Rimington

Didn't hear the press conference. Did this sound like a tryout for the AD position?
No. Said he's not a candidate and will return to his job with his foundation after they hire a permanent AD. 60 day time table. I believe him and he sounded sincere. Said he's here to calm the waters until a permanent AD can be hired.

OK...thanks.

And fix the walk on program and make the former players feel welcome.

I'm guessing Dave is pretty connected to players and their feelings. It might be fun to be around the AD's office for the next few months to see some faces that haven't been around in awhile. Not sure he can fix the walk-on program in 60 days, however.

Anyone else concerned that he mentioned fixing the walk on program and welcoming past players as things he wants to fix in the next 60 days? What does that even mean?
It's red meat for the former players and tradition coalition. He said it so knowing what we know about him he will do it. He will LISTEN to former players, take their calls, return their emails etc. He will be available to answer questions and listen to concerns. SE's biggest failing was in interpersonal communication. Personally I believe that our walk on program has been handled most recently very well by Riley and his staff. Former players don't understand the difference in a scholarship to SDSU versus paying your own way at NU. The inflation of the cost of education has sky rocketed in the past couple of decades. Times change but DR will listen to fan concerns and address them as best he can in 60 days.

I'm not so sure there is such a thing as fixing the walk on program. Back in its heyday, they had unlimited coaches and a freshman team to be able to handle a bunch of players on the team. Now, with a limited number of coaches, budget restraints, the cost of a college education today and the emergence of schools like USD, SDSU, North Dakota and NDSU as schools who can now offer full rides, I am not sure we will ever see a big walk on program again. I know that a lot of people blame Callahan for killing the walk on program, and he very well may have put the final nail in its coffin, but it was on its way to being a shell of its former self when it was cut back. There are a lot of factors on why the walk on program isn't what it used to be and may never be.

I would completely agree. Then when you add the proliferation of media so that other schools are watched on TV/internet, you see their websites, and then you are offered their scholarships it's hard to turn down. Plus, let's be honest, when you aren't consistently at the top not every Nebraska kid grows up dying to play for the Big Red...especially at the expense of playing somewhere else.

So we aren't getting enough bandwagon fans? Not sure I'm buying that.

Not being on top is why people who were already fans but aren't anymore and go away. Maybe the parents who were front runners and stopped watching are the reason why their kids don't have a love for the school and the program.

Kids in Iowa never have grown up dying to play for Iowa State. Same goes for Kansas. Why? They don't win. Call it bandwagon if you want, but if you don't win it's a lot harder to make your way into the heart of an 8 year old kid even if you are the home state school.

It's low hanging fruit, that I agree with.

He didn't sound all that comfortable with the media. He said a couple of times that he hasn't been back much and only watches on TV. Hasn't visited any of the new academic building because he is done with school. ehhh

Former corn husker, check
Good leedership, check
Same last name as my faverite rifle, check

Seems like a good choice to me.

What that means is we are going back to the way things used to be done here. It is pretty obvious to me, this is an end to the "New Nebraska" and a return to the "old Nebraska". You know tradition coalition thing that everybody hates on here.

Like it or not, that is obviously where we are heading.

I was in school not too long ago and I saw more kids with Texas, Oregon, or Oklahoma gear than I ever saw Nebraska.

You mean like 2007 old Nebraska when the king of old Nebraska was the AD?

What is obvious, after hearing the press conference, that he is not a serious candidate for the permanent position. No offense to him, but the walk-on program isn't getting corrected in his "up to 60 day" contract, that is barely enough time to even find out why it may be broken let alone fix. Again, it's low hanging fruit and buzz words from the past to attempt to calm the waters.

Well he didn't say "fix," he said "improve" the walk-on program. I think there's a big difference. I just read it as it being a part of the program he already knows something about and can improve in his short window of time. How he can, dunno.

On an entirely different note, the Boomer Esiason Fund employs a Pelini. Who knew!

The only reason Conrad is at NU is because when he took his visit up north he thought he had a scholarship offer and then found out he didn't. When he didn't and NU asked him to walk on he came to NU. Think about that. We've started a kid at center that the Dakota schools passed on.

There's no sense in firing Tim Miles. He's doing an excellent job.

Here's the thing, and I'm sorry if this shatters any safe little bubbles people live in here: college basketball is all about the talent, and to get the talent, you must be willing to do things that are against the rules, unethical, and maybe even illegal. Top recruits go to camps, they get handled by select team coaches, and they are all for sale. If you're willing to grease the palm of the right person, you can gain access to the talent. It's not a one-time thing, though. You have to build relationships, so over time your "sponsorship" of their camp or team yields results.

The problem is that Nebraska keeps trying to do things "the right way," when their opponents aren't. They want these honest-to-goodness student-athletes who study hard, write papers, say yes ma'am, and volunteer at hospitals. It's cute, in a 1950's sort of way, but it does not reflect the current environment in college basketball. Do you honestly think any of the high-priced recruits spending one year at Kentucky have ever seen the inside of a classroom?

So let's cut the crap. Either you have college students who also play basketball, or you have basketball players. Which do you want? Would you take a conference championship in basketball if it meant a scandal? Would you relish a Final Four appearance if it meant probation followed? No, because Nebraska is too busy losing games the right way...

I disagree. True, to be great a team needs to have elite talent. But too be good, all you need is solid talent that doesn't make mistakes and doesn't beat themselves. Good coaching can make it happen. Is it easier to get a team to play that way? No. Nothing is. But do-able. I just don't think Miles can do that coaching job. Again, It's a tuff job to do. And if Miles could land elite talent,he'd be fabulous here. I just think there needs to be a coach that recruits well, not great, but makes sure we don't beat ourselves on poor shooting when there's open looks, etc. will they win titles? Unlikely but

Same with football really. The teams probably 4-0 if we don't beat ourselves. People talk about a talent gap but teams that don't beat themselves narrow that gap. Picks, pick 6s, key false starts, dropped balls, missed blocking assignments, etc. when's the last time we saw a good game by the football team. Games where we actually didn't turnover the ball, didn't have key false starts, caught passes, etc...If the team played that way & we lost cause we just weren't the better team, I'd honestly be ok.

I doubt we are able to pull Chryst from his alma mater.
After all the replies I realize my post was poorly worded. What I was trying to say was that I have a feeling that Eichorst probably called Bielima, then Chryst, then Mike Riley when he was looking for a coach back when Bo was canned. He called Bielima first who didn't want to leave Arky, then Chryst who like others have mentioned before wasn't interested in a B1G job other than Wisky but he likely recommended Mike Riley to Eichorst. Eichorst called Riley and the rest is history.

Bielema, He flirted secretly with Eichorst to get a big raise from the hogs. Brett would have been a disaster as well. Just shows how truly bad SE was at hiring coaches.

He'll be begging for a job here soon. Found out real quick the SEC is a whole other level.

It wasn't Bielima. Bielima had some of the same issues with the Wisconsin administration that Bo had with our s and HP wasn't going to put up with that. Tuco's already laid some hints out there on who it was and it Bielema doesn't fit the description.
