OT Matthew Anderson...

Frost had a ton of big-time recruits to work with as O.C. at Oregon. De'Anthony Thomas, Dwayne Stanford, Josh Huff, Pharoah Brown, Royce Freeman, Byron Marshall, Thomas Tyner, Darren Carrington, Bralon Addison, Taj Griffin - they were all 4 and 5 star recruits. He wasn't working with mostly 2 and 3 star guys. Had Mariota gone to high school in the Lower 48 instead of way out in Hawaii, he probably would have been recruited by all the major programs too.

I remember Pelini talking about how his defensive scheme was so good, he didn't need 5-star guys - he would make his own stars. I don't want Frost falling into that same thinking. We had a ton of recruiting momentum in the 2 months after Frost was hired - I'm just surprised that we seem to be going after quite a few guys that other major programs aren't.

Oregon and Nike a whole different ballgame circa last 5-10 years.

He's going after numbers right now. You can't get choosy when there are so many cracks to repair.

We seem to be recruiting a lot of "under-the-radar" guys for the 2019 class. Interesting considering this staff was able to land seven 4-star guys in the 2018 class on short notice after being hired. It doesn't seem like that momentum is carrying over to the 2019 class.

I wish we were saving all of our scholarships for elite HS prospects but we don't have that luxury right now. Too many holes on the roster and Frost is eager to make the team competitive right away. In particular, there's a big opportunity for a breakthrough season in 2019, thus all the JUCO guys. But most of them are eligible this fall, so not part of the 2019 class technically. And you have to reach somewhat when you go shopping for guys who are still available less than three months before the season starts.

This staff will still land their share of HS studs before this class is through, I have no doubts about that. The best way to maintain recruiting momentum is to win as soon as possible, so he's plugging major holes on both lines and at CB to make the roster whole. I have zero problems with that. Over time, I think you'll only see JUCO guys when there's unexpected attrition, major injuries, guys declaring early or some other unforeseen circumstances. Or if the JUCOs are AA types that represent an instant roster upgrade similar to Greg Bell.

The good news in the short term is that the scholarships he's using now are basically those vacated by the guys that already left (or were encouraged to look elsewhere). And those scholarships will be available to redistribute within 2-3 years, so it's not like we're taking a bunch of Mason Walds that will clog the roster or force the coaches to pull a Saban on them when/if they don't pan out.

And even though he's only a 3*, Luke McCaffrey was a pretty big get as a QB with a world-class brand name and pedigree. I say trust the process and give these guys the benefit of the doubt until they give you a reason not to, but that's just me.

For those of you who have an interest in NU "building" OTs: "Nebraska is particularly high on Anderson because of his makeup. He’s a somewhat slender 6-foot-6 and 250 pounds. Anderson described himself as having no bad weight on him. In turn, he possesses unique athleticism on the line, which the coaching staff likes."

P.S. - Is there anyone in the recruiting game that Ryan Held does not know? "Held uncovered Anderson in rural Louisiana through word of mouth, beginning with Northwestern State offensive line coach J Pond, who eventually got word to Held about a kid he needed to check out."

You take any kid with high motor, good character, hard worker, and a ton of raw athleticism. I think this kid could be really good for us after a couple years in the system. By his So year he should be competing for playing time.

I kind of feel the same way but I hope I'm wrong
