Lance really hasn’t shown that he can run Shanahan’s offense. I’m kind of surprised they dumped him given Purdy’s injury history and the fact that at least he knows the playbook. They save some money and IMO that’s probably the main reason he got traded. IF he had been a 3rd round pick like he should have been he would still possibly be a 49er.
All that they gave up to get him. He was far from proven coming out of college.
I always thought that Shanahan was talked into drafting Lance. He reportedly wanted Mac Jones after trading up in the draft and then changed his mind. Jones was a better fit for Shanahan's offense. But at this point, Brock Purdy has looked better than Jones. In fact, there were rumors that Mac Jones was already wearing out his welcome in New England.
Mac has a better arm than Purdy but to quote that QB whisperer Mario, “Purdy is a fast blinker”. 😉
I think they picked him up because they know they are in trouble at that position and it was the only available move.
And then Grier goes out and has a very good preseason performance. Better than anything Lance has put on video ……. Regardless of how cheap he was, I think Jurrie screwed the pooch….again.
The problem as I see it is that Grier clearly has a lot of locker room support and knows the offense after a good performance. Do you try to sneak Grier through waivers to the practice squad or do you just cut bait and keep Lance as QB 3 in the 53. Grier’s no doubt gone and they’re gonna pay Lance a lot more as a third string backup than Grier cost them. Doesn’t make much sense to me. I just don’t think the Boys should have been that desperate. My Vikings on the other hand…..
They get the chance to develop him for a year or two at a bargain price. Few teams ever need their 3rd QB. Good move by the cowboys
Lance is zero threat to Dak. He really needs a lot more game reps in college.
Draft picks aren’t nothing and then they pick up his full contract next year. Obviously they see more upside with Lance than Grier.
I was shocked when people started talking about Lance as a 1st round pick. Can't believe people got caught up in the NDSU hype. Best oline in FCS. Throwing to Watson who has blazing speed. He needed another year to prove it.
Good god, yes. It's odd that the Cowboys gave up a 4th round pick for Lance when they already have a proven backup QB. And Lance's contract is only for two more seasons. Dallas will not be picking up his fifth year option. So basically, Jerry Jones has the most expensive third stringer in the league in 2023 with a good chance of having him be the backup QB in 2024. Only to let him walk as a free agent after that. Strange.
I'll mention COVID as a reason for all of this (at the risk of calling the Covidiots out of the tall weeds).
Uh, no. He tore it up for a full season. 28 tds and no picks with over 1,000 yds rushing. He wasn't drafted based on 1 game.
His contract is for less this year than Grier’s was.
