For the life of me, I have never understood how a kid can go through high school, graduate and still not qualify for an NCAA D1 scholarship. The requirements are well known. High school coaches who care about these kids should require all athletes to take these courses and maintain passing grades in order to play. I am from the stone age, but we had to maintain a B average to play any sport in high school. This standard was set by the coaches. I don't know of anyone who couldn't meet the standard. If the kid wants a D1 offer, I think he would do the coursework. Parents should also know what the requirements are. I have heard people say, well high school coaches and administrators don't care, all they want to do is win. That's B.S.. Are they educators or not. Do the Parents care about their child?
Bobby Knight would look at a kids performance in the classroom and if the kid was a C student he would tell the kid he was a non performer in the classroom and would probably non performer in basketball and therefore he couldn't count on them. Grades went up.
