Purdue's Hazell fired

They'd be extremely lucky to get Miles (or even an interview). They (Purdue) is pouring 65 million into improved football facilities. I get the impression their new AD is really trying to appease the donors with this change.

They need to hire Bob Stitt.

They aren't getting miles, fleck, frost, or any other pipe dream coach.

They don't want a mac coach, or a coordinator.

Stitt would be great there.

I agree don't go with another MAC coach. Illinois has raised the bar for coaching hires at non-blue blood programs in this conference. They should go after Schiano. He has his baggage, but he was able to win at Rutgers. It's time Purdue goes after a defensive guy.

Interesting tidbit, Hazell was a coach under Schiano at Rutgers before moving over to Ohio State under Tressel. I'd be shocked if Purdue went Schiano.

If I were Purdue, I'd give Les Miles a call. Even if he says he's not interested, it'd still be worth a shot.
I've heard the same rumors coming out of the little apple carried on the south wind the other day.

Are you sure Purdue is a better job than Wash. State? I'm not.

west lafayette is a crap hole ... I can't imagine any power 5 coach that is having any semblance of success going to Purdue ... their coaching pool consists of mid level head coaches, coordinators, or out of job coaches

Laugh all you want about Mangino but I wouldn't want to play him every year...

Did Purdue forget that they're Purdue or was there some other reason I don't know about why he needed to be fired? I'm not saying they had to keep him, but do they think they're gonna get somebody who goes out there and pulls them ahead of OSU, Michigan, MSU, Wisconsin, etc.?

I don't think that they forgot, but I can see how they aspire to not be known like that. Problem is, the only real way that happens at a Purdue is to hold a loser coach until they become a winner...and they (like everybody these days) don't have the patience.

Hazell was hired to clean up the mess left by Hope (who was hired over Chryst!) and failed to do so...actually took them further into the tank. Here's a little more insight into the situation:

Believe it or not, despite their miserable history overall, Purdue does have a tiny bit of tradition in one area: producing pro caliber quarterbacks. Therefore, I think they should try and play off of that with this hire. Bring in a coach with a proven record at creating wide open passing offenses. Schiano? No way. Too defensive oriented. Leach? His passing teams are too gimmicky and he would not take the job anyway most likely. Les Miles? Well, that would be a "splash" hire and a school like Purdue would be lucky to have him. Would he take it? Doubt it. And his offenses were not that good. I think the best option would be an offensive coordinator for some pro team. Dare I say, someone like Langsdorf?

What about Dan Mullen? He may be looking to get out of Starkville at this point and he's lost a little of his luster so Purdue may be able to buy while his stock is low.

Our program has been garbage since you guys joined the conference but historically we've been more of a middle-of-the-pack program than a doormat.

Hazell was an epic failure. The worst coach in Purdue history and you can make an argument for the worst in Big Ten history along with some Northwestern coaches from the 70's.

Burke was the athletic director that hired Hazell (Hope and Tiller too for that matter) and he retired this summer. Mike Bobinski is the new AD and nobody knows what he's likely to do. It was a departure from the way Burke ran things to fire a coach in season.

Rumor is that Miles has some interest. Most people outside the program would look at that and say he would be a home run hire for Purdue but I'm skeptical. He won't be able to recruit as well to Purdue as he did to LSU and he sure isn't innovative enough offensively to out-scheme good coaches. He would be a big upgrade over Hazell (almost anyone will) but I fear his ceiling at Purdue would be around the 6 win mark.

I'm hoping for someone who knows how to run a dynamic, sophisticated passing attack. That is our identity whenever we have been good. I wanted Mike Leach when he was available before getting the Washington State job. I doubt he's available now but I would take him if for some reason he was interested.

Some names I've seen thrown around:

PJ Fleck
Les Miles
Art Briles
Greg Schiano
Craig Bohl
Major Applewhite
Lincoln Riley
Scott Satterfield
Trent Miles
Jeff Brohm
Dino Babers
Brock Spack

There are probably at least a dozen more that I can't remember off the top of my head. 2 days out, I think fans are just kind of in a brainstorming mode and throwing everything out there to see what sticks. I even saw Bo Pelini mentioned by someone.
