R.I.P. Gene Hackman.

Check your carbon monoxide detectors folks. Or get one.
sure seems likely given that she was found next to a space heater of some sort. Furnace probably died. Just one of the reasons I have an all electric house. Wood burning fireplace for super emergencies. Cost me 20 grand to put the wood burner and chimney in 18 years ago and I've never had to use it... Our electricity was out for 3 hours a couple of weeks ago with -15 temps and windchill of -30F and I was about ready to head to the farm to get some wood but the main floor of the house only got down to 67. We have boiler warmed floor heat in our lower level an that slab of concrete is amazing at retaining heat. Way too many people die from carbon monoxide. A former boss of mine and his family nearly died over Christmas about 30 years ago after burning their fireplace all day long. One of them woke up vomiting and with a headache or the whole family probably would have been dead. Their sons were there with grandkids in tow in the house and some of them were difficult to wake.

When you're suffering from carbon monoxide poisoning one of the first symptoms is a severe headache. They've not said what kind of pills were spilled but I would bet on Tylenol. The report saying prescription pills is suspect at best.

Sounded like they were both dead a “while “ . Not sure what a while is but we will find out
News report said her hands were mummified but I wonder if they weren't just baked to a crisp from being next to a spaceheater. In any case there was some advance decomposition and they hadn't been heard from in 2 weeks so.... I doubt the drug overdose theory.

Scary stuff. My wife is OCD about it. Our oldest lives in an old house with 7 guys, your typical crappy college rental house. We've preached to him about making sure there are CO2 detectors on every floor. At least he's not in the basement. He also had to listen to my lecture about how people die in Minnesota every year because they get blitzed drunk and don't make it in the house. We're a real barrel of laughs!

not a big fan, but high plains drifter = a-ok

The Firm.
That movie should have been a bigger hit. Thinking about it today, it probably would have been better as a series on Netflix or Hulu or Prime. They get big actors to do those now and they would have been able to get more in depth like the novel.

I could even imagine a spinoff later on, like a prequal about Avery Tolar (Gene Hackman)

They have ruled out Carbon monoxide and gas . Tests came back negative. Said He died on February 17 according to his pacemaker activity. It’s going to be interesting what the cause is .

Was it because he ate too many cheeseburgers while battling stomach cancer?!

One of the greats: Mississippi Burning, Crimson Tide, Hoosiers and Royal Tenenbaums to name a few. Marine, actor, aged 95, lived on his terms. A life well lived.

Who had hantavirus and heart disease on their bingo card?
His alzheimer's must have been pretty far advanced for him to be living with his dead wife for a week without realizing it. What a sad way to go for both of them. She was his caregiver but she didn't have anyone able to help her.

Why would she just drop dead suddenly from hantavirus? Especially since she was seen out shopping and was sending emails the day she died. Hard to believe she wouldn't go see a doctor if she was that ill.

And Hackman had no other caretakers, despite having very advanced dementia? None of his kids ever checked on their Dad who had severe dementia? Some things are not adding up.

Media says they had many structures. Both are "mummified", is love to know what that actually means. The media thinks that we can't handle it. I beg to differ.

You want to protect a box by a body. Are you reporting beyond Rigor Mortis?

Why would Gene Hackman live alive before the post rated date that Betsy died

Respiratory viruses can cause acute respiratory distress such that a person can’t even manage to call 911. Hackman’s friends have said that he had dramatically declined over the past several months. No doubt he couldn’t feed himself and eventually got weak and fell.

I just find it interesting that a very wealthy 95 year old with very severe dementia did not have another caretaker besides his wife. Especially since we know she left him home alone regularly to run errands and stuff. I would think his kids would want another caretaker to at least check on him a few times a week if he was in that bad of shape. Maybe his kids did not have a good relationship with him? He didn't have Life Alert? Did the wife not have any friends or family either that would check in with her? That's hard to believe.

Clearly she was a devoted wife who did everything for him. It’s possible he was in such physical shape that she would go do things when he slept. My friends who have dealt with parents with Alzheimer’s say that they’re up all night then sleep most of the day. Her death is the most unfortunate one.

That makes no sense. If he had it that bad it’s almost impossible you could leave him alone for any period of time. As for her she was sending out emails and on social media in a he day she died. Can’t imagine nobody checking with no activity for almost 2 weeks.

I suppose, it's just hard to imagine that a super rich and famous person living in a huge mansion doesn't have people working there every day - they didn't have housekeepers who did the cooking, cleaning, and laundry for them? They didn't have a nurse/caretaker for him even though he was 95 with severe dementia? Landscapers, drivers, security, etc.?

His wife must have been very paranoid/controlling or something.

Gene was a pretty private guy and his move to Sante Fe years before that kind of thing was popular speaks to that. From what I read, she kept his schedule and that was fine for all involved. Hanta Virus is deadly, but its early symptoms are very easy to confuse with more standard respiratory illnesses.

Maybe , but she ran errands and picked up medication etc… . She was dead a few days before him they reported. If he had dementia so bad he didn’t realize she was even dead. There would in no world you could leave him alone for any period of time .as active as she was with email and social media ( day of death) no one would be concerned for weeks. There is something that not being told IMO.

Hackman and his wife were very private individuals and like a lot of elderly people, he was not out in public much during and post Covid, and apparently his dementia advanced in the interim. The lag between estimated time of her death and the discovery of the bodies was 2 weeks. The kids were in their 60s with lives of their own. Two weeks in the post-holiday period is not that long. Were the kids supposed to be calling his wife every few days to inquire as to how Gene's dementia was going?

my point is more about her sounds she was active in social media ( emails) . I would inquire if I was her friends when she posted nothing for 2 weeks.
