OT: favorite whiskeys

I prefer Scotch to Bourbon, but like both. I like the smokey and peaty Scotches of Islay like Ardbeg, Laphroig, Lagavulin

My preferences in Bourbon tend toward classic sweet, smooth. So I like Buffalo Trace and Makers Mark and Basil Heyden

All great. Have you tried the makers 46? Elijah Craig is another sweet bourbon I like.

Just posted on another thread.. But try some Templeton Rye very very smooth, I love Makers Mark favorite bourbon, Buffalo trace is also very good.

Woodford Reserve or Jefferson's is my go to at the ABC store.
Basil Hayden's and coke is my go-to mixed drink.
I have only had two types of Scotch... a 21 year old and a 30 year old... trying to figure out the names. Definite game changers though.

I'm a beer drinker. That I love. However, I do keep some whiskey on hand for the occasional sip. I got some cheap Seagram 7 for visitors that don't appreciate quality and just want quantity. I have this Jack Daniels Gentleman Jack that is super smooth. On the higher end, I have some Maker's 46. Very yummy. I have some Glenfiddich, a fine single malt scotch. Too be honest, I'd be happy with Wild Turkey 101.

I guess I like Speyside scotches like Gelnlivet and McCallan. But I usually only drink them when I'm out. Sip bourbon at home.

In college all I drank was beer and wine, but a roommate turned me on to Jack Daniels, which I loved. As time went on, the more whiskey I drank, I bought cheaper brands like Black Velvet to save money. By my late 30s when I was going through a half gallon of Fleischmann's whiskey every week, I had a "moment of clarity", backed off big time and for the last 20 years enjoy a small glass of wine or Champagne only a few times a year for special occasions or special meals. I do miss the smell, taste and instant buzz a good whiskey delivers, but for me it was probably best to let it go.

Since I know you are "old" from the 78 OU thread, you can relate that things were different back then as far as drinking on airplanes, airports, lunch, happy hour, etc. It was just in our culture and more accepted. I am 58 and so old enough to remember how much more lax the rules were for drinking back in the day. Glad that has changed.
