Rants and regrets: Do you buy it?

You ever notice that when a celebrity or public figure makes an insensitive or reprehensible comment and gets busted for it, they instantly go into damage control? Do you buy it when they come out with a statement that they were wrong and that what they said does not represent "the real me" or " that's not who I am"? Maybe that's exactly who you are and you're hoping we forgive and forget. I totally understand if you say something and instantly regret saying it. I know I try to make amends soon as I can. It just seems that some people are only willing to make apologies when their job is on the line or in the face of severe public backlash. Does it come across to you as disingenuous?
