Taking our Y basketball team rogue and playing in surrounding area leagues/tournaments. Does anyone in the West Omaha area have recommendations on gym rentals they've used or know of? Schools give priority to the YMCA and require an insurance policy so need something else. Reached out to a few churches but only 1 responded and they have limited time available.

TIA

Cant help with gyms, but if you are going on your own, I would definitely get insurance. It's pretty cheap. I'd think most tournaments require it in the fine print.

If you have any parochial connections with parents of players, use those. I know you mentioned you reached out to a few but maybe a parent can be your insider. Best of success.

Unless you know someone you'll have to rent a location and get insurance. No location is going to take the liability for free.

Try Saddlebrook, Common Ground, they both used to rent gym space years back. Also try find a parent with connections to schools. Many schools have gym openings when you consider you can typically get 2-4 teams a practice each night, depending on size of gym. I used to call the Millard Schools and try and get the leftover slots that were not selected by schools through the Y (or also feeder programs). You have to get ahold the right people at the district offices (at least that used to be true for OPS and Millard Schools). You may have to take later slots or Fri nights, as everyone wants the M-Th night practice slots.

Another option: You can also look for open gyms and hold "shoot arounds" where kids can just show up and shoot or play 1v1, 2v2. No coaching is typically allowed, but you can work one on one with players.

Another option: Reach out to another coach in your league, see if they'd be interested in sharing gym space for practices. You can hold scrimmages against each other, live drills, etc. OSA runs all their practices with 2 separate teams (20 players) on one court, it can be done 😉.

Good luck!
