RIP Bill McCartney

Read as “RIP McCartney” and thought the Cowboys fired their coach. Guess that’s what I get for skimming thread titles 😂

Fk him he was a POS that raised a whore for a daughter. He tried to bargain his way into heaven. Hopefully he died a miserable death.

Actually he forced Nebraska to get better, for years it was just Oklahoma but along came Colorado and that wasn’t acceptable for Nebraska and fans . I respect the man except for his over obsession with Nebraska

Always has to be someone.

The man just died, a little respect would be nice whether you liked him or not.

We all have flaws in our lives, and immediatly upon ones death is a poor time to point them out.

Its pretty easy to predict who's going to come into a thread like this guns a blazin and what their going to say, and equally as predictable to know ahead of time who's going to like their post. Its totally expected.

Its amazing how some can't separate a football rivalry from what really matters in life. There were certainly things I didn't care for about McCartney, but the fact is, he stepped away from the career he wanted to do since he was a little kid, while at the pinnacle of that career, to focus on improving the part of his life he wasn't proud of and didn't look back. I can hate on his Husker-obsessive ways, but I can't hate on the man. RIP.

I used to call into his radio show on KOA Thursday nights during the season and give him the business, man did those cu fans dislike me by the end of those calls, but McCartney had a good sense of humor and played along. I'll give him credit for being a coach that hired real good assistants and let them do their job, Mac was the motivator and got his team fired up and ready to play.

Yeah, his obsession with Nebraska was strange, but then again, a lot of cu fans that egged him on were just as strange. Did Mac have his troubles? He sure did, but no reason to dredge him through the mud now that he's gone, had that opportunity when he was alive. Met him a few times while working in the stadium where his office was, when I introduced myself the first time, he knew right away who I was, "that Nebraska fan who always calls in to my show." RIP

Been reading several pieces that took place over the years on him this morn, from early stuff to near the end...remebered some things i had forgotten and learned some new things as well....really incredible story on a man who was as flawed as they come and equally amazing. Glad he's been reunited with his wife and that he isn't suffering anymore.

CU has been looking for their next McCartney longer than the Huskers have been looking for the next Osborne. McCartney's death is another dose of reality as to how long its been for both programs.

Wow. Find yourself some counseling.
Why ? If say this about a Charles Masson everything is fine. The man preached hatred towards a football team state and individuals that rooted for that football team and lived in that stae . I stand by my post .

It’s the same to say that about anyone

Highly unlikely CU will ever contend for a national title again, especially out of the Big 12.

Heavily involved in "Promise Keepers", iirc.

I used to work with one of those. Had a huge bumper sticker on his car that said "I Love My Wife" which was part of the whole Promise Keepers thing. He was divorced about a year after I met him. Strange dude

He talked crap. Many coaches do. If he preached it towards Oklahoma instead of Nebraska would you be on here today making these comments? Or are you just hurt that he said it about Nebraska.

One of the things I did not know about him was his recruitment of Hagan...I didn't know Hagan was a Crip, and McCartney was known to drive into the worst neighborhoods in his shiny Caddy...during an in home visit he asked Hagans mom how it would go over if her son came back home wearing red....he chose the Buffaloes. That's pretty brilliant. I also forgot he banned his llayers from wearing anything red. Haha

Obviously no a fan of OU or anybody else and no probably would have noticed it at all .and taking coach talk crap and preaching hate are two different things.

Do you think he really hated Nebraska or was it to motivate the team, to push the program to reach Nebraska’s level? Whatever it was it worked. Let’s say it was true hatred. You’ve now also displayed hatred towards McCartney so I shall assume it’s for people to treat you the same way.

If you saw the documentary....maybe it was a 30 for 30?....yes....he really did hate Nebraska. He even fabricated stories to say what terrible people Nebraska fans are.

I hope he found peace later in life. He certainly did a lot of good things, too. However, he still hung on to a lot of hate for people that happen to root for another college football team.

Howdy dana!! Good to see ya.

I did not see the documemtary. I know he had a laundry list of flaws he was pretty honest about later in life...I don't really hold it against him, the grudges he fabricated against us and creating a rivaly out of thin air...and one of the things that makes really competitive guys in sports so successful are attitudes like the one he had when it came to Nebraska...heck even Michael Jordan used to lie about opponents to psych himself up for a game...thats what people like them do. Thats how I reconcile it anyway.
