Nebraska baseball faces off with the defending national champion Oregon State Beavers this week in Arizona, and the pitching rotation will look relatively similar to last week’s four-game series with UC Riverside.

The notable change, however, will be the addition of freshman Kyle Perry to the starting rotation. Perry will make his first career start Thursday against the Beavers. Chad Luensmann will start Friday’s game, Nate Fisher will start Saturday’s game and Colby Gomes will start the Sunday finale.

Perry came on in relief against UC Riverside and got a key strikeout that helped Nebraska take the second game of a Saturday doubleheader with the Highlanders.

“He made some awesome pitches, and ended up hitting the next guy in the head with a breaking ball, but when you needed a big out, we had to have it and he got it,” Nebraska head coach Darin Erstad said. “We always projected him as a starter and with the short week, we want to keep everybody on their normal rest and Kyle is next in line.”

Perry, a 6-foot, 170-pound left-hander, starred at Millard South, and Erstad said the freshman does a nice job of controlling the pace of games with his tempo.

“A lot of hour and 30-mintue games,” Erstad said of his memories of Perry in high school. “He gets the ball and goes. When he gets in a rhythm, he just keeps attacking. He controls the pace of the game and he’s a great competitor. He’s going to get comfortable first. You could tell there were some nerves out there, but when he gets comfortable, he’ll be just fine.”

Nebraska had a mix of newcomers and veterans returning from injury on the mound against Riverside. Erstad said he was pleased for the most part with the way his team pitched on the opening weekend.

“Overall, very pleased with how it was. Everybody has their own little mental demons they’re going to have to get over. We saw some of that. Some guys haven’t been out there in over a year, and they’re so hard on themselves. I told them, ‘Look, it’s going to be a rocky road coming back, you’re going to have some things that happen out there that are going to make you do weird stuff.’ It’s part of the deal.

“They try to be so perfect out there and get down themselves and want it so bad. You just have to try and keep hammering it in their heads that it’s part of the game. Baseball is a game of failure. You’re going to fail. That’s the way it’s been. That’s the way it’s going to be. They just have to learn how to recover from that stuff real quick.”

Good write up. I’m a tad skeptical giving the kid his first start against what is most likely Oregon States Ace (unless OSU are doing the same because of the Thursday start).

But, it could also be a way to steal a game on Friday and/or Saturday and willing to throw away Thursday. It is hard to guess what angle Erstad is playing.

Reece was by far the weaker of the 4 starters, and as I’ve said for a couple years now the kid is a great bullpen pitcher. Just accept that and be grateful. Not everyone has to be a starter at some point in their career.

Don't worry, it's not like Perry has to face a kid that threw a shutout in the CWS or anything...
