I went to my first K-State game in 1980 against Missouri. Other than watching Nebraska Wesleyan games, it was my first college football experience outside Lincoln.
I was amazed at how kind the KSU fans were to their abysmal team. The fans applauded every first down because, well, that was about all they had a chance to cheer. The 'Cats beat CU in their final game of the year to give you a sense of how horrible Colorado was that year.
We've been bad the last seven years, but we've never been THAT bad.
In 1981, Jim Dickey redshirted most of his seniors so the 'Cats could make a run at a bowl game in '82, which they accomplished by going 6-4-1 and getting an Independence Bowl invite, something even Lynn Dickey and Vince Gibson couldn't do back in the late '60s, early '70s. KSU lost that bowl to Wisconsin, but it was the trip that mattered, right
