive or worthwhile to this board or the Huskers. Sad

Few other schools recruit DQB? Yikes.

You want dual threat DTQB's like:

Brion Carnes [transferred to Northern Iowa], Jamal Turner [moved to WR], Cody Green [transferred to Tulsa], Taylor Martinez [initially recruited as safety], Kody Spano [injured, quit], Bubba Starling [MLB], Tommy Armstrong, AJ Bush [JUCO bench warmer], Kevin Dillman [DE at North Texas, yes a defensive end], Johnny Stanton [lost starting spot at UNLV].

Heck, we can get walk-ons like Ron Kellogg and Ryker Fyfe to back then up if needed.

Heck of a list there, I tell ya! I'll take my chances with two coaches with a strong history of developing their QB's over any DTQB that's signed here in the 8 classes.

I think it's fair to say that Riley wants to be physical and run the ball. Don't tell me that just because he was in the Pac 12 it can't be done. Look at Stanford the past few years.

The whole "bloodbath" thing is getting a little old IMHO. Would I like to see Nebraska have physical practices (if they are not)? Sure. However, the offensive line was a MASH unit most of the season, and the D-Line has a 2 deep at the DTs and that's about it. So IF Nebraska wasn't having bloodbath practices, I can understand a bit why for this season.

Is the lack of depth at the OL Riley's fault? Not yet, but as each season passes, his excuses run out. Is the lack of depth at DL Riley's fault? Somewhat. Had he dropped the hammer sooner opening up the DL coach spot sooner, maybe we have two guys who might appear in the superbowl this year still on the team. Next year, the DL will still be thin, and that's not all his fault for next year, and it's just not realistic to expect Watts, Porcher, Thomas, and Thomas to be impact players next year.

It's going to take some time to rebuild the lines, so I'm patient, but each year that level will decrease. I expect a good team in 2018, and yes that schedule appears to be an absolute B$%#H, but I will expect to not be destroyed on national TV.

That pretty well sums up a huge portion of the program's problems for the past decade.
