ot: Anyone ever spend much time in a Muslim country?

Ahh the boogeymen Muslims, so scary. ISIS and al-Qaeda "attack" countries all over Europe & the U.S. , but never touch Israel. Gee, I wonder why?

Because Hamas and the Palestinian Authority and the Iranians would all be pissed for them moving on their territory....jk

I'll add back some humor. I don't know about egypt, never been there, but I've spent a little time in Malaysia. They don't use toilet paper and there are toilet rules. Your hotel will likely have it, and I would guess most places that cater to American tourists will have it. Just be prepared.

If you're going with your family, don't ever let them get out of eyesight.

The fundamentals won't want to talk with you, and some won't want you touching them in any way shape or form, so try not to bump into people. You may bump into the wrong person.

I've seen your posts, you strike me as a smart guy. So, just remember you're "unclean" and they won't want to hear your opinions.

You don't think "don't stare at their women, don't talk religion or brandish a [Quran], don't walk around alone" would be good advice for a Muslim visiting America? Particularly one wearing stereotypical "Arab" garb?

Being you used my posted to comment to someone else I'm unsure of what your point is. Do you disagree with the statement? Have you been there?

I spent a week in Malaysia not long after 9/11. My folks were a little worried about the trip but we had no issues. Lot's of staring from the locals, which, was only a little uncomfortable. Got some great software and movies at a really low cost but no issues walking around the area in the evening. At the time most of the "Dangerous area" was on the other side of Malaysia so comparable in distance to being in North Platte compared to Lincoln.

Every time I hear a story about an American in trouble or jail in a place like North Korea or (insert any Middle East country here) I think to myself, WTF were you doing there to start with? I know plenty of people go and come back and have no issues, but I've little to no sympathy for those who do run into a problem. I think it's a horrible idea but to each their own. I'm sure there's plenty of people who think i'm an idiot for a variety of reasons to.

I was responding to Jeans disagreeing with Big Red Menace's statement that similar advice could be given to muslims visiting America.

I don't disagree with your statement. I think it can be generalized to "be respectful and be smart" wherever you visit.

Yah really the bottom line is this. Another country is a foreign country. They do not respect American values and legal freedoms to be politically/religiously opinionated and self congratulating on how awesome your culture is.

When you are on their turf, its their rules. And if you don't want to play by their rules, don't be too upset when the State dept has a hard time bailing you out.

If you hate that the liberals, or PC police or whoever you blame, doesn't let America operate under those same rules, save your lecture for them when you get home. You won't end up in an Arab jail that way. Your patriotic monologue and defense of American correctness is not going to remake the Middle East, they've heard that one before. I've seen too many dudes who thought they were going to flex in a foreign country, end up in prison.

People always want enemies. But people are stupid. For example, we were in combat against the French more often in the 20th century than the Russians, but Russians were viewed as enemies more often than not. The Russians aided us in world domination 10 fold more than the British, but the British are allies. Saudi Arabia has done more for American growth and hegemony than any other country in history, and yet they are viewed somewhat negatively by our populace. A vast majority of people are nice, and what to be safe, respected, and productive. If you visit areas with vast disparities in wealth, carrying wealth then you are going to have problems. Universally. If you go to places that has restrictions on behavior, and you do not put restrictions on behavior, you are going to have problems. Universally. Humility and openness are going to create a great time, and you will impress on others, our most traditional values.

Spent a couple of weeks touring Jordan & Israel 2 years ago, loved both countries. Amazing places, toured
Petra in Jordan, Mount Nebo, Jordan River, old town Amman with a local we befriended. Most locals were very friendly & We were treated extremely good. Most of the locals in Jordan spoke good English, seemed to be well Educated.

Israel & Palestine are amazing places, mainly a holy lands tour in Israel. Found the local Palestinians to
Be very friendly & helpful. Experienced no trouble what so ever, local Jewish folks were not as friendly.
I would go back in a heart beat, holy sites were incredibly powerful to visit.

Flew into Cairo on the way, Egypt was a little scary. If u go with a tour group u will be fine, I think u get
An armed escort every where u go in Egypt. I would like to see the pyrimids some day, being in a large
Group in buses would be best.

No desire to tour any other middle east countries, fairly intimidating would be my opinion. I did admire
the muslims dedication & discipline with their faith, mosques r always close by. Most carry a wrist rosary of some type & pray most of the day as they work.

Fascinating to witness their life style & customs especially in Jordan. They still have the Bedouin culture of
sheparding their flocks of sheep & goats, fun to watch them tend their livestock & live off the land which is
mainly desert. When u meet the locals some would proudly proclaim they were Bedouin's & would pound their chest to show their pride in their heritage.

Everywhere u go in the Middle East, there is a persistent haze from the dust coming off the desert. I don't know how they deal with breathing that day after day. Christian's live among the muslims in Jordan without
persecution, I don't know if they have the same rights as citizens? In Israel muslims & christians r very much
2nd hand citizens, fair amount of discrimination in Israel. Politics of the region r very complicated, difficult to
comprehend.

My daughter spent a week in Morocco and also several days in Turkey (Istanbul). She is extremely religious (Christian) but loved her time in those countries and learning about their culture in particular. She said that she found the call to prayer very inspirational. Thinks it is a great thing to stop and pray a few times each day.

There was a bomb attack in Cairo today. Near the Great Pryamid at a spot frequented by tourists. Several killed.

Be vigilant if you take the trip

This is the person to listen to.

I am taking a three week trip next summer and the last 3 days are in Cairo ? I am pretty excited but also a little nervous. Has anyone ever been there or any Muslim country and if so what is the etiquette during the call to prayers throughout the day? Not really looking forward to the Islamic wake up call every morning
I spent 3 1/2 weeks in eygpt..
cairo, memphis, down the nile to abu symbol, sharm el shiek, alexsandria, even went to st. catherins. went during mubarek.
1. if someone is going to try to sell you something, act like your busy looking at your watch/phone. (if your not interested)
2. 1 US dollar is like 5 to 7 of theirs. I used a lot of room service getting my clothes cleaned
3. stella beer, but be somewhat cool in cairo with beer.
4. if your in cairo, for sure see the cairo museum (tuts gold) cairo also has a church where Jesus was supposed to have stayed (st. barbra). and a synagog where moses was supposed to have been (ben ezra). and the mosque where ali was buried was built out of all the limestone they stripped off the pyramids.
try to see giza, (I was able to go into the second biggest pyramid there, the sphinx & kings boat is cool), sakarrah has the step pyramid and a very cool old tomb with engraved walls and other points of interest.
cairo is busy traffic, they even have goats running round..lol.. notice how everyone has rebar out of the top of the building so they don't have to pay tax.
5. sisi is probably the same as mubarek, as far as running things, so you should be ok, they have police on every corner, it's a dictator type thing. which they kinda need to combat radical jihadists. travel with someone and not far after dark.
6. the history is amazing, be sure to always have bottled water. and be carefully on what you eat cause of their lack of refrigeration. I suppose the big hotels are fine.

I spent time in israel, turkey, greece, italy..they are all bout the same as eygpt. most the folks are just trying to earn a living and don't cause trouble.

this picture was from the mena house, drank a few beers there.
my camera time was wrong, for there
enjoy yourself. you should have a good time.

Is that the Egyptian Museum and are photos allowed inside?
we has to leave our cameras at the door, and go thru a metal detector, the cameras are safe though, and you can take pictures of the outside. besides tut's gold, I seen the israel steeler, but didn't have time to go to the mummy room. that is one of the top 4 museums in the world. and is pretty mind blowing.

you would do well to search around for a decent guide, to take you to all the places.
it just saves so much time and effort. tour guides save you from getting ripped off, and hasseled. and cairo is the second biggest city in the world, you defiantly don't want to be trying to figure it out on your own.
this was my guide but he's doing dubai tours now. but maybe if you contact him he would know a good guide.
https://tourguides.viator.com/tour-guide-afifi-el-shimy-62565.aspx

they have a eygpt link at the bottom of the page and you can see pictures and contact info for eygpt guides, then you can just walk out you hotel to a van, and have them show you all the sites. they can arrange to pick you up at the airport and take you to the hotel, also.
I would just get one with the most good reviews for cairo and places around it.

This is a good point. The guards are all around the tourist areas and they carry submachine guns. This is normal and does not mean that there is a heightened state of emergency. Do not worry about it.

Great information here thanks while this thread is active has anyone by chance ever been to Stockholm? The beginning of my trip starts there and I will be there for just 24 hours...looking at day tours or hop on hop off options but if there are better options I am all ears

When I visit America, I try not to go to the inner cities, if you know what I mean. I visit the national parks, Disneyland, Las Vegas, etc.

Why would it be locked? And why do you need to post that? What point are you trying to make other than bringing attention to your self.

Its a travel thread, snowflake. Dont be so easily offended

As CFO large construction company, when we were building the Jeddah Airport
Lots of stories some directly and some indirect
Two trips of week each to review my 15man accounting office
Flew over on the Concorde once, they were big spenders
Held up on entry at Airport, they thought mouth wash was liquor
Put one of European clerks and Service Manager in jail
because their Supervisor stole payroll funds and flew home to England
someone, against rules reported it to Saudis
we sent food down daily about a month
We stayed on compound, not often went off to city
Other crazy things before job completed

I don't have much to add but if they drive over their like our chicago Lady uber driver from that area good luck. She would just make random you turns in bumper to bumper traffic, stop wherever she wanted it was a little nerve racking.

yes, an American doesn't want to be driving over there, the funny thing is when a ambulance drives by 20 cars will get on it's rear end and use it as a blocking fullback to get thru traffic. lol, it basically bumper cars for 90 million people living along a river.
another thing is out side of the hotel, always have a dollar if you want to use the rest room. they will always ask you for a dollar to use it. the small towns are really religious, but it's more laid back in like aswan because it's more coptic. luxor has a lot of people of all sorts so you will see some women dressed almost in a g-string and another covered with a burka.
I was taking a picture of a ramsees statue and this blonde gal from russia who made marlin monroe look like a 5 posed in front of it. and I almost took a picture of her, till I seen her 7ft greek boyfriend.

A truck parked with it's steel tubing still in the road caused the death of one of our employees in Saudi
Camels and donkeys cause of much traffic problems/delays
of course women divers had no accidents

No prostitutes or alcohol!!! Funny this Christian country can't say the same?

I think saudi is a lot harsher then eygpt on alcohol. maybe cause the ancient eygptians used to make a lot of beer? so the copts can handle their alcohol a lot better then arabs.

Brits controlled Egypt directly after WWI and brought in alcohol, but alcohol is not allowed at all in Islam. Ancient Egyptians were not Arabs. They were the same race as Ethiopians and Kenyans.

yeah....amazing how many people don't know Egyptians are Africans...wonder if they mark African American on Loan Apps? Same people think Iranians are Arabs, I suppose.

The term Copt designates the native population of Egypt, as opposed to the various invaders or settlers (Greeks, Romans, etc.) who came to Egypt from other countries.

Underrated post.

Word on the job site was the Airline Stewardesses made enough to retire by attending the various parties the Sheiks had, plenty of booze and cigs there
Just to clarify as I have spent a lot of time both in Egypt and Saudi. They are very, very, very different. My favorite family vacation of my life was Eqypt (focused on Southern Egypt with a couple days in Cairo). I have been to Saudi many times on business and do not see it as a tourist destination for non-Muslims at all. They don't equate to each other in terms of the original topic.
