OT: The Great One about to be overtaken by the greater one!

Orr is the greatest defenseman but a shortened career keeps him from being the greatest hockey player. Cale Makar is doing things that haven't been done since Orr. He is only 26 so has a chance to approach Orr or at least talked about in the same breath.

Gretzky will always be the greatest. Goals only tell one part of the story.

Wayne Gretzky
  • Games Played: 1,487
  • Goals: 894
  • Assists: 1,963
  • Points: 2,857

    Alex Ovechkin
  • Games Played: 1,486
  • Goals: 894
  • Assists: 721
  • Points: 1,609
Add in the championship category as well - Gretzky 4 and Ovechkin 1.

Gretzky's total points will last a long time. Hockey is a brutal but beautiful game that very few can play, staying healthy is the key to longevity. Let's put to rest as to who is the greatest player to ever play the game it's unquestionably Gretzky but Ovechkin will go down as the greatest goal scorer, for now. I feel someone will break Ovechkin's record well before Gretzky's point totals but they are impressive non the less. As long as the game exists there will be another Gretzky and Ovechkin it just won't be soon. Congrats to Ovechkin now he must prove he can win more championships than Gretz (Won't happen) if he want's to be considered in the same sentence when talking about the greatest of all time. jmo

This is not even a real debate except for longevity sake as to the goals record. Gretzky had 15 seasons of more than 100 points, including 4 seasons of greater than 200 points.

Ovechkin has the same number (4) of 100 point seasons as Gretzky had 200 point seasons.
