Rhule: "I have one job: It's to win at Nebraska"

Who bitched about the oline from the portal? Maybe I missed it. My complaint is our best lineman are coming from the portal. That has been little development on the line. Sure corc got hurt but he just isn’t that good. Benhart played marginally better his last year. Haven’t seen much of Raiola’s recruits doing much and taking the spots
He’s just lashing out.

Poor guy hates the walk on program and NE HS football players so much he can’t help himself

I can't help you with that. I don't know if you know what you are looking at.

he is a really good oline coach.
I admire your dedication to willful ignorance. Not sure anybody’s ever shoved their up farther up their own ass.

Bring back the Trev avatar! He’s a really good AD!

I admire your dedication to your multi-handle decade long troll.

You have yet to prove that past coaches have taken swings and misses on nebraska kids over national kids.
I have literally given examples of this being false…that the opposite is true, that our coaches have turned away from Nebraska kids because they are from Nebraska and frost himself signed lower ranked recruits from out of state over in state recruits. From 2018-2022, he had just 16 in state recruits. From 2023-2025, rhule had 19 commits. It is false that past coaching failures is because we chose to recruit nebraska kids instead of national recruits.
Frost in 2018: 1 of top 5 Nebraska ranked kids
2019: 5 of 5 (the one outlier)
Frost in 2020: 2 of top 5 Nebraska kids
2021: 3 of top 5
2022: 1 of top 5
Rhules 2023 class was hurt due to frosts in state efforts including a TE that is at Oklahoma.
If its coaches ignoring local kids in favor of national kids you want, you most certainly loved Frosts recruiting strategy.
In these years he went harder after players from out of state rated lower than some of ours. Coaches theoughout the state will tell you of his lack of interest in their players.

No, I dont agree that coaches felt pressure to win a certain way, if they did the facts show they didnt act on it. but every coach has and will feel pressure regardless of where it is from. I actually believe there are more people like you who look down upon nebraska recruits than people who favor them. This board alone is an indication of that.
As others have said, its only natural for any and every college to be more “in on” recruits from the general geographic area.
However, the simple facts prove that your perception that nebraska coaches of the past favored nebraska kids over national recruits is false.

I’m not currently arguing whether I agree with your preferred strategy or not, so you are shouting at the clouds. Most people just hate seeing kids going to ND, FSU, OK, Stan….

Im proving to you that the perception that past coaches recruited nebraska kids harder than national kids and that it was a contributing factor to their failures is FALSE.

Yeah we will agree to disagree. If you don't believe their was/is pressure from coaches to win a certain way at Nebraska then we are probably wasting time with this entire conversation.

As long as a coach came in and mentioned

Walk on program....check
In state football players...check
In line with the thinking of Osborne...check

He was already 3 steps ahead of the game and trust me they all knew it and acted accordingly.

EXCEPT Callahan who did it his way and probably would've recruited more and better NFL players than any coach on the list.

But again we won't ever agree on this if you can't see or acknowledge this was a thing.

I feel like people are taking this quote in a strange way. To me, it seems like he's saying to the fans and HS coaches in the area, sorry guys I know it's sentimental but the game has changed, you can't come after us for not giving in-state guys extra attention anymore.

For example, could Ed Foley have been of better use traveling to visit higher priority recruits instead of doing Diners Drive-ins & Dives tours around Nebraska just to show his face and make the locals feel seen? I think Barrett Ruud had that type of in-state specialist role under Frost too, and I'm sure someone under Riley, and Pelini. And still, certain fans and high school coaches would publicly complain that local schools and recruits weren't getting enough attention from NU coaches.

We may not be able to point to specific players this won or lost us in recruiting battles, but the idea is that we can't be expending any extra resources for sentimental reasons anymore. Winning, in theory, will make everybody feel good so their feelings shouldn't be hurt by the lack of attention... Every decision on where resources go needs to be directed toward wins.

And that may end up being a catch-22 down the road, where a disgruntled HS coach takes the lack of attention personally and pushes a kid toward another school when we do come calling, but I dunno. It's a consequence of modern college football being a poorly-run business where the rules keep changing and everybody's flying the by seat of their pants.

This post is spot on. Especially the part about Foley and Ruud and company with the "Nebraska tours" is an example of what I mean. We know there is talent in the state. We also know that the state deserves to be recruited hard. But fact of the matter is for the most part some people will still complain that we aren't recruiting enough Nebraska kids. Or bitch when random Nebraska kid goes to Iowa or ISU or KSU or wherever else they may go. I get the feeling but people have to understand that just being a D1 guy isn't enough anymore. Coaches have to evaluate to a higher level. IF winning at the playoffs level is the goal you gonna need a bunch of playoff level players. Are some of those in the state? Damn right there is. But is there 1 -3 of them or like 8-10 of them? That's just what us as fans gonna have to come to grips with

When OSU recruits Ohio or Bama recruits Alabama or Georgia recruits Georgia even they can only sign the creme of the state. Those are in talent rich states that have double digit D1 guys. But they also know there are some players in Florida, Louisiana, Mississippi, Texas etc that are more talented than some of those D1 guys in their state. So they go and recruit those as well. It shouldn't be deemed as a slap in the face to the state. It's just coaches trying to get the best available players they can regardless of the state they reside in. Imo it shouldn't be any different in Nebraska. Where it would be even harder to win with just in state D1 guys because their isn't nearly that much talent available.

We gotta get out of our feelings and look at these things realistically. If you wanna win you have to act like it and recruit accordingly. If we are ok with having feel good stories and winning 6-7 a year just let that be known so everyone is in the same page.

That record will get Rhule fired. We all have got a understand that the changes made doesn't leave much wiggle room at a place like Nebraska.

You wonder how a program can spend $160MM-ish in two years and win 12 games total. Then you read all the “if fans”.

If Teddy P and Corcoran were Penei Sewell and Frank Ragnow we’d be in the Playoff.

The point is that what you are describing is what we have already been doing, and even sometimes turning our back on “the cream” of the nebraska crop. Or are you going to argue otherwise despite evidence above?

You dont seem to understand that people arent saying we need to get a bunch of nebraska kids and over recruit them every year. We’re saying we have not been doing that, as the rhule quote seems to insinuate.

Yes I would absolutely argue that we have been recruiting the cream of the crop when their isn't someone better.

What I would also say is what if that cream of the Nebraska crop isn't "good enough" to compete and beat the likes of a OSU or Oregon etc? Are you suggesting we still take them even if they aren't that type of player?

What if we can sign a better player than that cream of the crop player to compete in the BIG? Are you suggesting we ignore that player and sign the Nebraska kid for any reason other than him being for Nebraska?

I'm an advocate of taking the best player. The one who gives you the best chance to be at the top of the BIG. I don't care if he's from Nebraska or South Dakota. Florida or California. If he's the best we can get go for it.

It's not as hard as yall are making it.

Oh yes I disagree. I think we have signed some kids that we could have done better than. I also think that when the numbers were what they were previously you could kinda offset those mistakes.

Currently I don't think that's the case. With new rules you can't afford to make those same signings. I'm not sure Ruhle was saying what you are saying he was but I DO believe it to be true.

Yes he admits that. He is saying the exact same thing as you. He has to win or else he won't keep the job. That's literally what the quote is saying.
For manny many years, preachers been promising farmers for rain if the farmers just contribute money to the cause . Nothing has changed

I feel really bad for you if that’s your experience… You’re getting shafted by your preacher, because most preachers don’t make silly promises like that. You probably need to go elsewhere.

Could start be not letting your best players miss a scrimmage. If you wanna keep the scrimmage closed to the public OK, but don’t let your top players. Just skip it all together.
