OT: Jared Allen rides into the sunset

Its funny, I am an avid Raider fan but I don't pay a lot of attention to other teams and the NFL in general. When my niece moved to Chicago about a year and a half ago she started talking about Jared Allen--her girlfriend is married to the guy--and how nice he is. Well, I watched a couple Bears and Panther games this past year and half focusing on him and was impressed. He seems to be a very good person and damn good football player.

I wish him all the best in his retirement.

The first time I heard Jared Allen speak was at the 2010 Pro Bowl (after the 2009 season). It was the year the Vikings (with Favre) lost at the Saints in OT in the NFC title game. That year, the Pro Bowl was in Miami (the same site as the Super Bowl) the week between the conference title games and the Super Bowl. At halftime, I believe they introduced the players selected for the Pro Bowl that didn't participate because they made the Super Bowl. Jared Allen was interviewed on the sideline and tried to put on a happy face. The sideline reporter asked him what it meant to play in the Pro Bowl, and you could tell he had the words ready but not the emotion. He said something along the lines of "It's a great honor and a wonderful consolation prize to play at the site of the Super Bowl." It didn't quite come out right and the expression on his face was one of "I'm trying to be happy and appreciative, but I'm upset I'm only participating in this game because we lost last week." The reporter asked "Really?" He says "No, but it is what it is" or something like that.

Searched but couldn't find a video online. Have loved that guy ever since.
