1. Emmit
seems to have everything but being a power back and not sure about break away speed..stays healthy
2. Rammer
seems about the same as Emmit but more weight..hurt last year
3. Donte
I was impressed, minus the turnover (see rhule). defiantly a goal line back
4. Gabe
not sure he is as shifty as 1 & 2. defiantly a goal line back

(I might be biased cause emmit stayed healthy, and reminds me of the jet)

I can see why it is difficult to pick one when they all seem to bring something

Emmitt Johnson is our best back in my opinion. That long run was textbook Emmitt Johnson- great vision, made one man miss and it was off to the races. And getting caught was also textbook Emmitt Johnson, he's not a burner. But I don't care. He just does so many things well. I also liked the pass that he caught and converted into a first down.

As for the others, I like Gabe and Donte back there in I formation as well as any other time Dylan is under center. Get either of those guys running downhill & hand them the ball. Or run play action/bootleg. That's playing to their strengths.

We haven’t had a RB with great vision since Rex or AA. It’s the most underrated quality of a good back.

Game one is definitely switch it up

1. Dowdell and this is huge coming from me because I NEVER thought he was more than a power back. I think I was completely wrong about him and he MAY be out most complete back (minus the fumble of course).

2. Emmit ...he does everything right and is legit. Hes a natural RB but lacks every down size and breakaway speed. Good vision, cuts well just not quite that guy but definitely can win with him.

3. Ervin..Big old school straight forward I Back. He looks like what I thought Dowdell might be but Dowdell showed a lot more quickness and power. Gabe if healthy can be a nice substitute or even starter if we need a big back. I like him.

4. Rahmir...is what I always thought he was. Fast, tough and smart but literally has no RB instincts or vision. Good out of the backfield and great in pass pro but as a runner imo he's clearly the worst of the bunch

Nailed it to me. This is the order I am in and I think we should go with the Top 2 for now.

Mmmm somebody told you Dowdell was pretty good😁

Rhamir did have one terrific run where he carried guys and got yards after contact but he missed a huge cutback lane. He’s still a good back.

...yes "somebody" did tell me that Dowdell was pretty good (😉 😉). Tell you what though the Dowdell from Saturday didn't look anything like the one I seen during spring game or the HS film.

He was much quicker a bit more shifty and appeared to be slammed down a bit and in better shape. I loved what I saw from him minus the fumble and again I will gladly eat crow if it's to be lol.

I guess I thought I saw at least flashes of those qualities in the spring game. You discounted the one longer run because of who you thought tried to tackle him. Even Rhule said that they saw things from him in that scrimmage that they hadn't been seeing much of in practice. I think he's a gamer who turns it up a notch when the adrenaline gets flowing. I'm not sure about his top end speed but I think he's a big powerful back with just enough wiggle to be a bell cow for us. I'm just hoping they don't get too carried away with punishing him for that fumble. That was a legit helmet on ball hit.

Currently he is the best back. I'd rotate him and EJ and then bring in RJ in obvious passing situations. The 1-2 punch should be Dowdell and EJ. Ervin can come in as well if we are pounding them, but a lot of times he looks to make a lateral cut and his quickness is just not good side to side.

I agree completely about the fumble but I understand Rhule's decision if he docks him some. Under no circumstances is it ok to fumble. But we do know sometimes (this one) guys just make a perfect play by putting their helmet on the ball.

I'll be honest other than the power he displayed in the spring I didn't see anything that made me excited about him. Even on his breakaway TD he looked a bit like a plodder. Saturday I seen a level of quickness and explosion in his first couple steps that I hadn't seen. Also seemed decisive and instinctual. To me he doesn't even resemble the same back and imo that's a good thing.

I agree about him having just enough wiggle. With his size and strength guys have to anchor down to hit him. It'll make it easier to dodge a few guys.

Like I said I loved everything about him except the fumble. Plus he doesn't need to have breakaway speed to be effective. I think him and EJ are clearly the most natural and imo the best two runners we have. At least they were Saturday.

I agree. Punish the kid for a series or two, but to not run it the rest of the game was dumb. He looked by far the best back and would have liked to see him get more carries. If he fumbled again, I get it, but didn't fully agree with the doghouse approach. Maybe it is a problem in practice and so that contributes, but man... After seeing him pound the rock, I think we are going to need to give him a shot.

I will 100% go on record doubting him from what a guy at Oregon had told me. That info seems wrong, and I feel like he is our best back right now. I've said this in another thread, but I think you go with Dowdell and EJ and bring in Rahmir for 100% passing situations.
