Based on the 2017 roster, as it stands today.

Junior - Tanner Lee
R Freshmen - Patrick O'Brien
Freshmen - Tristan Gebbia

It'll be interesting to see if the staff tries to add a fourth QB before fall camp starts. Three is a dicey situation, not just from an injury standpoint but also scout team & reps with the groups lower on the depth chart.

What are your thoughts?

Same situation as this year. In hindsight, I wish the staff would have taken a QB in the transition class. It seems like we put all our eggs in the Flipping Joe Burow basket that class.

Can't be happy with the situation they are in now. I would bet that they look for another body to bring in.

Darlington will be a Junior, no? :)

Bama routinely has former players come back and practice....any chance we can talk Eric Crouch into hanging up his playground business for the fall to come back and run the scout team?

From an eligibility standpoint yes. From a depth standpoint, I don't see it. Agree on the transition class and since we missed out; not bringing in two in the 2016 class or even 2017 class is kind of a head scratcher.

I have full faith in this staff with the QB position. It's weird though only having 3 eligible guys while carrying [assuming] around 70 players on the offensive roster.

Good catch, but I don't see him staying at QB once this season is complete. Do you? I guess he could be used in multiple spots, assuming he doesn't crack the 3-deep at wideouts. Not a bad option to have running scout team when needed [week of spread opponents].

They have to be enrolled, not sure Eric is still taking classes. Big fan of Crouch but I'm not sure a 35-year old helps that much.

maybe not so funny .. going forward does Darlington help this team more as a receiver or QB??

there is also Reid Karel - walkon from Seward - decent high school QB - now practicing as a DB - to serve as scout team QB

I agree that Darlington moves back to QB from WR. To get to 4 players.

I don't think you are going to get a top flight freshman QB to come in with Gebbia. If you aren't going to get a top flight QB why use a scholarship that you can use elsewhere.

If you bring in a JUCO QB you run the risk of chasing POB away considering you already have 2 junior QBs. Not sure you want to trade POB for a JUCO brought in for depth.

And before anyone says if POB doesn't want to compete......it's not about that. If a coach recruits you as their first QB at a new school, then promptly recruit two transfers in, it clearly shows a lack of confidence in POB.

All that said, 4 QBs with Darlington in the mix, will be sufficient.

Yah this, and maybe a walk-on candidate would give them enough oomph. We're talking about the 4th QB in an emergency, not a starter.

Although I don't see it happening, that's the only option we have.

There are positions we've recruited under Riley, and all coaches prior to, where a top flight guy wasn't signed. At this point; without knowing the Darlington situation [which can slash this entire thread] we don't need a top flight guy to come in. We're looking for immediate depth, not someone to compete for the starting job. I do agree about your JUCO/transfer comment, bad message sent.

Good discussion folks, look forward to more.

If the intent is to redshirt Gebbia no matter what, it leaves us with two QB's. I suppose they could bring Darlington back into the mix, as he's said he'll do whatever the team needs.

Repetition builds confidence and competence. If Darlington is going to be a qb, he has to be taking reps.

File under food for thought. ZD has to be somewhat prepped as a "use in case of emergency" option, as we want to keep the year between POB and Gebbia. Those two will be competing for the top spot down the line.

Darlington moved to WR when Nebraska still had Armstrong, Fyfe, Bush, Lee, POB and a Gebbia commitment.

I have been told he has been in the QB room the last 2 weeks and will be there going forward into next year.

If you are just going to recruit a guy simply for depth, why not just keep Darlington in the QB room and have that scholarship open up in 2 years.

Jr Lee
Jr Darlington
RS Fr POB
Fr Gebbia

Sr Lee
Sr Darlington
Soph POB
RFr Gebbia
Fr 2018 recruit.

I could see taking 2 QBs in 2018 so you can keep 5 in the room going forward.

Although the newest target, McKee I think his name is, he is looking to take a Mormon mission and the staff is amenable to that. If you can grab McKee and one other prospect, knowing that McKee will be "in and out", that might work.

I don't believe under NCAA bylaw 14.2.1.6 the former players such as Crouch have to be enrolled in school.

"14.2.1.6 Exception -- Former Student Participating in Practice on an Occasional Basis. A former student (e.g., former student-athlete) at the certifying institution may participate in an organized practice session on an occasional basis, provided the institution does not publicize the participation of the former student at any time before the practice session. (Adopted: 3/3/11)"

Darlington needs to stay at QB now. Even with the loss of senior receivers I just don't see him having a big impact at that position here.

It's really only 2 QBs next year too. Gebbia will be in the same boat POB is in this year. He needs to RS but his issue isn't development, he needs to gain weight. He's too skinny right now to play and it's going take at least a year for him to get bulky enough.

I am starting to see a trend here with a few of the assistants. I don't believe it is a Mike Riley issue but when a position is thin, they shouldn't run players off Coach Cav with Thurston or Danny with AJ Bush.

AJ didn't want to leave NU. He loved it here. It was a disconnect with DL that caused him to leave. That should have never happened. He'd have created depth for a few years. Something we wont have for a few years.

No offense but Darlington will provide the same amount of depth Bush would have provided.

A disconnect with your position coach probably doesn't put you in line to play even as the 3rd string guy. Sounds like a guy who thought he should be playing but was told He wasn't going to be playing.

If Bush wanted to be here, he would be here. if you, as a QB, leave because you have issues with the OC/ QB coach you by definition didn't want to be here.

If there was a disconnect then there was a disconnect. Langsdorf never recruited AJ so I don't see a problem there.

Not sure that AJ leaving was a bad thing, his performance at Iowa Western has been, putting it nicely, disappointing.

I credit the staff for having the foresight to go get Lee. Plenty of coaches would have rolled the dice on O'Brien being the man in 2017.

Hadn't heard how Bush was doing, but from the looks of it, he may be headed to a DII program after Iowa Western. IIRC, he was considered a bit of a reach/project player when recruited.

Gave the D's fits when he ran in his last Spring game. Great size and some moves. I'm a fan, wondering if he could play a receivers position.
