If you are talking about a game day coach, I agree he was not great. TO outcoached him big-time in 1994 in what was McCartney's last and best team IMO. Also, who could ever forget his decision to kick to Rocket Ismail with less than a minute to go in the '92 Orange Bowl and Ismail taking it to the house which would have prevented the Buffs only MNC, but the play got called back and CU won. McCartney deserved to lose that game out of stupidity.He was not that great a coach. Should not have been in the hall of fame IMO.
However, he built the program into a national championship contending program after Chuck Fairbanks ran it into the ground in a few short years. As a program builder/motivator, I would take exception he was not HOF worthy.
