Saturday notebook: Huskers hold first live scrimmage of camp

***The big news of the day came when head coach Mike Riley confirmed that the NCAA has granted Tulane transfer quarterback Tanner Lee a waiver sixth year of eligibility. The junior, who redshirted his first season at Tulane, will now have two seasons to play as a Husker beginning in 2017.

***Here are the players who did not practice on Saturday while dealing with unspecified injuries: Jordan Westerkamp (groin), Michael Rose-Ivey (knee), Cethan Carter (concussion), Chris Weber (concussion), Khalil Davis (knee), Charles Jackson (hamstring), and Keyan Williams (hamstring).

***Not only did Nebraska practice inside Memorial Stadium on Saturday for the first time this fall, it also held its first live scrimmage session of camp. In all, Riley said the first- and second-teams each got about 25 plays in on the day, and there were plenty of good things from both sides of the ball.

***The Huskers were able to get through the scrimmage relatively healthy, with the lone injury coming to freshman linebacker Greg Simmons. Simmons collided with a defensive teammate while trying to break up a pass over the middle and was down on the turf for at least 15 minutes before being carted off the field.

Simmons did give a thumbs up as he was carted off, though, and Riley said Simmons had "good feeling" in all of his extremities and was coherent and answering all of the trainers' questions. Simmons complained of neck soreness, so NU proceeded with standard neck injury protocol.

***One of the standouts of the scrimmage was freshman running back Tre Bryant, who had a big day on NU's second- and third-team offenses and even got some reps with the varsity group. Riley said he still doesn't know what they're going to do with Bryant as far as redshirting or not, adding that his situation was "a tough one" because Bryant is ready to play this season, but they want to make the best decision for his future.

***Nebraska had a very important recruit in attendance for Saturday’s practice, as five-star wide receiver Joseph Lewis - the No. 3 wide out in the 2017 class - was in town for an unofficial visit. The Huskers’ coaching staff got a little creative, too, with several staff members wearing red t-shirts with the number four - Lewis’s high school number - on the front and back.
